  • The breakout of three inmates from Alcatraz in 1962 has been the subject of wild speculation for more than half a century. Now a handwritten letter is again raising questions about whether the men survived the frigid waters and deadly currents of San Francisco Bay. John Blackstone reports.

    My Grandmother, uncle and aunt lived on Hyde street, just up from the Buena Vista during this time and until ‘67. You could see Alcatraz out my uncle and Grandma’s windows. As a kid, (I was born in ‘59) we were there a lot, but was never aware of this story until the movie came out in the 70s. SF has some great history.

    The evidence as iv gathered over the years are that the fbi never stopped looking for them. They showed up at the funeral where two very tall manly woman were in attendance. The women talked to no one and left. The night of the esacape nearly an hour after the suspected time they escaped a car was stolen on the mainland by 3 men. This car just so happened to be near the shore closest to the island. The mother recieved roses for years with a letter signed by names she had never heard of and the letters supposedly had a signature mark on them to represent the men who escaped. The handwritten letter even though considered to be fake by the police was kept a secret and the physical document was kept in storage. They escaped. They lived. And john tried to exchange healthcare for the chance to reveal this but what he didnt consider was that the police were embarrassed by the escape and therefore never revealed himself. I think he watched his brother die and knew he was dying and he became desperate.

An with help from the Mob he got a New SS number that he later found out belonged to a dead baby.., He changed his hair color, grew a thick beard and wore glasses. That's all it took to live without anyone ever questioning him...Dont believe me I dont care.I look just like that mugshot of him. Need more proof..He told me they made it to Angel island where a car was left for them, That escape was very well planed for months and months, it was an inside and outside job.....R.I.P Dad

    There had to have been other boats on the island itself for guards and other work personnel, to travel to, and from the island, because they can’t leave those workers deserted without transport. With that being said, I think they staged their failed escape to throw guards off. This was likely a last minute change of plan.

    They didn't make it. There have been several attempts with world class athletes to escape from Alcatraz with the same equipment the three had. None of them even can close, the currents were waaaaay too strong and eventually the paddles broke and the rafts fell apart. So if well trained athletes couldn't make it, you really think those three (without wet suits) could pull it off? no way.

Also, the Anglin Brothers would swim in Lake Michigan, which is freezing, as younger men.. In one of these films, it is mentioned that if they had drowned, at least 2 of 3 bodies would have been found.. There is much more evidence that they DID survive than not

      I’m calling BS on the “well trained” athletes. Iron man types and triathletes do things ten times harder than that. If they tried it once and failed then I wouldn’t call it case closed based on one data point. Months of planning and knowing the currents and tides would help. The thought of being hung in the morning is a powerful motivator.

    Not one of them ever got in trouble w the law again is hard for me to swallow, with nobody to help and no $$$ car or house it just seems tough that they led a straight life after and never got in trouble. That’s ware I start to believe they drowned

    It's an illegal but I don't know why everyone seems to in favor with them (escapee) including me.

    Why didn't he leave some fingerprints in ink on the note if real? Would have sealed the deal.

    • @fk8118
      @fk8118 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jay Toor absolutely, nothing authenticates like finger-palm prints. And, why not?

    • @boothe2803
      @boothe2803 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jay Toor they didn’t have their fingerprints on file maybe? So it wouldn’t have done anything?

    • @fk8118
      @fk8118 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jay Toor my thinking, exactly. No reason to hide his identity at this phase. Plus, we can imagine how many bogus claims the FBI received. A document hand written with palm and finger prints would seal the deal.

      he chit, FYI....there is events where people swim in freezing cold icy waters for up to 21 miles without wetsuits, just bathing suits. And the Anglin brothers were expert swimmers. Plus two tv shows have proved the cold water swim, as well as using a raft( like the escapees) could be done.
