He told me that the Alumni & Fans cockiness wore on him at times. In my old gym in Costa Mesa ca. There were several former USC players who were great guys ,very humble. The best being Hall of Famer RON YARY.

I think part of getting older, as a CFB fan, is going from "I hate that guy" to "man I feel really lucky to have seen him play live." I remember watching the bush push with my best friend when we were college roommates. I was just saying today i remember seeing Ron Dayne running all over my most favored but hapless big ten team, while young me stood fuming despite the bitter cold weather. Any part of any of that, used to make me so angry, is such a wonderful memory. College football is just the best.

As a longtime Washington Husky fan, I obviously have no love for the University of Spoiled Children. And I absolutely hated them during the early 2000s when they were elite with Pete Caroll, while we were going through our worst years in program history (still trying to forget that winless season). But I’ve always had respect for the program, and how they proved to the rest of the country that the PAC 10, and West Coast football in general, was legit. East Coast bias has always hurt us teams out West, and I always thought it was wrong that the NCAA gave USC the death penalty for doing something that all other big eastern schools do. USC football is the powerhouse of the West Coast, and the NCAA basically killed West Coast football for the last decade. When USC is good, the rest of the PAC is good. Here’s to hoping both our programs become elite again. ✌️☔️

Josh did an a good job describing the sub cultures of the time. Laguna Beach was such a huge influence. Trust me as a native to Los Angeles county, the rest of the “have nots” were jealous and wanted what Laguna Beach had. We tried to replicate it in ouir schools. Look up year books of some of the high schools in the area. We were trying to live that. GIrls were trying to have relationships and spend their friday nights at the beach around the bonfire. The theme song of the Laguna beach TV show was” The rest is still unwritten”. What a time to be alive. It was great to hear what the other side of the country thought of our area at the time.
Even Oregon in its mighty reign has not accomplished what USC has. Thats saying something. IN the West there is only one team- USC. A lot of people in California would love for USC too take off. The only ones who dont want it is- USC.

This explains some things. So the SEC SEC SEC was/is indoctrinated into kids, even when the only thing SEC fans had back then, and spent every Sat explaining to anyone who was unfortunate enough to be within ear shot, was that they all beat each other up so they could never win big games because they were all beat up. Bud Wilkerson was before my time, but some of us actually watched the games when Bear, Royal, Switzer, Osborne, Woody, Bo, Bowden, Holtz, and Jimmy Johnson (I hate to add Paterno but he was a factor back then) were all coaching in the most meaningful football games year after year and no one believed or thought that the SEC was the center of the football world, because it wasn't. Only one of the most recognizable/legendary coaching names of the day was a SEC coach. Dooley, Fulmer and even the Ole Ball Coach simply weren't at those others level. Friday Night Lights wasn't about football in SEC country. Take away Hershel Walker and Bo Jackson and the SEC wasn't even going to get on any highlight reels back when a lot of us were already huge fans of college football. That is just the truth and Spurrier, Dooley and Fulmer are all coaches I admire greatly.

I do hate USC and I'll admit it since 1982. I was a kid growing up in So Cal and they always had the reputation of kids being spoiled rotten with rich parents and they always seemed like entitled brats and so we're many of their fans so I always wanted them to lose. It started when I saw my very first college football game at the LA coliseum right before my 13th birthday in November of '82. That game was known as the phantom touchdown game cause there was an actual fumble by a USC RB named Charlie White who went over the goal line without the ball and the officials actually gave him a TD even though he had fumbled inside the 2. Notre Dame the team that got ripped off that day proceeded to win the next 13 straight years. That was poetic justice for the University of Spoiled children. And now more than 42 years later, I still hate em and always will. My favorite game ever is when my Alabama Crimson Tide beat em 52-6 on opening day in 2016. It's always a great day when the Tide win and USC loses.

What I hated about USC was they dominated a weak conference. Then, in any chat, a USC fan would talk about stats. My position was always that USC would have been in the top tier of the SEC, however, those long winning streaks and gaudy stats would have been GREATLY diminished if they had lined up and played real teams week after week.

Ain't no one cared about SEC football after the 80's there wasn't a single soul in America saying "lsu and bama are playing !" From the 90's to 2007
Pete Carrol and harbaugh and the ducks with Ohio state and Texas dominated viewership and fans and the sec was an after thought
Florida gators saved it from probably a restructuring and collapse like the pac 12 and old money combined with the espn contracts are why the sec is what it is but in terms of top football
There was never a team that could compete with the west coast football dynasty
