    I'm really glad video games figured out how to name their games a lot better so we don't get confused by numbered games like this. Also your editing skills are showing!

      Proof that video games did not in fact learn how to name games better :
      1. Kingdom hearts series
      2. ....
      Actually kh is so bad no other examples are necessary. Lol.

    Another cracking video mate. Yet again I'm so impressed by the editing and aesthetics - your style is seriously so developed and nice to look at!
    As for the game - it looks bonkers. I'm enjoying this series as the NES is a bit of a blind spot for me so its cool to see a werid but somewhat cool game I had no idea even existed! Long live Konami man and the Tech pyramid!

    This video dropped while I was right in the middle of my King Kong movie marathon, Just finished King Kong (1976) Next is Queen Kong and then the King Kong Lives which you mentioned (they don't look very good lol)

      Cool timing! I haven't really seen much outside of the Peter Jackson interpretation, but looking through resources for this video it made me really want to watch the first. It has a really neat aesthetic. I did end up watching the original King Kong v. Godzilla fight while this was processing though. Good stuff.

    I'm so pleased to see you covering this game. I'm aware of this game because Satoe Terashima did some of the music, and they went on to make the music in Castlevania. You can hear their style in the music in this!
    There was also an MSX game of King Kong 2, but you play a human. I love digging back into these obscure old Konami games.
    And you'd better believe I'm stealing some of your presentation style. Your videos are so beautiful to watch.

    • @HPRshredder
      @HPRshredder  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm glad you enjoy the style and find it so nice to look at! I'm sure you know to an extent; but sometimes when you're looking at something for a long time editing you can no longer tell if it looks good or not. Specifically with the gameplay segments, I try to make sure the borders aren't distracting from the gameplay itself by blurring it a little extra and adding a color gradient to sort of distinguish the borders from the center of the screen. I don't actually mind black borders, myself; but I'm always tempted to play with that. I did see the MSX version as well but it looked considerably worse. I'm not really planning to mess wit the MSX much; Famicom is basically the oldest I plan to go for now.

    This gives me vibes similar to another Konami licensed title, The Goonies 2 (which is based on an non-existent movie, confused me for years as a kid), where it's got a lot going for it but so many little flaws hold it back. Think you hit the nail on the head with the conclusion on what keeps it held back compared to the all time greats, the sense of exploration starts as a strength only to become a liability as the game goes on.

    Shame the actual game design wasn’t the best in some ways, but it at least has cool ideas. I do like seeing all of the crazy gameplay concepts these old titles come up with. I love the face almost every type of gameplay possible for the hardware is on the Famicom and NES in some form or another.

    • @HPRshredder
      @HPRshredder  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It really is too bad; but a romhack could definitely fix a lot of the issues. Would it be worth hacking for the two or three people out there who would get a kick? Probably not. But I'm definitely taking away the top-down jumping controls. I want to work on some indie projects and I love the physics of King King's jump. I had honestly been looking for something that feels good like that.

    I remember getting a mini strategy guide in a Japanese magazine that my grandfather picked up for me and for most of my life I thought this game was all done in sepias and browns; I didn't know that Japanese magazines did a lot of monochromatic newsprint production as the norm. Surprised af when I found out there was crazy colors in this :D

    This game feels like a fever dream, like, seeing you talk about it it just seems so weirdly and uncharacteristically developed for a dumb movie license game. Yeah, it doesn't seem like the level design is very good, but like you said it has a lot of interesting ideas.
    Also, my man, that "jelly bean dragon"? Was that not just a giant centipede bug worm thing? It was only on screen for a second but it had a lot of body segments and I swear it had mandibles too.

    • @HPRshredder
      @HPRshredder  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, it's kind of like a bug-deer-centipede-dragon. No legs, just orbs. It's described as a dragon, but it does look a lot like a centipede. As for your first point -- yeah, it's kind of funny to me putting in so much work and effort for a game like this. I feel more pressure to make a good video with solid presentation when a game is really good, but it's fun to give games that no one talks about just about the same treatment lol. Spending hours on the thumbnail and taking care to shoot glamor shots of the box and cartridge of a game that has maybe two other reviews of it is something you can only find here, my man.

  • @realsquirrelhours565

    Had to catch up with this one because I've been busy, but this is a game I've always seen in passing but never tried. It's always looked intriguing, but seeing this definitely makes me reconsider it a bit. It definitely seems like a Kid Icarus type situation where the game has really good ideas, but very mixed execution. Also very interesting to see early Konami fumble with design in their early Famicom titiles when so many of the games that eventually made it to the West were incredible. Speaking of tie-ins and Konami, I do wish we got the original Goonies game in the States because that one is legitmately challanging and fun, especially as a fan of the movie, although I do think the sequel game is a step up in complexity and design. I'd definitely recommend it as a fairly decent and fun early Metroid-vania experience if you haven't checked it out already. Wonderful review once again!
    Edit: Just noticed my name in the credits!! Thank you for including me :D I'm always happy to support your videos.

    Finally catching up on your 2022 videos...
    As much as I love to see your thoughts on games I know fairly well, I almost find these videos where you cover JP-only games that are outside of my experience even more interesting. This one really seems like a mash-up of different ideas -- the rock throwing makes it look like a top-down run-n-gun shooter a la Commando, but then you also add in top-down jumping/platforming along with an exploration factor from the interconnected level design. Sometimes you just want a game to focus on the things that it does well, instead of adding more to the pot.
    If you had come into this with the mindset of making your own maps, would that have improved your experience at all? Sketching out levels on paper was one of my favorite things to do back in the day, and this game seems like it might be perfect for that kind of thing. People often talk about how Zelda compels them to burn every bush and bomb every wall to find every secret, but that doesn't really seem any less tedious then checking which screen exits are real. (Not that I disagree with the critique that the game's visual language could be more refined.) But maybe, as you say, there's not enough reward to be found here for the work.
    Either way... I appreciate you, man. Looking forward to catching up with the next few videos.

    • @HPRshredder
      @HPRshredder  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Unfortunately it has been tough to be consistent so far this year so there isn't too much to catch up on! I really wish I had more time to work on these but if something comes up that takes away a weekend it can mean delays for me since that's when I can get the most consistent work done on editing and filming.
      About making my own maps, I DO like to do that. I did it with Metroid a bit as well as Zelda, but what was different and frustrating about this game was just that there was no consistency in showing the player where they can and cannot go. There are probably 30+ screens that display four open borders but you can only actually move through two of them. Kind of like invisible walls. So you have to walk around the edges just to find out where there is no collision. If they had simply drawn walls and borders where you cannot go as they do in Zelda, it would have been a much more enjoyable experience.
      I don't think it's necessarily comparable to the thrill of finding or searching for secrets in Zelda, since it's not exactly a secret, it's just the overworld. Also, with Zelda, there's a really good design language. While some of the secrets are completely random, you definitely start to get a hunch for where they are. There isn't any such consistency in King Kong II. I think if you play it you'll definitely understand.
      But I appreciate you as well, good to see you back! I missed your comments. You might see your name at the end of a few of these videos FYI!

      @HPRshredder  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Brian, hope you're doing well!
      I miss your input and if you did end up watching any more uploads, I hope you enjoyed them. I remember you mentioned sketching things out in this comment, and that's something I ended up doing on two occasions in Zelda II which is the video I'm currently working on now.
      Just wanted to check in since I hadn't heard from you in a while. ✌

    Looks like the typical 80s release, devs implemented something very well, controls or level design or graphics or game play and mechanics or music and sound, but all the rest of the game sucks. It is probably because back in the day mostly common releases were made by very small groups and some times even by solo devs. I like to work alone, but different people can brainstorm more ideas, bring diferente expertises into the design and just give more feedback in general, since back in the day extensive testing wasn't so common. You end up with a lot of titles "If it had only this or that different it would be so much better..." Because of decades playing games, and more well design games, most of those things are so obvious for us now. But back in the day videogame was still in its infancy.
    Very nice review as always, you kept it entertaining even without extra information to talk about the game.
    Some times look like you are still tweaking the aesthetics as it feels like it is improving more and more, I like the nostalgic feelings it makes me feel. Your opinions and perspectives are always informative and entertaining. And the CRT is the third best character of the show, only behind the presenter and the nes itself. XD
    I just wish youtube did its job and notify me when a new video is on. ¬¬
    See you in the next one. Cheers.

    • @HPRshredder

      It's a very good point you make about small teams and there being no "industry standards" yet in regards to what people expect with a game. Small teams, too. Castlevania also has a very tiny team. Lots of these games only have 3-5 people and it's amazing to me the quality they were able to achieve with such limitation.
      I'm glad you notice the little tweaks from video to video. I am still trying to make each video flow a little better, cut out things that don't need to be there, make sure the colors and everything look good and the audio sounds good. Also glad you appreciate the little CRT. It's a Sony Trinitron KV-9. It has a white coiled power cable that I really like.

    • @itsasecrettoeverybody
      @itsasecrettoeverybody 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@HPRshredder yes the lack of standards and small diversity in expertise of the teams makes the good games even more of an achievement. Usually the difference of the good games is they had a visionary dev behind it, someone that could understand the multidisciplinary aspects that make a game good. And implement it and/or communicate it well with the rest of the team.
      The work you are putting into the videos are showing. Each detail even the small ones like colors and background are always getting better and they already looked profissional before.
      The little fella you have, the crt, is a nice piece of equipment. Looks like a perfect match for retro consoles.
      Take good care of it, because it will become a forgotten technology soon, and it will not be an easy one to come back like the vinyl.
