    Thank you.I want to know the difference between relative adverbs and content clause.

    • @SingleStepEnglish
      @SingleStepEnglish  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The basic difference between relative adverbs and content clauses lies in their functions and the types of information they provide within a sentence.
      Relative adverbs are words that introduce relative clauses and provide information about time, place, or reason related to the noun they modify. The most common relative adverbs are "when," "where," and "why."
      When: Refers to time. E.g., "I remember the day when we first met."
      Where: Refers to place. E.g., "This is the house where I grew up."
      Why: Refers to reason. E.g., "I don't know the reason why she left."
      Function: Relative adverbs introduce relative clauses that describe or give more information about a noun in the main clause.
      Content clauses, which are also known as noun clauses, are dependent clauses that function as a noun within a larger sentence.
      They can serve as the subject, object, or complement in a sentence. Content clauses are often introduced by the conjunction "that" or question words like "what," "where," "when," "why," "how," etc.
      That: E.g., "I believe that he is honest."
      What: E.g., "She knows what she wants."
      Where: E.g., "I don't know where he went."
      Function: Content clauses act as nouns and can take various roles in a sentence, such as the subject, object, or complement.
      Here are some examples to explain the difference:
      Relative Adverb Example:
      "This is the restaurant where we first met."
      The relative adverb "where" introduces a relative clause ("where we first met") that provides additional information about "the restaurant."
      Content Clause Example:
      "I don't know where he went."
      The content clause "where he went" functions as the object of the verb "know."
      In summary:
      Relative Adverbs introduce relative clauses and provide more information about a noun (usually related to time, place, or reason).
      Content Clauses act as nouns within the sentence and can function as subjects, objects, or complements. They are introduced by conjunctions like "that" or question words.
      I hope that helps!
      Steve

    I don't understand the part of the verb tenses. You're saying that know and met are the same tense but met is past and know is present... I'm confused

    • @SingleStepEnglish

      @danielaroyero0588
      I apologize for the confusion. I should have explained that (4:21) ...this combination of tenses is common in English when discussing past events that have a present relevance or when stating a fact or piece of information that remains true in the present.
      In this case, the speaker is saying that they have knowledge about the specific past event of meeting someone and that knowledge is still applicable in the present.
      Thank you for catching that!
      Steve

      I wish you all the best on the exam.
      That is if they have not taken the exam yet.
      If they passed the exam, you can say...
      I am so elated that you passed the exam.
      Elated means to be very happy.
