Hope he checks the voltage! 220V is standard in Pakistan. If that new sewing machine is 110V, he will burn it up without using a transformer.

That's an awesome idea, for some reason it made me think of the portable, non-electric clothes washing machine. I just found one for $5 at a garage sale and we are putting it at our cabin where there is no electricity.

That's a lovely gift but with all the electrical appliances he's been sent now such as this and the huge fridge-freezer etc I worry if he'll be able to afford the cost of electricity? I imagine power cuts are common (god knows they are in my village and I live in the UK) and the machine is useless without power. I can't help thinking a manual machine would have been much more practical and cost them nothing to use. I don't mean to be a party pooper but I think it's something to bear in mind.
What about the electricity. Can they use it. Do they need transformer to work.
He already has a refrigerator and a washing machine and lights in his house , he has electricity , although in parts of Pakistan they have rolling blackouts / brownouts due to supply issues .

As a person that has worked on many sewing machines, it's a computerized machine. Since they commonly have electricity issues over there, I hope there are no surges or outages that will cause the machine to have problems.
And, since it's computerized, it is much more difficult to work on it than it is on a manual machine.
They will have to take it into a shop every 1-2 years as the only way to oil it is internally which means taking off parts (possibly computerized parts) to refresh the oil or replace a part.
It would be expensive to maintain - and probably why so many sewists over there use manual machines, which can be oiled from the outside and have less expensive parts.
That being said, it was a very generous gift and very thoughtful of the giver!
The PKR at 100,000 is actually equal to only $436.77 American. Also this model can be around $250-$300 depending on what store you go to. However that doesn't include shipping across the world, which would make this gift more expensive than the stores price.

You should explain to Chaudhary that this is about £380 UK, which is a low-income weeks wage here. It is sad that the western world throw.things like this away for no valid reason, the same with TVs - we see containers full of huge TVs at recycling sites in the UK, the only reason they are thrown away is because a bigger version has hit the shops.

Shouldn't be a problem at all. Pakistanis are adept at solving almost any kind of problem. Unlike the Western shops, in Pakistan, you have areas where you have a whole multitude of shops that are all competing with each other for the same stuff. For example, you'll have streets where all the shops are vehicle parts, other streets for cookware, streets for books, streets for electronic stuff etc, etc.. the list is endless. :) @@rochelle1117

What an awesome gift! Pakistan runs on 220V, the US on 120V, someone needs to get him an adapter so it can be plugged in. Or maybe there was one included?

Yeah, the reaction of disappointment, as that machine wont work there. Pakistan has different electric currency and frequency, that machine is just a brick and wont work, in worst case just fries up the first time they trie to put it on. Its 100% useless there.

@@wsmcke that singer is a great sewing machine I hope she learns to use it proficiently. That model is fairly simple. The hardest part to teach would probably just be selecting the stitch patterns...
