    Wonderful to see this great book being treated with respect by a new generation of readers. The same Apollo imprint has a completely undiscovered literary western by Charles Neider - a precursor of Cormac McCarthy, in a way - called The Authentic Death of Hendry Jones. A strange take on the Billy the Kid legend. Extraordinary thing.

      And they're just publishing four more titles this month. I am assured that all of these are much shorter than this one!

    Agree with your comments about The Man Who Loved Children. A powerful novel about two strong individuals who equally influence their five children. There are times when the raging nearly becomes too much, but the writing style is so griping (sic). To quote Randall Jarrell, " The Man Who Loved Children makes you a part of one family's immediate existence as no other book quite does". Worth a reread. I couldn't part with my copy, a Penguin Modern Classic printed in 1981!

      Oh you most certainly mustn't part with your classic copy. Very pleased to hear your thoughts chime with mine George. It's a big, bold book and the way things ramp up as you read made it all worthwhile.

    I SO much want that beautiful Apollo copy of the book - but alas, I shall go no more to London, so it'll have to make its way to Boston! I love the book, but my old mass market paperback would simply expire if I tried to read it again. As usual, I loved your comments - you have such a natural knack for talking about books! It must come in handy in your line of work!

      Very kind of you to say so Steve. I do enjoy talking about books, even when they're hard to surmise like this one! The Apollo editions are very lovely, and the design for the series is pretty neat. Who can resist a good-looking book?

    I am currently knee deep in this and absolutely loving it. Henny and Sam are both so interesting and dysfunctional in their own bizarrely unique ways. Thank you for spotlighting it - only half way through and I can feel it's weight as a modern classic.

      @VintageBooks  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ah yes, you're reading this along with Simon aren't you! (he mentioned you today when we met up)
      Both Henny and Sam are so horrific in their own special ways!!

    I think I heard Simon from SavidgeReads talking about this too. Looks a meaty book and I'll love to be included in the draw!

    What a wonderful review; brutal honesty but positive. Your comparing it to Dickens there captures my interest; I love Dickens! Sometimes it is good to pick up a big book that you have to work way through slowly to properly digest. That's one of the things I love about books; you can always pick up something light that'll have you speeding through the pages in a day or less or you can go for something slower that'll draw you in.Plus, like you said, the longer books give themselves the room to change the pace as well. Ah, I love a big book - more room for you to immerse yourself!

      Thanks for such a great comment Simon. You're right, there's always a book to suit your reading mood; short, long, fast, slow - whatever the weather.

      Oh no! You called me Simon! My name's Philip. My surname is Simons; I hope that this faux pas on your part increases my chances of being considered for the copy that you are giving away!
      Of course, I joke....sort of.

    • @VintageBooks
      @VintageBooks  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh man! It's because I'd just messaged someone called Simon - DOH! Many apologies Philip, it may not do anything to increase your chances but hey, commenting again in the future certainly will.

    Challenge accepted! I am trying to read more classics so i would love to be in the draw for this book. Do Vintage do any Brontes in their range? I am trying to find a copy of Agnes Grey with a reasonable cover but I am not sure what range of classics Vintage offers.

    • @VintageBooks
      @VintageBooks  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Jo. We created three Brontë specials last year which you can find out more about here: www.penguin.co.uk/articles/on-writing/cover-story/2015/nov/behind-the-bronte-covers/
      Agnes Grey wasn't one of them, however if you can hold off until January next year then we are going to issue it as a standard Vintage red-spined classic with a new cover design.

    • @VintageBooks

      Don't do the sum!! It's bad. I mean, even thinking 'I guess I could live this long' leads to thoughts like "Yeah, but I might not...!!'
