  • Everyone is suddenly talking about "quiet quitting." Some people think it's about taking back your life, others think it's about "kids these days" being lazy. It's all just hype based on our long struggle with work-life balance.

    Well, you're gonna love the latest nonsense term then: "silent hiring". If I'm not mistaken, coined by the same person who coined this one, although I may be mistaken. It means "having employees take on additional work or responsibilities without extra compensation".

    It's the same exact thing that companies do to consumers, especially as a response to inflation. As inflation goes up the intrinsic value of the dollar goes down. As a response, the consumer will either have to pay more dollars to make up for that lost value or receive less. In the labor market workers are the sellers and employers are the consumers. Since they are refusing to pay more they should receive less.

      Interesting observation. Depends on where you live though. Over here in Belgium, wages are inflation adjusted yearly. I think we're one of very few countries that do this.
      Of course, that doesn't make much of a difference compared to other systems. If the cost of living increases, and your country does not automatically adjust wages to compensate, you'll have to talk to your boss about a raise. We just skip that conversation. And I'm under no illusion that as a result, we get fewer raises, and smaller ones at that, as the "index adjustment" (as it's known over here) will be deducted from what would normally be your pay raise. Similar to how the "free" extras you get with a purchase are not really free, but simply included in the price.
      That said, I prefer our system, as it means less assertive employees don't get left behind. They'll still suffer penalties on account of not chasing the promotions/raises their more assertive colleagues chase, but at least their buying power remains constant instead of decreasing.

    I prefer the use of the term shutting up loudly. But hey, who am i to make rules? Seriously, Chris, I have watched already several of your videos including one from 7 years ago and I find you knowledgeable AND agreeable to listen to and learn from.
    One thing catches my attention: What kind of contrived formula are the people of TH-cam using in your case specifically which puts the count of your subscribers at 10.6K seven years ago which is exactly the same as shown in videos from four or five months ago. I imagine that in reality you may have many more followers. Does anyone hate your guts? (No pun intended) Why?
    Still from Thailand, I wish you well.

      I have had this channel for years, but only recently started publishing seriously late last year. I had a surge of subscribers and then it tailed off the last few months. I have been neck deep in my next video and it has taken a while to finish, so I haven't grown much lately. I expect (hope) it will take off again once it is published.

    Wow. Like you said loosely defined. I had never heard quiet quitting. The title made me think of a goal of mine. To be more outspoken about my beliefs and ideas. I'm a very quiet person who needs to take a stand more often, especially when it pertains to my beliefs. However I don't like to offend even if the offense would be towards someone who is being extremely offensive. So initially I had a more literal idea of quiet quitting based on the straightforward definitions of both. In fact it doesn't make sense still as I contemplate it. Slacker makes sense, but someone who engages in the least amount of effort to be called a quiet quitter is baffling. Logically how does it track? I very much enjoyed the last sentence. Use words good. Perfect ending.

    The thing is, my friend, language is a living phenomenon - constantly changing, and there’s no point in trying to shut down word adoption. Personally, I like “quiet quitting". It connotes a new shade of meaning compared to those other words, for me: It's another phenomenon of the C pandemic, from working at home, cut off from interacting with colleagues in person - - gradually, day by day, you grow less interested in your job, you quietly disengage, eventually there is no going back, and you are now disengaging with awareness: you are quietly quitting. This is what happened to me. I guess I would recommend, if I may be so bold, that we think about Words from a constructive analysis, rather deconstructive …. like, why have they taken hold? what is their appeal? what new shade of meaning do they convey? 🙂

    • @ChrisTheBrain
      @ChrisTheBrain  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I understand your point on language, my focus is more the "culture" around a term. We use words expecting them to mean the same to us and others, not thinking about the baggage the term may carry depending on the context.
      In this case, my critique is more over the media-frenzy over the term.

    • @ezekielduran4386
      @ezekielduran4386 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes I understand your use and breakdown of language as well. However I didn't have a definitive idea of what was being described. Now through your thorough explanation I understand the term and it's relevance towards your situation. However showing up to work which is usually in a public domain and doing as little work as one possibly can cannot in anyway be called quiet quitting and not be misleading. Hence my confusion

      @@ezekielduran4386 "showing up to work and doing as little work as one possibly can " .. the work "Slacker" fits that type of person well, the term "Quiet Quitting" not so well - hence my motivation for taking issue with Chris the Brain's equating of them

  • @samuel.archer
    @samuel.archer ปีที่แล้ว +2

    That's not strictly true as you've defined it. It's simply the practice of showing up, doing your job, getting paid for your work, and going home. No more. No less.
    Employers hate when employees do their job (and only their job) without taking on additional (usually uncompensated) roles and coined the term Quiet Quitting to convince everyone that there is a new trend of employees being lazy for not putting in 110%
    This was largely in response to worker exploitation during the pandemic with the rise of both pro-union and antiwork sentiments.
    QQ is just a marketing gimmick to sway public opinion, and judging from your video, it worked.

    My humble submission for "Words Madder" is the term "Conspiracy Theory" which is used colloquially to mean "Crackpot Hypothesis" and this presents problems. In science, a "theory" is well-researched, and has both evidence & backing of the scientific community. When the terms "Conspiracy Theory/Theorist" are thrown about as a pejorative, the intended meaning is crackpot hypothesis. A lowly ignorant person with a question and a story. Confusing the two concepts prevents the object of much of investigative journalism and criminal investigation: uncovering possible criminal conspiracies.
    Successful conspiracies are numerous in history: The Manhattan Project and the F-117 development are but 2 declassified programs which amount to vast conspiracies of hundreds or thousands of people keeping a secret for multiple years. It's estimated that millions of Americans are currently under NDA from various corporations, conspiracies, or gov agencies. I think it's important for people to understand that conspiracies are commonplace. Look at court records. They happen every year.

      @ChrisTheBrain  ปีที่แล้ว

      You know, I do plan to cover "trigger words" at some point. "Conspiracy" is a good example, as it triggers the brain to shut down all credulity upon hearing it. It is designed by social ridicule, continually using a term as a pejorative.

    You’re completely missing the whole point of the new wave of us demanding our worth and not giving ourselves to some boss at any given moment. More responsibility, more money. We are no long scared to leave a place that doesn’t treat us properly.we are not your profit making machine for multimillionaires and huge companies. We will do exactly what our job description. Workers need to unite. This rat race we’ve all allowed the bureaucrats to mold us into accepting and working ourselves to death and being ok with that is a system that must change. We all must come together and change the global human labor exploitation program. Surely everyone can see the influence money has had on the civilized world. No longer should we allow record profits and world pollution from consumerism off the backs of the wilting middle class. We blame the previous 80 years and those who were charge of keeping the masses in line as the petro dollar reigned supreme. No one is alive to have to deal with the mess they created and our kids will have to those who truly will suffer. It’s our turn for a piece of the pie, and we’d prefer it without radiation and fallout and nuclear winter those who seem to love war want to unleash. Workers unite!
