While watching this, I was reminded of growing up in California where boulgevilla are abundant and how to tell you no, you're not painting the flower. Then you mentioned it lol. The red part are leaves the white flowers are just that the flower not a stamen. I remember as a child learning that and being surprised, the ones we had were more burgandy and there are also purple ones. Also, wisteria are a vine not a tree. They are considered a pest vecause they kill the tree they climb on. Although they are one of my favorites. I usually watch you on TH-cam TV but had to come to me phone to comment, I fell and broke my arm 3 weeks ago and watching these videos are a distraction. I do have your books and brushes. Thank you for all you do and for being willing to learn about things you dont know.

This is absolutely stunning. I'd love to hang it on my wall. Bougainvillea are one of my favorite plants and very common in California, which is where I'm originally from. Yes, the pink parts are a type of leaf called bracts. 🙂 I also want to mention that I just love that little music in the background of your videos.

Where I live in South Carolina, bougainvillea thrive in the summer because of the heat. However, they are still considered as an annual. We have moderate climate in the winters but still cold enough to kill tropical plants. I must compliment you because you have captured the sheer petals beautifully! They remind me of semi transparent crepe paper! Delicate and a joy to have in a hanging basket! Loved this video. I am thinking I need to get your rigger brush! Thanks Harriet, you brighten my days!

Wonderful tutorial. Bougainvillea can be found absolutely everywhere in Australia and we seem particularly fond of them here in Brisbane, Queensland where they can be found trying to escape large urban street planters, pots and fences in riots of colour all over the place.

Love the bougainvillea! I live in Florida (the States) and we have it all over down here. It grows so easily, some homeowners consider it a nuisance plant! They come in all sorts of reddish, pinkish, purplish colors. I believe, like poinsettias, the color parts are called brachts and the blossoms are actually the little white flowers in the middle. They have a tiny dark pistal and stamen in the middle of them. They are so lovely and you did an excellent job capturing them! 😍

Bougainvilleas have super thick and dangerous thorns! They are beautiful and cover a lot of space, but you have to be careful when walking around them, ask me how I know! I had two big ones when I lived in Florida, USA. The "flowers" are leaves. Great painting!

Thoroughly enjoyed this tutorial. We lived in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia for several years as expats and bougainvillea were very popular. We had an enormous one and anytime I see them I am reminded of the beautiful flowers. Although it is a desert country people took advantage of irrigation and had lovely garden spots. Canada's climate is a little too cool to grow these lovelies.

Sharing with you :-) On a bougainvillea the brightly colored leaf-type structure are bracts. As in dogwoods and also poinsettias, the bracts protect the central diminutive flower. In sunny California there are also hot pinks, purples, golden and even a rusty chocolate variety. Instead of the massive vine, there is now a more manageable bush-type variety. Only wish that thorns came as an option on this beauty!
Thank you for another great tutorial! ♡

I would love to know if those extra things in the flower are actually leaves! I think bougainvillea love sun more than heat. It can get pretty cold where I live in California yet our bougainvillea are quite prolific - sometimes too prolific. I had the three very unruly bushes in our walkway dug up because I didn’t like the thorns that wobbly little toddlers might stumble into. Nearly 10 years later, persistent bougainvillea vines have popped back up to compete with the jasmine bush we had planted in its place. It will be interesting to see which will prevail between the two because the jasmine are popping up all over the place too. I am rooting for the jasmine which have no thorns and smell wonderful!
