In the wake of damning new evidence, the contribution of meat consumption to carbon emissions is at the forefront of global conversations. In this debate, fears of environmental damage and ethical concerns for animal rights clash with millions within the meat industry facing unemployment, religious and cultural traditions being condemned, and those with medical requirements risking disapproval for putting their health first. In light of these competing concerns, we must confront one of the most urgent issues of our time: should society finally move beyond meat?
    --------------------------------------
    Proposition Speakers
    1. Heather Mills
Former model, businesswoman, media personality, and activist. She launched VBites, a vegan food company, and plans to create a ‘vegan Silicon Valley’ in the North of England.
    2. Professor Jeff McMahan
White’s Professor of Moral Philosophy at the University of Oxford and author of The Meat Eaters. He has been a vegetarian for more than 50 years and continues to query the ethics of killing animals.
    3. Carol Adams
Writer, vegan feminist, and animal rights advocate. She is known for having written The Sexual Politics of Meat: A Feminist-Vegetarian Critical Theory, and was inducted into the Animal Rights Hall of Fame in 2011.
    --------------------------------------
    Opposition Speakers
    1. Mikhaila Peterson
Canadian podcaster who runs the blog Don’t Eat That. She eats a meat-only ‘Lion Diet’ and claims this has helped her overcome autoimmune and mood disorders.
    2. Peter Stevenson OBE
Chief Policy Advisor to Compasssion in World Farming and recipient of the RSPCA Lord Erskine Award. He was lead author of the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation review of animal welfare legislation.
ABOUT THE OXFORD UNION SOCIETY: The Oxford Union is the world's most prestigious debating society, with an unparalleled reputation for bringing international guests and speakers to Oxford. @@christophern2818 Benefits of Insoluble Fiber
Because insoluble fiber cannot be dissolved in water, it doesn't break down in the digestive tract. Instead it binds to the other food components you've eaten, adding bulk to the mass and helping it move through your intestines. This creates the urge to go to the bathroom. According to registered dietitian Debra A. Boutin of Bastyr University, bowel movements exercise the bowel, which is a muscle. Without enough insoluble fiber in the diet, the bowel becomes weak and there are fewer bowel movements, which leads to constipation.
Insoluble fiber also keeps the digestive system healthy by aiding the growth of beneficial gut bacteria that feed on sugars and fibers in foods. These healthy gut flora prevent bad bacteria from proliferating and causing illness.

Unfortunately maintaining that diet isn't viable for most people long term. Carnivore seems great for lots of people so far. Itll be interesting to get more info once a larger group of people do carnivore for long periods if time. Some people can seem to do vegan long term, but the majority end up having to quit. Now I've learned about regenerative farming, I now also understand animals are essential for us to save the planet. Her belief that an artificial meat burger, made from 20 imported ingredients and created in a lab with the high associated energy usage, could ever be better for the planet than a pasture raised cow grown with just rainwater and sunlight who's waste product grows the very grass it eats, is absurd. No way can we have billions upon billions of animals all on grass. There isn't enough land, the forests are already being destroyed to grow food for them.. Their methane gas and wastage run off is already destroying the environment. No animals are living on grass all the year round. Most of them come inside in the winter as there are no nutrients in grass.
Heather knows all there is to know on diet and animal cruelty and the last thing she is. is ignorant.

All the vegan restaurants here will end up costing you an arm and a leg if you truly want to eat your fill. @@madnezz1961 Oh I know, I actually used to be 100% vegan for a couple of years. But what I learned is that you need to eat a lot more veggies to compensate for the smaller amounts of meat/eggs/dairy one would eat. I had to eat 5 times a day to not pass out when doing physically demanding jobs. I have very little free time and a very small appetite, so I sometimes need to eat twice, even only once a day for long stretches of time (which works out fine when said meal is omnivorous). I know it can work for many but you can see how having to eat large servings of legumes multiple times a day is incompatible with my personal life. Not to mention, some people simply like the taste of a burger, an omelet or a pizza, don’t want to replace them with beans and lentils, and can’t afford to buy their vegan version. As long as there isn’t a vegan option that is as nutritious for the same quantities of their meat/dairy equivalent, and as affordable, I don’t think we’ll see a major shift in the public towards veganism.

The need to find out, through trial and error, what types of things your individual body responds positively to, not just with food but exercise as well. Has no one been paying attention to why all the diets are fads? That there's some underlying reason why universal prescriptions end up NOT being universally effective? That's good. However choice is what is needed. Some people benefit from a no meat diet others from a meat diet. For vegans there is very little choice. It's a bit biased. That's the problem.

So in your case meat diet works well, because of the other bad food you do not eat. I eat vegan and gluten free and feel fantastic. There are so many recipes that are vegan and gluten free. Oatmeal breakfasts, indian Currie s, Thai food, Mexican food. Now there are all types of noodles without weat. I really like, chickpeas, lentils, sweet potato, rice and all color groceries. Her comments at the end "we've been teaching the farmer to grow other things on arable land." Erm arable land is where you grow your crops anyway. In geography at school, we were told that the good earth and fields were kept for crops and anything not suitable for growing crops, like on hillsides, which is more likely to contain stones and rocks and have all the nutrients wash down the hillside in the rain, is used for feeding sheep and cattle. So her take on that is BS, farmers will still have arable land, but they'll empty fields where cattle and sheep once roamed and grazed. So the farmers will likely need a new subsidy to pay for those empty fields and lost revenue. That will come out of your pockets.

Is it me, or does it seem that every time humans attempt to make food “better” than Mother Nature does, they always fuck it up? Ex: white flour, trans fats, vegetable oils, high fructose corn syrup, etc… Do you really think that ultra-processed animal food alternatives that in some cases are way more processed then the animal product is actually going to be better for human health or the environment? Animal products were not a significant contributor to green house gases until very recently. It’s the modern agricultural and farming practices that are the problem, not the animal products themselves.

Vegans don't know what they want. Carol Adams says that eating meat is white supremacy and colonialism... Yet her white vegan colleague here went to the Inuits and told them to stop eating their native foods. Isn't that interesting. This stranger from the UK descends on another continent and magically knows the lay of the land and its hunting and animal populations and what a proper diet should look like for locals. This white woman must be a god to have such knowledge without having spent a lifetime living there!
