Grays Level Crossing

  • Three single and one pair of Class 357s in c2c livery pass the pedestrianised crossing at Grays, each closure seeing a train head to Purfleet and to Tilbury Town respectively. This CCTV crossing has had many proposals to close it and replace it with a new footbridge with lifts, as so many people use it (as can be seen when the barriers are down and pointed out by the woman at the very end referring to cattle) and it has had lots incidents (probably some of which will be in the video list to the right). Thus, there are 'Please use bridge when barriers are down' signs and 'Do not cross when red lights show' signs on each of the four pedestrian lights. The lights are more or less useless as they are facing awkward angles and are covered in mesh so they are hardly visible in the day (probably to stop a drunkard from smashing the bulb). The barriers, despite their size, noisily squeal as they come down. The occasional beeping from the first shot is from the nearby Pelican Crossing, as pedestrians cross the road parallel to the railway every 15 seconds. My aunt decides to call my father exactly as the crossing has closed. Nice (sarcasm).
Route: London, Tilbury & Southend Railway

    Train 1: 3:08
    Train 2: 3:49
    Closure 2: 4:16
    Train 3: 6:56
    Train 4: 8:32

It's not the same now without the old 302 trains going threw those gates

A lot of things have changed along this line and the A13 corridor. Would have been nice to explore it back in the day.

I've heared that too, it's a shame that they might have to do that all because people don't like to wait.

Why are there such long wait times for this crossing in the first place? If they shorten the distnce between the detectors and the crossing, the wait times would go down considerably, and the number of pissed-off people would decrease almost exponentially.

That would work but I think under network rail safety regulations they crossing must be closed two minutes prior to the train arriving to ensure they can stop the train should the crossing be blocked.

Replacing the footbridge with a new one with a lift would solve everything, but you know... money

Nathan A RF I don't think they are actually going to close the Crossing. If this is closed, buggy's and wheelchairs have to make a 10 minute detour. I think they are just discussing about closing this crossing. I don't think they will

TrainBuddy 123 I saw an article somewhere about it closing in April and a new footbridge with lifts to replace it

I understand why people who are elderly, disabled, have a pram etc have to wait, but why do people many people who can walk across the railway bridge wait for the crossing? Lazy sods lol. There's a railway bridge for when the barriers are down, use it.
