20 Jun 2000 saw a moment the BBC puts itself to the news for an unprecedented event like no other on British Television: A power failure subdued the national broadcaster's Television Centre, which was finally put into a halt during the report on Euro 2000.
It started as a substation failure on the same day at 5pm BST (as admitted by London Electricity, currently EDF Energy), firing up the TVC generators which brought the channels off-air for a while. But as 6.20pm rolled in, the generators caught fire, putting a stop to broadcast operations in the facility -- where BBC News 24 (currently BBC [Integrated] News) is primarily broadcasting from, as well as some BBC Radio stations.
BBC One that was supposed to simulcast BBC News 24 was suddenly met with a "programme interruption screen" that played back Murray Munro's Against The Clock - Version 1. But being a regional-wide channel, BBC One Regional has opted in to some of their schedule channels as normal. As per Duncan Kennedy puts it, "regional output was largely unaffected".
From the substation failure to the time the BBC News 24 went back on air a day later, the power cut took a total time of 16 hours.
17 years later (20 Jun 2017), in such an 'unexpected' commemoration to the TVC Power Cut, Huw Edwards' BBC News at Ten has met their fate at the start of the programme due to an 'out-of-control' moment from the broadcast centre known as The Gallery. When the news crew noticed the silence ensuing the studio where Huw is designated, they resorted to a sudden panic in hopes to bring the programme back into action -- 4mins later.
This video shows the whole sequence of events from when the power cut happened to when the BBC News 24 went back on air. Subtitles have been re-encoded due to TH-cam's auto-captions breaking on the individual videos as cited here.

I miss those BBC news intro graphics and sound effects for what was back then under name of BBC news 24 rather than what now known as the news channel. But yeah for me those graphics and sound mix packed more of a punch than what it is now.

It was certainly a very bizarre power failure. You have the cut in 2001 where they were back to normal service in a relatively reasonable time, 20/21 minutes. You have what happened a year prior, and when you think your safe and sound with the backup generators, those catch on fire! I feel pity for those who came into work that day.

5:55 fun fact here: this timing of the countdown music starting is very similar to some time in August 2003 (not a power failure but it was during the refresh of News 24’s countdown)
