Given that $150 on the Fiio felt like I didn’t add any benefit, I’m wondering if it’s underpowered or inadequate components for meaningful improvement, or both. I see people consistently insist that the R70x needs amp to properly drive them. I used the balanced output on the Fiio K11. Given that it’s just going to sit alongside my existing PC and speakers, a DAC/Amplifier combo is ideal, but I’m flexible. Well presented review. Would have been good to know how it compares to other r2r dacs, obviously more expensive than this. Also, as compared to other dacs in general especially because r2r dacs are usually liked for their natural tone and timbre, realism etc (albeit at the expense of detail retrieval, airiness etc) say in comparison with other benchmark dacs like the Mojo 2 for example? Thanks in advance, cheers.
Sorry haven't heard a Mojo 2 but for a brief moment at Axpona 7 months ago. It's been even longer since I heard a Mojo 1. I don't recall enough to give a fair assessment. As for other R2R DAC's, I haven't heard them since I reviewed them and don't recall enough to compare them fairly.
The differences between the two are noticeable but not drastic, comes down more to preference and pairings. So in a way, kinda like the Hd6xx comparisons.
Excellent review of the R2R and comparison between the K11 original. From an FPS gaming perceptive where directional positional accuracy and precise spatial audio queues are important, would it be correct to assume that the original Fiio K11 would be the preferred choice.
I am not much of a gamer these days and I mostly play sports and racing games. In my honest opinion, I do enjoy gaming with the original better than the R2R as it seems to be slightly more accurate in placement.
@@TheHonestAudiophile that’s great and thanks for taking the time to reply. One last question, which filter on the original K11 did you find worked best? I’m undecided on 1 and 4 as my main go to and the 6 if I want no filter.
Depends on the DAC choice, the Sabre is more neutral and has slightly better detail retrieval and resolution, the AKM is not quite as warm and has similar details and resolution.
Kinda wish you had done a lid off look at this unit. Curious about the resistor array, whether they’re discrete or a chip. Reason is would be cool if this dac is possible in a portable audio player.
Hello sir. I just discovered ur channel and i like ur reviews. I wld love to hear ur opinion on Sennheiser HD 490 Pro, and to compare it with other Sennheiser headphones..

Dave, I see that you have Moondrop Para, could you tell me if these headphones will be well driven by FIIO? I already have R2R and I'm considering whether to get the Para 8Ohm or the HiFiMan XS 18Ohm Thank you in advance for your answer :)
The Para is a harder to drive planar headphone but the R2R does drive it with hi gain and balanced. I haven't heard the Edition XS but briefly at Axpona 24, about7 months ago.
@@TheHonestAudiophile Hello, I already have the headphones, this is not my first contact with Para, I must admit it ;) the headphones are great, I can't take them off my head for hours. It's a pity that this particular piece has a problem with the clamp, it doesn't exist in this copy, it irritates me, but I don't want to bother with returning it anymore. As for the listening experience, let's say I'm a basshead who fell in love with music again thanks to these headphones :) I was tired of listening to music all the time - bass boosted, and this Moondrop cure me.
Will this drive the sennheiser hd800s or not enough power for them? I'm coming from topping e30+a90 and hifiman sundara and was thinking to change them for the k11 r2r and hd800s
@@TheHonestAudiophile thanks for the answer! Unfortunately I'm from Italy and here is not that easy to get the drop h8xx. Maybe is it better the smsl raw-ha1 as an amp than the fiio for the Hd800s?
I'm on the fence between the Hifiman EF499 or the Fiio K11 r2r....is it worth it to spend a bit more for the Hifiman or no? Sound is what I care about most, not features or looks, etc.. Your suggestion?
@@davidristic3800 Sorry...I simply meant quality. Subjective, sure but if someone has experienced both and confidently said there is an obvious step up from one to another ...or said they felt very little difference at all I would get the lesser priced k11..... But the advice would only be valid from someone who's tested both. Hope that makes sense.
@@rossheard9446 That makes sense...I believe that the Hifiman is not as detailed or resolving as the Fiio...it has a more relaxed overall sound, but still very pleasing sound. If you are looking for a slightly more true to source sound, I would think the Fiio is the way to go. But I have not compared both, nor do I have the same ears as you. I would say Amazon is your friend...order both, try them out, send back the one you don't want.
Which headphones would you give it for a perfect combo, please ? My Meze 109 Pro are absolutely perfect with my Fiio K9, but I lose too many details imo associated with the K11 R2R. So I'm looking for a pair of a bit more resolving headphones, without being boring. Thanks for your reviews who have great value imo.
I still have the og IFI ZEN DAC & CAN, should I replace the DAC part with this? Also, I heard a lot of people complain about the noise floor, can anyone address that?
It's been a long time since I heard the og Zen DAC. I recently reviewed the Zen 3 DAC and I would take the Fiio K11 R2R over it. As for the noise floor, there is some with more sensitive IEM and headphones. Here's a link to my Zen DAC 3 review: www.thehonestaudiophile.com/post/ifi-audio-zen-3-dac-can-3x-more-zen-honest-audiophile-impressions
Hello Dave can those fiio k11's play as dac and thru headphone output at the same time just like aune x1s series? I need fixed output on the RCA and use headphones at the same time. Can they do that? Or when you connect headphones RCA stops?
@@TheHonestAudiophileam not talking between balanced 4.4 and SE 6.35 im talking about any of those outputs + RCA in fixed mode. So the answer is no i guess
@@TheHonestAudiophile thank you Dave for the answer i really appreciate that the only reason i want to replace my Aune with fiio because ALPS potentiometers start to pissing me off and this k11 is a downgrade from the Aune anyway thanks for the respond 🫡
Odd question, when using the headphone output either balanced or unbalanced does it still send audio out of the rear RCA L&R sockets? reason I ask is in my desktop setup I have an external VU meter just to watch, it does nothing to the audio as I listen with headphones all the time I just need to also feed the audio into the VU meter, can it do that? I know you said they a seperate can that be changed ?
How does this compare to the Zen Dac v2 for soundstage and sound signature? I'm thinking about one for gaming on my PC (soundstage is really important) and for listening to EDM.
Similar in a lot of ways, differing in power output, filters and extras like xbass and xspace. As for sound, the K11 R2R is a little more euphoric in presentation, a little more immersive sounding, the V3 may have a slight edge with detail retrieval and resolution. Overall, similar but the K11 R2R sounds more rich and accurate tonally. Personally, I would pick the K11 R2R over the Zen 3. But neither are a bad device.
A remote would be nice for those who like to hear differences between NOS and OS, raise volume, change gain settings, change outputs, etc. Everyone has different usages; to each their own.
Been a long time since i have heard the K7. But if memory serves me correctly, the K7 is a little warmer, thicker presentation with slightly less detail retrieval and resolution. But I have haven't heard the K7 in a long time nor have I compared side by side.
Been a long while since reviewing the Multibit and not hearing it since. If memory serves me correctly, they're similar with the MB having better details and resolution. But I don't have one to do side by side comparison.
Been a long time since I reviewed the K7. If memory serves me correctly, the K7 is a little more warm, not as airy, has similar details and resolution. Sorry I don't remember anything else and didn't do a side by side comparison.
Hello. I know that we have already exchanged after my old comments on this subject, but I ask the question again: what is the use of a today's MacBook owner (with M2 or M3 chip), including MacBook Air of the same generation, of spend money on an external dac (or a dac + amp stack) since the internal DAC that equips these MacBooks of the Apple Silicone era by default is ALREADY itself of very high quality and compatible with high impedance professional headphones? I can personally testify to this since I was able to compare for months the internal DAC of my MacBook Air M2 with that of different quality external DACs, on the use of my Beyerdynamic DT-990 Pro headset with 250 ohm impedance (whose sound I really like). For a Windows user it’s perhaps necessary, but for a MacBook M2 or M3 owner it is not at all significant or essential. Obviously I'm only talking about the precise context where the headset is only used on the computer, I'm not talking about the context where the external dac/amp will be used on large speakers for listening to HI-Fi living room music.
As I've mentioned in the past on numerous occasions throughout my channel history, I have no experience with MAC/Apple devices when it comes to my audiophile experience. I owned an Apple dongle a long time ago and it sounded awful with my Samsung phone and it was given away to a friend who had an Apple phone. As for using a MAC/Apple headphone output with headphones, no experience so I can't advise as to what benefits an external DAC and amplifier would make. All impressions made in my channel are made from Windows, Linux, Android devices connected to externals and an Allen & Heath QU24 used at my church. I don't use the headphone output of my laptops often but I find them to be sub-optimal in comparison to the externals. Obviously my phone doesn't have a headphone output so I use USB C dongles. If you don't hear a significant difference and don't see a reason to upgrade, then don't if your content with your MAC headphone output. I would think that with certain headphones there maybe a benefit but I can't confirm that as I don't have experience with MAC/Apple. You're question is valid but needs to asked if reviewers who use Apple/MAC devices and if I were you, I'd get a lot of responses to help you find the answers you seek.
I am extremely surprised, almost astonished, that you use Microsoft or Android products rather than Apple's which, not only for audio, but also for video and professional photography, are vastly superior in terms of equipment quality. I know it : I spent 26 years on Windows, I can tell you that Apple is like migrating from $800 equipment to $5,000 equipment but for a lot less money to buy. I will rephrase my comment by asking the question differently: how do you explain that you resisted the temptation to try Apple computers to this extent? All current MacBooks are like NASA machines compared to Microsoft's. Believe me, I experience it every day (and they are of course much more beautiful and durable). MacOs, in terms of overall ergonomics and infallibility, is a pure diamond in comparison. The only 2 reasons to buy a Windows PC computer is that almost all video games are designed for this OS. The other reason is that they are much less expensive : which is actually false in use if we are willing to accept to consider all the extremely sophisticated software presence that is included by default + the long active life assured by MacOs + the incomparable quality of construction + the quality of the screens (of the image) which, itself, is a constant on any Mac computer.
@paulwoaert @paulwoaert I actually use Apple computer at church with the Allen & Heath QU24. I find the OS to be difficult to understand. As for superior in audio and video, I disagree. Both have advantages and disadvantages. But I am not a professional with training with all the different audio and video applications. Both MAC and PC can be expensive and quite competent processing. As an amateur user with limited technical knowledge, I find that a PC and it's OS and applications are more user friendly and more than capable for all my needs. All my videos on TH-cam are recorded on my Samsung S24 Ultra with a USB microphone. I don't do any video or audio editing, the only editing I do is adding links and chapters. The jumps you see in the video are from me pausing the recording during the session, it isn't splicing or stitching videos. All audio is recorded with the Rode Podcaster USB microphone. If a Macbook is provided to the channel, I'll gladly do a comparison between it and my MSI laptop. But for now, I am sticking with my MSI as it is what I am content with.
the original power brick sound just medicore!!!! im using With Sotm Sps 500 power supply, sound just much Better!!!And if its not enough, put 6pcs lt 3045 regulator between the power, and sound started magically good!!!
I'm not going to argue the point that power supplies can't make a difference. But in my honest opinion it is ridiculous to pay nearly 4x the cost of the K11 R2R for the power supply. The Sotm SPS 500 costs $550. The stock power supply of the K11 R2R is more than plenty good enough for most listeners. But with all that said, I'm glad you enjoy the K11 R2R.

A resistor ladder is an electrical circuit made from repeating units of resistors, in specific configurations. An R-2R ladder configuration is a simple and inexpensive way to perform digital-to-analog conversion (DAC), using repetitive arrangements of precise resistor networks in a ladder-like configuration.
Dac of the week club …disposable equipment? Unless you can use some of the parts ? This technology is not stable it will change by next week? And that’s the problem with digital, just anything digital it’s only around for a minute, operating systems, connections ,chips , opamps ,all have the life of a house fly… it doesn’t inspire buyer confidence at all ! This stuff wouldn’t last as long as a lunch break for the employees at McIntosh! This is not equipment that has any staying power or value after. The volume control is the best thing about this? That’s the R2R ! If you could replace the volume pots on your pre amp with R2R you could have something useful …also silent videos suck ? This copyright Yoo tube thing is bullshit ! You must hear these components in some kind of way ? We can’t go to the HiFi stores and listen, so talking about equipment is weak and lame , and totally useless to make any buying decisions based on conversation? Definitely not your fault…I should start a site where music and equipment can meet ?

Thx for very good and honest review. From you point of wiev what Is the better way to connect k11 r2r to PC (USB or other imputs).
USB gives you most range with music file types. I use USB majority of time, rarely use any other connections.
Nice video. Would you recommend this over the basic Schiit audio stack? Thanks
Sorry haven't heard a basic Schiit audio stack but briefly at audio shows a long time a go.
@@TheHonestAudiophile I understand. It seems like 4.4 is becoming the higher output now when 3.5mm and 4.4 both exist on a dac amp combo.
That's normal case for amps that have both outputs, balanced has more power than single ended.
@@TheHonestAudiophile thanks I appreciate it
My pleasure, you're welcome
Is comparing the sound of the K11 to the K11 R2R kind of like comparing the sound of the HD600 to the HD 6XX?
I prefer no filter.
How does it sound compared to the Douk audio Q11, with the same price?
Depends on the DAC choice, the Sabre is more neutral and has slightly better detail retrieval and resolution, the AKM is not quite as warm and has similar details and resolution.
Excellent review. I wish they've added bt connectivity so that I can use it with my stereo setup.
I understand, there are some BT uses that it would be nice to have been included for.
Kinda wish you had done a lid off look at this unit. Curious about the resistor array, whether they’re discrete or a chip. Reason is would be cool if this dac is possible in a portable audio player.
Plenty of inside pics on the Fiio website.

Dave, I see that you have Moondrop Para, could you tell me if these headphones will be well driven by FIIO? I already have R2R and I'm considering whether to get the Para 8Ohm or the HiFiMan XS 18Ohm
Thank you in advance for your answer :)
The Para is a harder to drive planar headphone but the R2R does drive it with hi gain and balanced. I haven't heard the Edition XS but briefly at Axpona 24, about7 months ago.
@@TheHonestAudiophile Thank you very much. So for now I'm taking Moondrop Para.
Awesome. I look forward to hearing your impressions.
It's adequate with the DROP+Sennheiser HD8XX. Its not as good as more powerful amplifiers but it does a good job.
@@TheHonestAudiophile thanks for the answer! Unfortunately I'm from Italy and here is not that easy to get the drop h8xx. Maybe is it better the smsl raw-ha1 as an amp than the fiio for the Hd800s?
@RiccardoB.90 sorry haven't heard the SMSL RAW-HA-1
I'm on the fence between the Hifiman EF499 or the Fiio K11 r2r....is it worth it to spend a bit more for the Hifiman or no? Sound is what I care about most, not features or looks, etc.. Your suggestion?
+1 for R2R, EF499 it is more sterile, analytical.
When you say "sound is what I care about most", that kind of leaves it open to interpretation...what specifically do you mean? What are you after?
@rossheard9446 Sorry haven't heard the Hifiman EF499.

Also, I heard a lot of people complain about the noise floor, can anyone address that?
It's been a long time since I heard the og Zen DAC. I recently reviewed the Zen 3 DAC and I would take the Fiio K11 R2R over it.

Hello Dave can those fiio k11's play as dac and thru headphone output at the same time just like aune x1s series? I need fixed output on the RCA and use headphones at the same time. Can they do that? Or when you connect headphones RCA stops?
You can only use one output at a time. You select in the menu which output to use.
@@TheHonestAudiophile only RCA or headphone output?
@@TheHonestAudiophileam not talking between balanced 4.4 and SE 6.35 im talking about any of those outputs + RCA in fixed mode. So the answer is no i guess
@gorgicvetkov932 you can select headphone out, line out or pre out, they don't all work at the same time.
No it doesn't work that way, only outputs to one output at a time.

How does this compare to the Zen Dac v2 for soundstage and sound signature? I'm thinking about one for gaming on my PC (soundstage is really important) and for listening to EDM.
I haven't heard the Zen DAC V2 since I reviewed it 2.5 years ago and I honestly don't recall enough to give a fair comparison.
@@TheHonestAudiophileoh okay thanks! How do you feel it compares to the Zen Dac V3?
Similar in a lot of ways, differing in power output, filters and extras like xbass and xspace. As for sound, the K11 R2R is a little more euphoric in presentation, a little more immersive sounding, the V3 may have a slight edge with detail retrieval and resolution. Overall, similar but the K11 R2R sounds more rich and accurate tonally. Personally, I would pick the K11 R2R over the Zen 3. But neither are a bad device.
@@TheHonestAudiophile Great thanks! And by "immersive sounding", you mean that K11 R2R has better soundstage than the Zen Dac V3?
@jdawg206A yes
Can it connect to soundbar or active speaker?
I didn't connect to a soundbar but yes you can use the preamp with active speakers.
Not sure how useful a remote would be. I set my DAC up, and have never touched in since.
A remote would be nice for those who like to hear differences between NOS and OS, raise volume, change gain settings, change outputs, etc. Everyone has different usages; to each their own.
Would anyone be able to compare the k11 r2r to the k7?
Been a long time since i have heard the K7. But if memory serves me correctly, the K7 is a little warmer, thicker presentation with slightly less detail retrieval and resolution. But I have haven't heard the K7 in a long time nor have I compared side by side.
How does it compare to modi multibit?
Been a long while since reviewing the Multibit and not hearing it since. If memory serves me correctly, they're similar with the MB having better details and resolution. But I don't have one to do side by side comparison.
This or the k7?
Been a long time since I reviewed the K7. If memory serves me correctly, the K7 is a little more warm, not as airy, has similar details and resolution. Sorry I don't remember anything else and didn't do a side by side comparison.
The resistors precision at 0.1% is too low. Needs to be at least 0.05% to compare with existing integrated R2R DACs.
R2r worth it for more price?

What the heck is an R2R?
A resistor ladder is an electrical circuit made from repeating units of resistors, in specific configurations.
An R-2R ladder configuration is a simple and inexpensive way to perform digital-to-analog conversion (DAC), using repetitive arrangements of precise resistor networks in a ladder-like configuration.
