Dear Pramila, Thanks for asking - we're glad to be of help. Unfortunately, I'm not quite sure what you mean by "code with variables"; codes apply to segments of a document, while variables apply to a document as a whole. In other words, it is technically not possible to code with variables. To process an opened ended question as a variable, one would usually first let MAXQDA import it as text (it will be automatically coded with the name of the respective column, which is usually the question), then code this text, then one could transform the codes used as document variables.
