  • In todays tutorial I speak about one part of the bow technique, how I use the right thumb for better bow changes hope its useful ! Probably this will work for either cellists or violinist/violists, just a little detail to keep in mind while practicing!

    It seems like you bend the thumb when you want to emphasize a particular point in the phrase, to generate slightly more bow pressure when closer to the frog. The straight thumb has a great effect of continuing the prior phrase by avoiding too much pressure near the frog on the subsequent down-bow. Great lesson, thank you for sharing.

Grande Pablo (Y)

    Thanks for the video! I love the feeling of playing with the thumb placed on the frog and have experimented a lot with it including few live shows. Love it for how it feels and sound when playing melodies, it’s like spreading butter and feeling the total resonance of the cello inside your hand. It has an almost sensual feeling and I love how it’s not just a copy paste from the violin technique, but I have a few issues with that hold that maybe someday you will cover in future videos:
    Firstly keeping the hair flat at all times or at least being able to do so if necessary/wanted. Before I’d just roll the thumb inwards and bend my fingers and the stick would rotate. Can’t make this work with this Russian hold. I notice you elevate your wrist in order to get it flat, but I may be wrong. To me being able to maintain full hair even in lower dynamics is important and I was wondering what your take it on that.
    Secondly, when playing more aerial bowing techniques like in a Bach suite mouvement or the like, the hand particularly the thumb feels tighter and gets tired faster, and I struggle to craft as much of a variety in tones.
    Lastly, I really struggle to feel comfortable and powerful at the tip. At the frog it’s paradise and at the tip it’s hell. I notice you pronate and raise you elbow while strengthening your fingers. Again maybe I’m wrong.
    It’s really fun to geek around with these thing and it’s nice to see someone at your level still experimenting and fine tuning small things. I’m too a very analytic person about playing and bowing has become an obsession over the years. Because when the bow feels good, everything else feels good!
    Thanks again for sharing and looking forward to the next one:)
    Cheers

    Buenas tardes
Casualmente te encontré en You Tube y me encantas. Me hizo gran ilusión ver que ibas a actuar en mi ciudad y no dudé en ir a verte en directo. Continuaré viendo tus clases tutoriales que son magníficas. Enhorabuena de todo corazón.

    Although not practical for general playing, try bowing with just 2 fingers - your index finger on top and your thumb below the bow. This can give you a perfect transition even on an open string. The point is to be able to make the transition imperceptible to the ear - you have to watch to see when the direction changes. My teacher had this skill perfected.

    I would like to ask Pablo if he would agree that a new design for the Frog of the bow is needed. It should be possible to get engineers to study the use of the Frog and work with bow makers to do something different from what we have. I hope this does not shock you too much. Ideas from any cellist welcome.

    The primary thing I noticed is that you begin your downbow motion before you "finish" your upbow motion, which I found to be really helpful in my playing too, but I'm wondering about how to do the opposite (begin upbow before you finish downbow) because you have a lot less control at the tip.
    Also, I noticed you're using the bowhold with your thumb in the traditional position as opposed to how you normally hold it. Was this just for demonstration purposes or are you trying it out?

    • @pabloferrandez
      @pabloferrandez  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I hold it same way as before! Might be a camera effect!

    Pablo, I'm new to the cello, but you are my favorite player. Your tone and technique are just astonishing. But also... I was wondering if in your next video you'd say, "Hello, my name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die." Grins!
