Hey Kenny, nice to see you behind the wheel! 😄 and what a great video on a build of shower walls! TY 👍🏼 look forward to Part II. See y’all Wednesday…. eeek I’m so exited!!
Pretty amazing how you put together a shower wall, Kenny!! 👏👏 Seems like you guys could do a pro class on fixing up an apartment on your property. People would love to learn this hands on. With multiple projects in an apartment, your students would have at least a week's worth of classes, especially if you did the floors as well!🤗
excellent timing! I am just starting my shower project and I'm pretty nervous. This helps - thanks. I am using your heavy metal striae recipe on the shower walls and the vanity countrtop. I have finished the countertop (using MDF) and it came out pretty doggone good, so I'm hoping the shower walls (using foam) are a good match.
Kenny, great job explaining calmly and throughly! I'm really excited to see the next video 😊! This going to really help me do my shower walls because my shower walls have been demolished for months now! I've been such a chicken shit !!
This so cool! I have never seen how these are done. Thank you for sharing, this is a great tutorial! As always, love your videos and how you explain the process. Nice to see you both on camera too!
Interesting, would hardie backer board be a decent choice for shower walls? Eliminate the fiber glass mesh. Looks simple, but there are multiple steps involved, along with some artistic eyes. It would seem to take all weekend. Wild but waterproof.
It would be difficult to seam the Hardie backer board, it also much heavier. The foam is extremely easy to work with. It’s light and easy to seam together and water proof. This is our preferred material. Smile 😊
Glad to see this, I'm in the middle of a bathroom remodeling and plan to do this exact thing for the shower. What determines how much you leave around the top? I've seen a lot of gap, small amounts and flush with ceiling.
@@RK3Designs okay thanks for replying. I've had issues with moisture on painted surfaces and mold in the past when some of wall is exposed so the nature of my question. Doing tile work, I have always taken it to the ceiling. Looking forward to part 2.
What's up guys?!?!?! Great video. I have an epoxy artistry business myself. I learned the trade watching Mike and your videos. I've completed 4 shower kits now, which have turned out beautifully. With that being said, a couple things that I do differently that I would love to hear your input on is 1. I only use half inch foam board instead of 1 inch, and 2. I also don't use any mesh. I haven't had any failure in any of the projects yet, but that doesnt mean I'm not doomed for future failure. Can you guys explain why my method might not work in relation to yours? Thanks a bunch 🌴🌴🌴
In our most recent video, we actually didn’t use the fiber mesh and Quick Coat layer due to time constraints and didn’t have any issues. However, we do recommend and will ourselves, use the mesh in the future for added structural integrity on the foam. It’s ok to use the 1/2 in foam unless you’re doing large panels with seams. I feel the 1/2 in. wouldn’t give you the support you need while transporting or installation. But that’s just our opinion. If it’s working for you, by all means, continue forward. 😊😊😊
Is there a possibility to spray (maybe a 3M spray) down on the foam to make sure the mesh is good and flat (adhere) to the foam before pouring on it? I want to make sure there is no air pockets.
We’ve actually tweaked our application method by pouring the quick coat first then laying the mesh down and squeegeeing it down. This will help with air pockets. Also, it’s not necessary for the mesh to be completely leveled since you’ll be able to sand once the quick coat is set up.
If you were to do this again, would you apply the mesh to the foamboard and THEN apply the Quick Coat over it? Or stick with putting Quick Coat on 1st and then lay mesh over it?
On new construction like that is it neccesary to sheetrock the shower walls first or can the foam board just be attached to the studs? Does there need to be a waterproof membrane of some sort between studs/sheetrock and foam? We are building a house ourselfs and plan to have a shower and tub/shower combo so can design walls however we want.
You need to prep the walls as if you’re applying tile. So yes, it needs to be waterproof. Also if you just attach the foam to the studs, it will be wavy.
Can the quick coat be replaced with regular stone coat epoxy? Does the thickener work the same? I have several gallons of the original formula and would rather not have to spend more money on quick coat.
We seam them together. We tape the backside of the seam then flip it over, apply the mesh and then the first coat of epoxy. The epoxy flowed between the two pieces and bonds. We’ve had excellent results using this technique 😊
Absolutely! You’ll want to add that strip of MDF so your edge is very smooth and has a round over. That way the edge looks finished and the epoxy will run smoothly over it.
I want to be sure I did not misunderstand this, but it is the insulated foam board that is used is the substrate for the epoxy finish? If so, does the applied epoxy end up making it so hard that it loses the sponginess of the foam and transpose it into something as hard as green board?
Yes. It is the insulation foam board you can purchase at Home Depot. I’m sure Lowes had as well. Once the fiberglass mesh is applied and the epoxy is cure, it is very hard and durable.
Is your thickener colloidal silica, microbeads or microfibres? What is the purpose of the thickener? What is the purpose of the fiberglass mesh, is it just to strengthen the panel? What about fiberglass cloth for the same purpose?
Yes the thickener is the silica. When the epoxy is thickened up, it’s easier to trowel over the mesh and also it won’t run over the edge as easily. The mesh gives more structural integrity to the foam.
Does the epoxy yellow after a few months? Can you clean soap scum off the epoxy without damage?Do people really do this, or is this just a fad? What's the resale value vs. real stone?
This is definitely not a fad. We done 100’s of countertops and showers. We offer a very durable and lasting product. Yellowing in a few months is due to using a low quality resin or additives. All epoxy will amber over time, but a high quality resin and proper application will ensure the product will look good for years. We have showers that are 8 years old and look amazing. We set expectations regarding ambering to our customer when using white. When doing earth toned or darker colors, ambering is never an issue. If you have any specific questions I would be more than happy to chat, just give us a call. www.RK3Designs.com
@@RK3Designs Thank you. I thought instead of ripping down the old wall and putting in insulation then new drywall and painting, Why not just use the foam board on top of the old drywall with my own design over that whole wall. I get added insulation and a beautiful wall and it sounds cheaper that way. Lol Maybe I'm crazy. Thank you so much for answering my questions.

What's the best way to combine styrofoam panels continuously if your shower is wider than 4' ?

Can you use this as a seat for a bench in a shower? Is it durable enough to sit on?
We make the bench out of waterproof MDF. If it’s a small bench with good support, you should be fine.
Does RK Designs have a tutorial on the foamboard shower walls?
Yes we sure do!! Search my channel for “showers”
What kind of backing is on the shower walls prior to adding the foam/epoxy panels?
The walls should be prepped the same as if you're going to tile. We use the concrete board and then paint with RedGuard.
@@RK3Designs Thank you!!!
How much does the board bend when you pick it up?
Can you use 1/2 inch thick foam board?
It will be super flimsy and has a greater potential to crack. I wouldn’t recommend.
😍😍😍😍👏👏👏👏🔝
Thank you!!!
That thickener powder what is it called?
Foam is better than MDF?
Yes because it’s 100% waterproof and much lighter to work with.
