    Your face at 1:30 is to calm for getting that as a present, i would be crying, screaming, peeing, sweating and all other manner of things, what I wouldn't give for one of those. I've got a $177 squier which is great but it's a beginner guitar and i am no longer a beginner. Jesus if I had one of those Kurt guitars I would actually go wild.

    Definitely one of my favorite songs as well. I was 9 years old when Nevermind came out, and i remember the first time i heard the "watery" tone, it just tied in with the album cover perfectly. I spent hours every day listening to this album for quite a while back then. Long live the 90s

    Great recreation.
    The guitar tone on this song is still one of the most distinct I've heard; the depth of the chorus and the way it envelops the entire song while still maintaining a signature chime is pure ear candy. This is the song that got me into Nirvana and therefore subsequently led me to get more into music in general. This guitar sound was one of the primary things that drew me to this song, so it wouldn't entirely be a stretch to say that this sound being created on tape is part of what propelled my entire musical journey.
    Very impressed with how accurate your version was, these tone recreation videos never disappoint :)

    I think I read that Kurt wanted purple tones for the video, but the director didn't want it. In response to that Kurt dyed his hair purple. I also read that on June 1, 2008 there was a large fire in a universal warehouse, where, in addition to movies, the original masters of many discs were stored. Among them Nevermind. Recently in the meeting with soundgarden, Krist was asked about this and he replied:
    -I think they disappeared forever (6-12-2019)
    You are making a lot of progress with the software, you are putting many hours into it. Great so you will arrive prepared for Drain you😊

      A lot of masters were lost in that fire at the Universal vault. Sad day for music history :(

    • @NirvanaGuitars
      @NirvanaGuitars  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Have never heard the story about why Kurt dyed his hair for the video, very interesting! I've read contradicting things regarding that fire. I've read that the Nevermind masters were lost, but also read that someone who works for Universal apparently confirmed that no Nirvana masters were lost or damaged? Idk, it's all very confusing haha

    You did an amazing job at recreating this tone with the cleans, the distortion i thought was missing something, but only a little of something. I think another fuzzier guitar layer occupying some space about -8db quieter than the other guitar tracks might do it. I think i'm going to give this a try, i've made a few attempts at creating this tone using amplitube and were unsuccessful for the most part. they sounded good, but lacking. Plus i did the main guitar and the overdub in a single take, live style with no editing. I grew up recording on a tascam 8 then 16 track analogue to tape mixing console, one whole take is all you had really LOL. I've learned a lot of new tricks having switched to doing everything digitally and have spent the past few years learning to mix and master. I learned a few things from this video for sure, especially about Andy Wallace's involvement, I have been studying these songs for 25 years and I had never heard anything detailed mentioned about what he did so that was awesome to learn. Also, I wanted to share a few things that you may know but were not mentioned here. A more recent interview with Butch Vig seems to indicate the the cleans for this song were for with a Vox AC30 and possibly a Fender Bassman on one of the layers and a Stratocaster with humbuckers was used as well as his Jaguar i believe, it was that or the Mustang. I'll be sure to share my results with you and shout out to your channel for the things I picked up from this! Thanks again!!

    I think Butch vig said in a nevermind doc that drain you has the most guitar tracks on the album, which is 5.
    I'm thinking come as you are has 3-4 tracks but i havent given it an incredibly close look so idk. But i would kill for come as you are's guitar multitrack as well. As for lithium, there is a guitar stem available online of an outtake with the same studio tone (which would at least be good for studio tone reference) but i think its one guitar.

    The effort that you put into this is unreal. Just found your channel recently and love your work. I have an old MIM Strat with single coils and a Boss Katana Mk2. Trying to get as close of tone as possible which I've gotten decent for the chorus part but think I will need to eventually swap a hot rails into the bridge to get a better distortion tone. It's good enough for now but sounds a bit thin.

  • @aberdeenlizards

    This was and also still is my favorite song ever! Many years ago I had a perfect match to the tone through some dorky yamaha effects rack unit, I do not remember the name but it was a half size unit. The thing died though. Now I like the Poly Chorus which adds a nice bit of reverby delay to it. I play a 95 Jagstang on the neck pickup for this song through a Vox AC 30 which adds some warmth.

    Hey Eric! Just wanted you to know that I also own a jag and I think I got the come as you are almost identical. So I used the bridge pickup, a ds-1, the chorus setting on my amp and a flanger setting. So the pedals are basically the DS-1, Small Clone and the Echo Flanger.

  • @PhatLvis
    @PhatLvis ปีที่แล้ว

    The guitar sound on the record partially depends on its interaction with the bass, which doesn't strictly mirror the guitar lick, as Novoselic plays only the three low notes (root notes and walk in between) and omits the higher plucks (a minor third and then a fifth - the notes G and A, respectively). Also the main bass guitar was double-tracked an octave higher.

    There have been conflicting statements about the Universal fire and the loss of the masters for those two tracks, however, back in the day someone was leaking stuff taken directly from the master tapes which included an early take of Come As You Are. I might be wrong as it's been a long time, but I also think there was an early take of Lithium too. This was prior to 2008. I would imagine that stuff was already digitised by that point and it's how the leaker was able to share these songs, so it gives me hope that everything had already been transferred and the multitracks may yet exist. The Rock Band/Guitar Hero situation didn't do anything to help though with regards to letting us know what happened.

    • @stublad
      @stublad 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Here's a link to the version of CAYA I mentioned. th-cam.com/video/Oyis5ENgOiw/w-d-xo.html. I was sent this directly by the leaker back in the day via AIM. We met on the LiveNirvana forums and he shared this along with that scratch take of Lithium I mentioned previously. It's pretty rough.

  • @anthonysclafani3963
    @anthonysclafani3963 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Outstanding work. Really enjoyed the breakdown of how you made it. I made a CAYA demo a couple years ago and there's def additional chorus added imo, my small clone on its own was very close but lacked depth and wasn't as immersive. Def think that Lexicon was added. There's also some weird 12 string bass emulation Butch tried with Krist, which I'm guessing is him playing in different octaves. It's a very complex song production-wise

    • @NirvanaGuitars
      @NirvanaGuitars  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have also read that apparently there are multiple bass tracks with Krist playing different parts on each! Root note, harmonies and octaves. Ahh I want to hear all the isolated tracks sooo bad lol 😅 Agree with what you said about the Small Clone, it has the right feel but definitely can't fully recreate this studio tone on it's own.

      Found that video while researching! It’s not a great reference as it’s not a true isolated track. Once the drums kick in the EQ gets weird and it sounds very phase-y and you can still hear the rest of the band

    Butch Vig made Nirvana. Had he produced In Utero, the final product would have been better.

      They are pretty pricy 😣 but they are high quality instruments! I’ve had mine for 11 years and it’s still perfect. Have never done anything to do it beyond string changes and the occasional routine set up

      get a squier jaguar and change the pickups...1000 € saved. i modded a vintage modified series jaguar with a duncan jb in the bridge and a duncan jazz in the neck and changed the crappy bridge, everybody loved it afterwards and it sounds perfect for nirvana. do yourself a favour and get a HH Jaguar, otherwise you need to remove some wood as well for humbuckers. If i would not own too many guitars i would get myself a squier contemporary Jaguar, looks really really beautiful and is now at the moment only 489 €...
