This is so incredible yet so crushing in the same fell swoop. This is my hometown. My childhood mall. Got my left ear pierced as a pre-teen cool wannabe at Claire’s Boutique. Bought my first baseball cards at Beachcomber. Spent countless hours in the Space Port arcade. Bought tropical gifts for family members at Calypso. Worked at the Boscov’s when I was 16. I could see myself walking through the mall as you made your way across the tile. Utterly haunting and incredible at the same time. This mall was everything to me as a kid, and my web design agency office as an adult is around the corner. Good old EHT, the hidden abandoned gem of Atlantic County.
I dropped a lot of quarter under the arcade games at Space Port. There is a picture floating around on the internet of the entrance to Space Port. Memory unlocked
That was insane and very sad at the same time, our childhood is vanishing with these malls disappearing. I remember Circuit City and like it better then Best Buy. Thank you for taking us along Ray, take care.
Growing up in the late 80’s to the late 2000’s in this area, this mall, as well as the Hamilton mall, which in itself is slowly dying, were the go-to places on the weekend. The Shore mall had arcades (Space Port) Beach Comber was one of the longest standing stores, which moved to an abandoned Wawa by the old Cardiff circle. There was a time there was a mini golf/arcade combo in there. I haven’t been in Boscovs in years, and to know they saved a small piece of the mall kinda brings a tear to my eye. There was a KB Toys in it, and when Circuit City had their grand opening, former NASCAR driver Hut Stricklin came out to do a meet n greet. The Golden Corral isn’t that old, and was usually busy, but afaik, it shut down without a notice.
@@chromxrobinandcorrinxcamil9031 I remember it too! It's crazy to think this mall actually had an arcade up until it's closing, which even the few still thriving ones don't tend to have these days as well.
I grew up in this part of NJ and lived there from 1972-1989. I spent many days roaming the vast expanse of the Shore Mall when I was a kid. The area where you see all the floor tile outside on the ground used to be a large department store known as Steinbach's. Right next to it were small stores such as Spencer Gifts, Spaceport arcade, and Olympia Sports. The Shore Mall used to be a big deal until the Hamilton Mall in Mays Landing was built in the 1980's. It pulled the anchor stores away like Sears (now occupied by Boscov's). After that, the Shore Mall just couldn't compete.
And I was surprised the Shore Mall even managed to last as long as it did, with all of the competition it soon faced. That while the mall itself was getting dated, and dirty, even over a decade BEFORE it sadly bit the dust too! I still wish it could have hung on, but that's life sadly though.
I worked there in the 90's , the far anchor you were asking about was a value city and steinbachs before that. Before Burlington it was clover then JC penny , When it was JC penny , boscovs was Sears. The first section on your right was the food court, the two circles were planters and the circle up closer to boscovs was a huge fountain
I've worked at that "mall" 19 year now. the outback and Burlington moved closer to the other mall(the Hamilton mall). as for the anchor store foot print it was last a value city (or the dmv which is still there just behind the boscov) it hard to tell from the angle. please be careful in that closed off area the found a rather grizly crime scene in the woods back there. and there still a few mentally ill people that live around the area)
Boscov's was originally Sears. Burlington was WB Grant's. The main store in the rear was Steinbach. Behind the movie theater was a drive in theater. The movie theater started with 2/4 movies then went to 16. Outback moved down the road. They were planters where you could sit when tired.
This is my hometown. That movie theater is now completely demolished, the Outback Steakhouse actually moved down the road to a nice new modern looking building and the Golden Corral is turning into an upscale sushi buffet. Oh, how things change. There was actually a time capsule buried under the demolished part of the mall, they dug it up and put it in a museum. And that old anchor store was Value City.
This was an all around awesome explore. The Boscov's, the mall floor still being intact, and the portion of mall corridor still in place with the lights on. One of my childhood malls Belle Promenade in Marrero Louisiana was demolished about 20 years ago. The tiles in the food court, center court, and movie theater are still in place while the rest of the site has been redeveloped. A portion of the old parking lot is still in place as well. The vintage neon Boscov's stores are always a treat to see. Thanks for sharing this place with us.
Did the ECKERD store at Belle Promenade Mall (which I only know about from old photos and articles online) stay open until the mall closed? If so, would it have been replaced by a new Eckerd store nearby when the mall closed? Perhaps a store which still is a CVS store today?
Yeah it had the superior space port over the hamilton mall. Actually had the "space" theme vs the brown room in the hamilton. Even when spaceport left and some other smaller place went in there, it had some really good arcade games still.
@@jamesmaxwell4447 It was hard to believe this mall still even had an arcade inside of it up until it's closing in 2013. At least the Hamilton Mall now has one again, which is a nice place, with much to offer too. To add into how forgotten this mall was, even before the demolition, in 2007 when the PS3 came out, every known store in the area was sold out day 1, since people would camp out. I went with my dad to the shore mall to come and find that no one had camped it out and they had several PS3s available. The PS3 was all the rage back in the day.
Space Port. Back in the day when it was safe to do so, my mother would drop me off at Space Port with $5, then go shopping at Steinbach's. By the time she picked me up, most of the $5 was gone (unless I played Spy Hunter - then only $0.25 would be gone). Then we'd head over to Capri Pizza, have a slice or two, visit the puppy prison (Pet Shack), venture outside because WAAY back, there was a JCPenny before Boscov's came to town. Not sure if they’re all this way, but Outback’s would open late afternoon for dinner only, the food was always too greasy and too salty and overpriced.

The store in the back was a value city in the 00s before it was torn down
That's it!
The outback closed because the rent became to high and with the way the area was no longer thriving they moved to a newer location. Golden corral closed because of covid and hasn't reopened.
That Spirit is supposedly the flagship location.
That makes sense!
Almost positive that entrance in the back you were talking about was to Value City.....
Golden coral was bussin, closed like year ago tho
Yeah it's being changed up. It's going to be a sushi / seafood buffet.
I use to always go to that movie theater it’s kinda sad that they will demo it soon
I wish I could have gotten a better look
@@RayOutThere yea I heard that they will be tearing it down very soon but idk when
I got my ears pierced at 16 at the Piercing Pagoda, it was right across from Space Port…
God just to work there can't believe is old and it's closed
I wonder if that’s where Spirit Halloween does their photoshoots? They’re done in this town!
Yes, it is the Flagship store and this is the first one to open each year with a HUGE grand opening.
Hi Ray , thanks for all of your exploring great job.
My Daughter Brittany went to this mall before she moved to Malta.
Thanks for watching!
I'm gonna rebuild it, It will take me a few years, but i'll do it for just a moment.
I'll help
No way you will rebuild it
Very sad what's happened to both malls Hamilton and the shore mall now the movie theater is gone demolished as well
Yeah, Hamilton is so nice, it makes me really sad
What ever happened to the time capsule they had under the blue tiles where Value City stood (at the other end of this mall) Anybody know?
I was thinking the same thing..
It is with the Egg Harbor Historical Society
Thank you!!
0:42 the largest in the state when it opened.
Not sure if they’re all this way, but Outback’s would open late afternoon for dinner only, the food was always too greasy and too salty and overpriced.
I remember kb toy store footlocker Debs
The Frank Cinema nearby was demolished in 2022 according to Street View.
Yeah, its a flat pad now. Outback is still there.
Spaceport
the internet killed the malls, just like Video Killed the Radio Star
Lol that's true
Sadly the Internet has done that to a LOT of the real world 😔
:( I love this little mall :(
That Golden Corral turned into a Japanese buffet
The big draw was Value City… wow does anyone else remember value city??
I think that was the anchor in the space I was looking at
Bought several of my best casual clothes from there.
Yep! It was there when it replaced Steinbach's in the mid 90's, until it closed down in late 2008 as well.
Going Down to Creepsville
That theatre got demolished
It's very upsetting that the last cool store in this place was trying to run a front while the workers wanted to run a legit business
That's really interesting, is there a place to learn more about that?
@@RayOutThere it was the VR lab that was in it. Apparently the owners were saying it was a school when it was very far from it.
A front for drugs?!?
@Jennifer Burchill im not sure, i think i heard the news the owners were laundering money by saying the vr lab was a school. While the people who ran the shop had no idea the building was considered a school not a VR lab.
@purpledabs wait what??? What VR Lab?
GONNA TAKE YOU DOWN TO A TOWN I KNOW
Outback is overpriced and the saltiest food on the planet… not that people go to Outback worried about healthy food.
I liked it, but I'm also pretty basic
🤣 😂
