I bought a 1993 FZJ 80 and have been watching a lot of videos. You do a great job and are an inspiration to the home mechanic. You have basic tools, and you are very clean, methodical and meticulous. I think you talk about the right level of detail and show us some of your mistakes as well. The music and editing is really good, too. Makes it easy and entertaining to watch.
I’m really enjoying the way you do videos. Particularly the level of explanation and detail of your descriptions. I even like that you aren’t afraid to show how you’re doing something for the first time. This is what DIY is about. Well done!
Format is perfect man. Dont change a thing and thanks for the videos they are awesome. I'm binge watching them faster than the last season of Yellowstone hahaha.
I would love to see if you could add a little budget section so we can get an idea of how high the bill can stack if we choose to take on one of these projects
Back in the 1960's my father was in the Brazilian military, he was being trained to be a mechanic, than the guy there (I have no idea of the patent) said to him "dismount and remount the transmission of that vw bug" my father did what he was told and.... somehow the car ended up with 4 reverse and 1 forward gear haha. I remembered this when you said that no matter how many times you do things with gears you always think you will mess things up.
Remember to apply silicone towards the inner line of the casing around the bolt holes to prevent oil leaks from the fasteners. If you run a bead on the outer edge like in the video, there's nothing to prevent oil from leaking out the bolts of the transfer. Even if it's for the mating half without oil, it's a good habit to reinforce.
Your shortened version of documenting an involved job obviously works for people. With my channel, I kill people with TONS of detail and explanation. The reason why we make super detailed videos is we don't want to lose anyone, not even a total beginner. With your style, there is no doubt in my mind some people will leave this video confused. In contrast to your 18 minute video, my channel is coming out with a 4-part video series on rebuilding the same HF2A transfer case, which includes the installation of the low range gear set you installed and also installing a high range gear set and the part-time 4wd kit. Our series amounts to around 4 hours of footage. We weren't the brains behind it though. We were just the cameramen. Our buddy Georg who owns Valley Hybrids, a Land Cruiser specialty shop in Stockton California does all the instruction, and he does an incredible job. With my channel, like you, I'm quite often learning while I'm filming. Probably around 95% of the jobs we film are us doing it for the very first time. We explain everything we are doing while we're doing it. If it ends up our technique didn't work, that's where video editing comes in. We talk about what didn't work so people don't make the same mistake and then we show people the technique that did work. It's more labor intensive to do it the way we do it, but your audience would benefit from your mistakes just as much it benefits from your successes. I applaud your willingness to help out your fellow man by making these videos. I'm just here to let you know and others reading my comments know, there is a much more detailed documentation of this job in existence for those that need the extra detail and explanation. You can find the series on my Timmy the Toolman channel. Just search this title: "80/100 Series Transfer Case Rebuild/Modification (Low/High Range Gears & Part Time 4wd Kit)."
Yes the process was very involved. I would hope people watching understand that whether it’s this video, or any of my engine rebuild (or other) videos, these projects take hours if not days and many mistakes were made whether they’re filmed or not. This is a learning process and TH-cam can make things seem flawless when they aren’t. I watch your channel all the time. I know your video will be great and informative. I just moved out of CA and used to live in a city south of Stockton called Fresno.
@@RM_Garage It's great to know you watch our videos. We were lucky enough to partner with Georg to create our series on this job. Georg has rebuilt around 200 of these transfer cases and he knows them like this back of his hand. Where did you move to? I'm retiring from the fire service in 6 months and moving from the California Bay Area for sure. I just haven't figured out if I'm staying in California or leaving for another state.
@@RM_Garage I was looking a Boise as a possibility. What part of Idaho did you move to? I'm not a big snow person, so I don't want to be buried in snow a large part of the year. I'm conservative and don't like how California is governed. Gavin Newsom is a complete moron. We pay a lot of taxes and don't get much for it.
@TimmyTheToolman that’s why a lot of people are moving I would assume. I’m in the boise area, but not IN boise. There are lots of towns by boise that are better to live in IMO. The snow isn’t terrible, honestly wish we had more! Having 4 seasons is really nice.
Great video man, l've been watching your Land Cruiser build since the beginning you are getting better in every video, and the editing is amazing. I'm really interested in watching more content from you and if possible please upload more frequently. By the way that 1FZ is a great engine because the design is pretty similar to a 2jz, so if u ever want more power that big inline 6 can take a bunch of boost!
Thanks!! I try to get them out as often as possible but working a full time job too and often busy on weekends. Doing what I can at the moment but hopefully can increase the output in the future!!
Just found your channel and started your series yesterday or the day before. I love the videos but this one you wanted input so for me I love when you explain things the more details the better IMO
@@DirtGarage I totally agree. I've done a few 4.7s in the older pickups and this looks more difficult. I have an 80 series now so this mod will be coming up soon for me
Good stuff for sure. Thanks for the video. Been watchin since the pickup days. Miss the first gen, helped inspire me to get my own, but the LC is a step in a cool direction
Thanks for this, I'm planning this job for my 97 and it's great to see the process and not just the sfm. Auburn Toyota Land Cruiser Association had a tech day today at valley hybrids for Tcase but I missed it. How's the 1fz coming? My refresh is running great but that coolant hairline crack still bugs me, bright side I have seen coolant move since I finished the 1fz refresh, it's a silly weep. I geared and ARB locked to 4:88 what a huge drivability different those 4:88 make on 35's, looking forward to seeing what the low range transfer case gears will do.
Hello friend, I have seen that you fix a lot of Toyota pick ups. One question, where do you get the parts to rebellion the transmission? I have a 22r Toyota pick up but the transmission is failing.
The leaking front and end seals (if I caught what was said correctly) it is a reliable sign the bearings are worn out. They both, bearings and seals, are supposed to be replaced. Apologies for the bad news.
You ever watch the “project farm” guys videos? If you ever can’t get Toyota fpig go get mopar aka dodges sealant. In his videos where he compares all the gasket makers dodges is the only one that holds up next to Toyotas.
I would not trust smaller gear teeth in my transfer case, also aftermarket gears are lower quality than toyota gears. I think best would be to have 2 of these transfer cases so you have 2.5 and 6.25 gear ratios if you use double low gear.

Another great video, basically you are doing a video service manual for the rest of us, thanks man. Your editing and format is really good.
Thanks!
The format and editing are fine. All your videos are great man, I'm looking forward to the new head installed video. Thank you, Jim
Thanks Jim!

Wow, what a compliment. Awesome!
No doubts, format is fine, pls continue what you do

Just found your channel. Looking up ideas for my triple locked ‘94. Content and format seem great so far! Keep up the good work!
Thanks!
Dude, these vids are sick. I loved each one in this series. Im just stoked to see all these videos that show what the inside of my 80 looks like
Thank you! Appreciate you watching the videos
Good content mate and well explaind.
thanks!
Do you have the video for when you did the seals for the Rear output shaft? Thanks
I don't, sorry! I used other videos on TH-cam as a guide.
@7:20 is using heat on a gear system a kosher move? I'm unsure about heat treatment that could be compromised.
Has to reach a certain temperature for that to happen and it wasn’t heated up to any extreme temp
I would love to see if you could add a little budget section so we can get an idea of how high the bill can stack if we choose to take on one of these projects
I could do something like a yearly cost breakdown of things I did.
Tackling this project on my 80 in the next few weeks, great video!
Nice! Good luck!
How'd ya like the results?

I did not catch, have you replaced bearings with new ones? Having given you had the transfer case disassembled it would be a good idea.

Awesome video bro

How long did this job take start to finish?
Man, this looks way more difficult than 4.7 gears in a normal gear case!
Is it? I bought my cases assembled in the past and only took them apart to reseal them/swap out an input shaft
@@RM_Garage Yeah man, I did the 4.7 and inputs myself. No press required. Still needed some modifying of the case for gear clearence though.

Will this fit a part time transfer case HF1A ?
Not sure, I would call marlin or trail gear

Check eBay!

Where can I find the gears
Try trail gear or marlin crawler.
Or Sumi makes a set which is supposed to be the best out of them
its ok no issues ok keep it up

FIPG is some good stuff!

@RM_Garage nice. I'm really enjoying going back through your build on this! Then on to your older videos!
The video is great!
Awesome video
So, how do u like it so far?
They’re awesome!
@ not too loud when youre driving?
@ I’ve never noticed anything
Those little cutting disks like to explode because you're not keeping them square to the rotation when they are buried in the metal.
Yep, hard to keep it square sometimes. These things also break sometimes when tightening them down. Cheap Amazon stuff.

Er? Sumo Gears are made in Japan and are same quality as OEM, according to people who have been rebuilding these T cases for decades.
