Come Monday, which fast food workers get raised to $20 an hour?

  • As of Monday, a new law mandating $20 hourly wages for fast-food workers goes into effect. That will give many low-income workers a big boost in pay they otherwise would not have gotten. But there are exceptions.

Robots cost way more than that, but they are still far more of a value than most people realize. A machine that can do the work of two people can effectively replace 4 of them since machines aren't limited to a single shift. If you figure with that $20/hour wage that there's another $5/cost due to payroll, unemployment insurance, worker's comp etc. than a full time employee will cost close to $50K/year. My 2-person machine can reduce labor costs by $200K/year, so even with other expenses, it will pay for itself in about 3 years.

I wonder if there will be a new leveling out. As they raise prices causing fewer people to eat fast food and move towards automation, I'm sure they will justify laying off or pushing out as many employees as possible, so the remaining employees will end up working harder to absorb to work that has to be done. They will make more, but they will be overworked and understaffed. And I'm sure they won't have tons of job openings for people to just shift to working in fast food from their lower paying jobs. These places are going to have to go crazy minimizing overhead and maximizing profit while trying to stay "afforable." It stopped being fast a long time ago. And some places its questionable if its ecen "food." I'm most curious to see what happens with In N Out. They always paid pretty well and kept their prices low.

The bread rule does not apply to Subway sandwiches and probably panera. It says excluded from the minimum wage hike if they bake their own bread and sell that bread separately. The only example I can think of at this time is Boudin's. Also, never been in a Panera bread so I wouldn't know. Otherwise, those pizza places should switch out breadsticks for garlic bread or bread loaves. But it should include bagels, donuts, and cookies, but doesn't... - Paris Baguette sells bread but not qualifying bread under the dumb rule.

The feds calculate Inflation by the price of Commodities at the wholesale market . When Inflation happens The US Dollar is loosing it's value and EVERYTHING MUST RISE including The cost of labor , Big Business does not like this because they see Inflation as an opportunity for profit growth . When Inflation happens if wages don't rise it throws the economy out of balance ( that is what is going on now ) . Big Business protects themselves by raising prices and expects The Middle Class and people At or Below Poverty level to take The Financial Hit so their Profit Margins can continue to rise , but if people don't have money they can't spend money and then The Economy suffers . Most Financial Experts will agree that a single person working a non-college degree job full-time should not be paying more than 30$ of their take-home pay towards housing and bills , this formula puts you right at Poverty Level . Why should the worker be expected to work their whole lives and just survive , might as well call it Legal Slavery . THINK ABOUT IT PEOPLE . If cost of living rises by 28% than so should wages or else what is really happening is you are taking a CUT IN PAY .

The minimum wage for any worker, fast food or not, should be at least $20. And by the end of 2025, that should be increased to $25 per hour. It is way too expensive to eat out, buy food, pay rent, or just take Uber somewhere. Places like McDonalds, Safeway, and Uber and Lyft can pay a lot more to their employees while still making a huge profit. As for housing costs, the AirBnB investors and landlords are charging the maximum amounts they can and artificially driving up housing costs - all in the pursuit of driving German luxury cars or Teslas. 2 percent of people are feeding off the 98 percent. Our political leaders need to tax the savings accounts of the rich, raise property taxes on landlords, increase gas tax, and eliminate tax deductions. The rich are getting richer and the poor are getting poorer.
Jimmy Carter once said that it was wrong for businessmen to write-off $50 lunches while a construction worker can't write off a $5 sandwich. He was dead right. And BTW, that sandwich now costs $15 and the business owners are writing off $600 lunches. Newsom is right to raise the California minimum wage, Alexandria Cortez is right to cut off tax incentives to companies like Amazon, and Biden-Harris are right to forgive student loans for poor kids.
