  • The park can trace its origins back to 1219 when a monastery was founded on the lands by the Order of St. Victor and dedicated to St. Catherine. 300 years later, the monasteries were suppressed and the land became Crown Property. In 1795 the priory building was purchased by a Robert Butler who renovated and altered it, renaming the house St.Catherine’s Park.
The house passed to the Huguenot La Touche banking family, but was destroyed by fire shortly afterwards. A new building replaced it. Completed in 1798, it still stands today as the Leixlip Manor Hotel
The landscape today is relatively unchanged having narrowly escaped being rezoned for housing in the 1990s.
There are a number of interesting historical sites within the park. The most obvious and striking is the 12th St. Catherine’s Church ruin
The structure, up to recently, was obscured by ivy - so much so that a 2011 survey stated ‘The structure is very vulnerable and decaying rapidly. It is a good example of the damage that can be inflicted on buildings by uncontrolled vegetation’. It has now been restored and the overgrowth cleared to reveal the stonework and the window mullions that would once have supported a stained glass window.
To the left of the church, the castellated entrance gate to the lower yard of the estate is revealed.
The gate was designed by Francis Johnson who also designed the GPO in Dublin. The relatively intact survival of the big house, outbuildings and yard is rare.
Another ancient survivor is encountered as you follow the wall of the yard and up the adjoining laneknown as the Black Avenue. 50 metres along on the right will be seen St. Catherine’s Holy Well which dates back to the 1500s.
The well comprises two arches; the larger one on the left was for drinking, while the smaller one on the right reputedly cured afflictions of the eye. At the top of the larger one is a stone head representing St.Catherine. This has suffered the indignity of having been stolen more than once. Also absent in recent times is the wooden door that once adorned the well.
The upper yard is used by fingal county council workers and could be renovated with the right investment.there are many out buildings ,a house and what looks like a castle.
