    I feel like i’m the only one who wants to keep their 80 full time. I love the way it drives on and off road. Maybe if i had a bunch of driveline slop i would feel differently. To me Mr. T designed it this way for a reason and i see very few benefits if any from going part time.

    • @OzTrax4X4
      @OzTrax4X4  หลายเดือนก่อน

      The DX model was actually part time from the factory.
      While full-time is great, the benefits I find of being part-time far outweigh it.
      1. Less wear and tear as you're not driving the front axle at all.
      2. If you're being silly and destroy your front driveline, you can just unlock the hubs and let it free wheel and have a chance of making it out in rear wheel drive.
      3. Fuel economy and torque is improved as less components are being driven.
      There are probably more but that's all I have off the top of my head for now.

    Definitely need to do this to my 80. Anything to help the fuel mileage is a plus. Good vid Mic.

    Instead of a truck I have a sports car that’s full time 4WD (AWD) and wanting to convert it to part time AWD (4WD) to get the feel of RWD as well
    The sports car I have is a ‘96 celica gt4, how may I go about this? Is it on par with the process in this vid, or totally different…

    • @OzTrax4X4
      @OzTrax4X4  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Unfortunately, AWD is a very different beast to 4WD.
      To go rear wheel drive, you'd need to have a locking centre differential and no drive to the front wheels, which would be in the way of removing the CV shafts to accomplish that.
      Being that they are primarily front wheel drive biased, you'd probably have to do a lot more research.
      Maybe TOM's back in the day had a way to do it. 🤔

    I saw some converting video just removing small two gears btween companion flanged and welding the gear for rear flange . This for 100 series land crusier.

    • @OzTrax4X4
      @OzTrax4X4  ปีที่แล้ว

      That is effectively welding the centre differential which I wouldn't recommend when it's inside your transfer case, especially if it decides to explode and send bits of welding metal through your gear set and centre differential.
      That there is an expensive accident waiting to happen if you do that.
      My advice is to do it once and do it properly. 😎👌

    I got free wheeling hubs at front diff on my 80 series, does that mean or force me to change the spool in transfer case to part time kit aswel?

    • @OzTrax4X4
      @OzTrax4X4  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That all depends if it is operating correctly.
      You will need to have a centre diff lock button.
      If you can drive around with them disengaged and the centre diff lock not engaged then it would have the spool fitted.
      This really only applies to factory full-time 4WD vehicles.
      If it's factory part time, then it should work as per normal.

  • @narcosplays7948
    @narcosplays7948 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    It wouldn't work if you only replace the manual hubs ?.. mine it's a 94 full time.

    • @OzTrax4X4
      @OzTrax4X4  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Unfortunately not, as if you unlocked the manual hubs, drive to the cruiser would take the path of least resistance, which means you'd get no drive at all.
      By fitting the spool to the transfer case, it locks the centre diff to the rear wheels when not engaged in 4WD.
      Your centre diff button then becomes your 4WD button.
      I hope that explains it a bit better.

      That doesn't sound like a part time conversion issue, unless you haven't tightened up the spool properly or something 🤔

      Hey bud
      Yes, you'll need a part time conversion kit and a centre diff lock button.
      You just can't install freewheeling hubs to make it part time as you also need to fit the spool into the centre diff which is in the transfer case.
      To answer your question, yes, you'll need to fit the part time conversion kit so it drives the rear wheels only with everything unlocked and the centre diff button in the off position.
      Terrain Tamer are in South Africa and they sell the kits.

      Might sound kinda dumb and obvious, but have you also locked the front hubs?

    • @OzTrax4X4
      @OzTrax4X4  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      If you have locked the front hubs and it's still only operating in 2WD, then the electronic diff lock actuator motor on the transfer case may not be functional or the fuse/relay that operates it may be faulty.

      @69429boss Ah yes, that is because the drivetrain takes the path of least resistance.
      If the hubs aren't locked, then it will just turn the front diff and axles, not the front or rear wheels.
      With the CDL actuated, it connects the front axle with the rear axle via the centre diff.

      The black ones are prone to cracking due to being manufactured with a cast steel drive ring.
      The red ones are the better high performance heavy duty ones which are manufactured with a heat treated carbon steel one, so much stronger.
      I do have a pair of AISIN ones ready to go, should I have any issues though and since having the kit in, I've not had a single issue with the red ones.
      Hope that explains the difference 🤠👌
