  • In this video, Gamblin explain the process known as ‘oiling out’, which is designed to unify an uneven surface quality on an oil painting and to saturate the colours.

Is it ok to use this technique if I used different medium while painting the piece. Like neo megilp by gamblin or oleogel by rublev? Thank you

QUESTION: How long will oiling out keep the colors looking fresh? Does it need to be re-applied anytime before the painting has cured enough for varnishing? 10/15/22

once should be enough but if you see some colors still sunked in go again, very very little oil. and wait 6 months if thin 1 year if it has impasto before varnish.

Can Galkyd Lite be used in place of the regular Galkyd? After watching your video, I was so excited to try this but somehow I ordered Galkyd Lite. I love the idea of this process. As you said, it's so much better than using a re-touch varnish. I can't seem to find any info on the differences in the two products so I really hope you can answer my question. Thanks!

Hi there, yes, Galkyd Lite can be used for oiling-out.
The only difference between Galkyd vs. Galkyd Lite is solvent content. Galkyd Lite has slightly more Gamsol in its formula.
The following are all appropriate oiling-out mixtures. Galkyd & Galkyd Lite mixtures are especially popular due to their fast-drying properties. Mixtures with Refined Linseed or Solvent-Free Fluid will take longer to dry, on average 1-2 weeks. Meanwhile, mixtures with Galkyd or Galkyd Lite take 2-3 days on average.
      Galkyd/Gamsol, 1:1
      Galkyd Lite/Gamsol, 3:2
      Refined Linseed/Gamsol, 1:3
      Solvent-Free Fluid/Gamsol 1:3

I oiled out with a 50/50 mix of Galkyd and Gamsol, a very thin coat. The painting itself was 6 months dry. It looks beautiful now, but 12 days after oiling out it's still slightly tacky to the touch, which can't be right. Ideas?
