I did that saving/putting off thing with Persuasion which was the last one I read and then it was SO worth the wait. That one's ALSO my favourite. (As is Emma. As are all of them.)

The Passion of Artemisia is fabulous! As are all Susan Vreeland's books on other artists. I am a big fan of reality in fiction. And I adore Sevenwaters - I think I need to start from the beginning again!

Soooo, Artemisia Gentileschi is my favorite artist and The Passion of Artemisia was quite an enjoyable read! I'm so glad you're bringing attention to her and I hope you enjoy the book! ☺️

I heard about Artemisia Gentileschi for the first time in The Furies by Katie Lowe and I've become so interested in her since I read this novel. I've been struggling to find more books about her because as you've said most books are quite expensive.
I really loved Tilly and The Bookwanderers

Hi Jean! You probably already know this but the National Gallery of London is hosting a major exhibit on Artemisia Gentileschi starting in April of 2020! I'm so excited - I'm hoping to come to London to see it. I've not heard of that book before though but I'm definitely putting it on my list now. Most of what I know about her comes from podcasts actually.
Also I really, really don't like The Kiss Quotient. It starts off well but I don't think it follows through adequately. As someone who reads a fair amount of romance, I was very disappointed after all of the praise. BUT I still read The bride Test this year and I like it so much more! It's more focused on the female lead's journey than on the romance and I think that lends some real heft to the novel. I was shocked by how real and moving it was. It's based on Helen Hoang's mother's experiences as a transplant to the Us and you can really tell. It feels lived in.
Also, also I missed that you're reading the Girl Meets Duke series but that makes me so happy! Those books are so fun and the The Governess Game is literally one of my favourite books of the year. I can't wait to get to the final story.

I just started the video, but I have to pop in with a comment, another book you might be interested is Blood Water Paint by Joy McCullough, I recently picked this book up, since I'm a fan of Artemisia and her work. I think it's more on YA side and it's partly written in verse. I'm hoping to get to it in January. Now I need to hunt down The Passion of Artemisia!

As I do my researches on Virginia Woolf, I wanted to advice to start with another book than Orlando, it's very particular and super different from the rest of her work, in my opinion To the Lighthouse, Mrs Dalloway or Jacob's room are more accessible and say more about her work.

The only one I've read out of these is Orlando, and I unfortunately I really didn't like it. It felt very tedious and meandering to me, and it was just a chore to get through for me. I didn't enjoy the writing at all, the plot felt like it didn't really go anywhere, I didn't understand half of what the book was trying to accomplish, and in the end, I just didn't really get anything out of it.
I did read like 2-3 chapters of Girls of Paper and Fire earlier this year before putting it aside. I do plan on picking it up eventually though and hopefully see it through.
I have been curious about The Deathless Girls ever since I heard about it, so I'm looking forward to hearing your thoughts on it. I also really want to finally get into the Diviners series in 2020 :)

I've been meaning to read Pages & Co. as well, now that my library finally has it. If you are willing to wait until after January (because I am doing Read Yo' Shelves in January, which focuses on reading the books on your own shelves), would you like to buddy read it?
I also believe I have an ARC from work of Girls of Storm and Shadow, so we could buddy read that in January if you want.

Out of the books that you mentioned, the only book that I read was Orlando by Virginia Woolf and I did not like it. I felt that Orlando had the ability to accomplishment so much, but I felt that it presented so many ideas and built so many paths, but each and every one of them ended up on a dead end. I did not feel that anything was resolved or accomplished. I could not help but notice one of the comments referring to The Kiss Quotient and how it pertains to one of the characters having Asperger's Syndrome. I myself have Asperger's Syndrome (as do some of my fellow Gladiators) and I find the representation within it in literature (along with Autism and other conditions of the Autistic Spectrum) to be lacking. Everything I have noticed pertains to be centered on a relationship, the Autistic character comes off as being possessed, or is called The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time and I thought that book was terrible. The label of Asperger's has been removed and Autism is now measured in degrees (higher functioning vs. lower functioning), but there is also that contrast between what is viewed as "higher functioning Autism" vs. what is viewed as "Asperger's" and that is where the confusion takes place. Dr. Hans Asperger was a pediatric psychiatrist in Nazi occupied Austria and while he was not directly involved with the extermination of disabled children, he did cooperate and send children that would not be useful to a more prison-like facility. The haunting way to contrast how people with that label pertains to who Dr. Asperger would take action into lifting up as being productive members that can blend into society for that time. It is really sad and it really brings light to who Dr. Asperger really was. I read Asperger's Children last year and, if anything, the argument is that we just need to treat people better and stop judging people by and using labels so often. Thank you for sharing! -Josh

Have you heard of the play It's 'True It's True It's True'? It's a ragey feminist, very emotional play about Artimisia Gentileschi's rape trial. I haven't seen it myself but my friend saw it at the fringe and loved it so much she went again when it came to Bristol. I recommend that if you hear of it being performed again!

I picked up Pages and Co. for my 12 year old cousin for Christmas! It came highly recommended from the bookseller when I did :p I'll need to ask him once he reads it :p
I want to read something by Owen Jones this year as you continue to praise him highly. :) It's a goal of mine to read some more political based non-fiction in 2020 mainly due to the current political climate in the UK...
Also, as you mention ed Angela T Davies, have you watched the netflix documentary called "The 13th"? It's about mass incarceration of black people in the US and the issues with the prison system. I'd highly recommend it :)
Inside This Place, Not of It sounds very interesting! Added to my tbr for sure! Women are often brushed aside when we discuss prison as their issues differ widely from that of their male counterparts.

@@JeansThoughts I think the Scottish have great accents ;) But yeah, the Irish do too. (and true: for some reason I always think of the Republic of Ireland specifically when someone says "Irish", and think of NI as being quite separate, which perhaps makes sense since it's part of the UK, but I don't really know too much about the distinctions between culture and politics over there; I'm Dutch and love using that as an excuse xD)
