My great-grandmother came to the United States from Sortavala in Karelia. My grandfather, too, spoke Finnish fluently, despite having been born in Michigan. I imagine this is the dialect they would have used with each other and I wish I could have learned it from them. It's lovely.
I passed through Sortavala on a very cold snowy night in 1994. We changed from a bus to a train, which involved a long wait in a room crowded with silent and dourly dressed Russians, some wearing big fur hats like members of the politburo in the big parades. Everyone was crowded into a small waiting room that contained an enormous wood fired heating boiler that seemed to occupy a quarter of the room and qive out very little heat. I believe at that time the station buildings were the same original buildings that were there when what is now Russian Karelia was evacuated by the Fins when they agreed to cede the area to Stalin at the end of WW2. Perhaps your grandparents were among them. Maybe even they waited in that same room. Michigan. Cold. Like Finland. Good choice.

Yes, I agree.. They are so amazing, I met Susan Aho and Johanna Virtanen in New York City when Varttina performed in Central Park. What a show that was !! They autograped Kokko for me :)
This song takes me to another place. :) Wonderful! I play both piano and fiddle and it's hard to find music like this out there, let alone people who enjoy playing this with such feeling. :)
I love the finnish language although I am german and don't understand very much of it. It sounds really neat --- and as nice song it sounds 1000 times as good XD
@HenryBrosowski The lyrics are in Karelian dialect, spoken in the Finnish side of South Karelia. Today, you can't find songs in Karelian from the eastern side of the border without a very strong Russian accent. The genuine Karelian accent has unfortunately almost vanished, also in Finland.

I think you mean Mari Kaasinen (the singer on the right in red plaid), who is one of the founding members of the band, has been a featured singer since early in their career, and is currently the only original member still in Värttinä after Janne Lappalainen (behind Mari on right, playing bouzouki) left the group in 2008. Way back on their second album "Musta Lindu" in 1989, she is the lead vocalist on one of their most popular songs, "Kylä Vuotti Uutta Kuuta" (several versions of which can be found on TH-cam), though the definitive version is on the album "Seleniko" (1993), & several live versions are just as good. The version on "Musta Lindu" is mostly formed, but the instrumental parts are haphazard (Janne hits some real clunkers on soprano saxophone--or could be a clarinet, it's hard to say without credits in the liner notes & going just from memory of what it sounds like).

All three were founding members in 1983, & Kirsi was in the band until 2002, Janne until 2008 & Mari remains the only original member of the band today.
