I'm Struggling...The Vinyl Records That Are Helping Me Cope

  • In this video, I discuss the music that is helping me cope through a time of change in my life. Moving from Kentucky to Florida along with major home renovations has left me tired, stressed out and very discouraged. The albums I show in this video strike the perfect balance of allowing me to feel normal feelings of sadness while also lifting me up. Music has been a huge help for me during this exhausting time and I wanted to share these incredible records with you.
I also want to lift up the people of Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, and Kentucky during this difficult time due to Hurricane Helene.
Simon & Garfunkel, Getz/Gilberto, Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers, The Beatles, Anne Wilson, Night Ranger, Bill Evans, and more are discussed in this video.

Jazz works for me when I am in a sort of a down mood. Vocals and instrumentals. Music has truly been a blessing and gift my entire life because it has helped me cope with life.

Melinda, I think your video speaks to the way a lot of people are feeling today. These days seem overwhelming to many people because of the hurricane, wars, economic pressure and politics. Sometimes, I look at things and go where is the ray of sunlight? Thank you for sharing your feelings and giving folks a possible path to a little sunshine through music.

To me it is ELO's Out of the Blue, it just lifts my spirits up when I am down, and I don't listen to the lyrics at all, it is always the music that moves me.

I LOVE Out of The Blue! I remember when it came out in 1977 and when I caught wind of a special blue vinyl, DJ only copy, I sought one out and actually FOUND a Near Mint copy on eBay for “a song”. Made my day!

@@marcelogutierrez1537 , good choice. ELO was on a roll from 1975 to 1979. I also love their take on Roll Over Beethoven. You can almost picture little feud between the orchestra conductor and a rock quartet brimming as they switch between Chuck Berry’s classic and Beethoven’s Fifth!

Thank you Melinda, this was a really great video. Just when I was giving up on vinyl videos, you actually made a video with substance. A tiny peek at how you are doing and how music helps you get by (with a little help from your friends). Some of the choices really hit home. Petty Sothern Accents was the LP that was released the year I moved away from home for the first time as a kid. Man, there is a lot of depth on that record and it still sounds fantastic. I remember when I moved from the Midwest to the Pacific Northwest. Seems like after the thrill started to wear off, I got pretty homesick and really struggled for six months or more. Sounds similar to the mood you described. Not really homesick, I just was down. But just like springtime I came back - so chin up little sister. I remember a couple LP's from that rather sad time in my life. They have really stuck with me through the years and have now become like Night Ranger is to you. Neil Young - Freedom and the Traveling Wilburys, Volume 1 hit right in the midst of my sadness. I was also really into the Grateful Dead - In the Dark. To this day when I spin those records I feel stronger.
Funny how music can help change your mood and perspective ... here's to brighter days!

For nearly a year after my mom passed on, there were a couple of records I could not listen to...very emotional at the time, today, these same records bring back joy...in reminding me of the time we enjoyed these selections! My records bring me positivity and upliftment!

I’m reentering vinyl collecting. I’m noticing the creators are so much more positive and supportive than other areas of entertainment interest. I'm a big fan of Carole King and James Taylor Live at the Troubadour. It was recorded in 2007, and it has this feeling of being reunited and hanging out with old friends in just kind of an intimate setting. Gives you all kinda feels. I think you would enjoy it. Hang in there--you *will* get through this! Music has great healing and empowerment capabilities, and it's great that we have music to turn to at various points in our life. It's not like I try to push feelings away, but I always turn to music that is in opposition to my mood when things are at a low point or I am stressed, and it always helps. I hope you can do the same!

No matter how great our life is, we can still get a little down. I’m just thankful that music is something that can lift our spirits in a healthy and positive way. So here’s a few good examples for me. KISS Rock and Roll Over, because it takes me back to when I first got the spark to start collecting music. Another one is Styx Grand Illusion with songs like “Come Sail Away” imagining flying into space for an adventure, or “Man in the Wilderness” reminding me that we can all feel a little lost at times and the title track “Grand Illusion” because it reminds me that the things that society tells us we need isn’t what will always make us happy. Other times I want to be transported back to a time when I got to see a concert and the artist made a live album from that tour. A couple of examples is Pink Floyd Pulse which I seen that tour in Chicago and Van Halen Right here Right now and I seen that tour in St. Louis. Concert have always been my happy place, because I love the interaction and energy shared by the band and the fans. I was able to see a great show last Sunday in St. Louis at Bush Stadium, Sting and Billy Joel. It was supposed to be on Friday night, which was my birthday, but it got moved because of weather. That really lifted my spirits and finally got to see 2 artists that have provided a lifetime of music. I actually found out this week that I won a pair of tickets to see Blue Oyster Cult this Friday and me and my Son are going to that concert. Another band that hadn’t seen yet, so I’m excited. Talking about music with people is also something that lifts my spirits and that’s what makes your channel great. Maybe I should have said having a conversation with someone, since in this case I’m listening. ❤️Night Ranger also for the same reasons, so don’t apologize for liking them. They can give us a nice melodic song to make us feel happy or rocking tune to get our hearts racing, but most of all they contribute to “The Secret of my Success” 🤔😊

Hey Melinda, sorry that you've been a bit down and a bit overwhelmed. I certainly get it. House moves are stressful enough without piling on the additional issues you had with furniture delivery delays and house renovations too. I go back to a time just over 2 years ago, having experienced a house move, a short lived marriage and another necessary house move. I felt like I'd hit a wall emotionally & mentally and actually took time off work to just catch my breath and chill out. I saw my doctor, got some help and that made the difference. Yes there was yet a 3rd FURTHER house move but that allowed me to subsequently settle more and even saw the introduction of my beautiful Cavoodle, Wanda. Yes things aren't totally how I want them, partially due to my own 'lack of motivation' or maybe a shift in priorities. But my life is much better now as you've no doubt noticed. 😊 Those bad times were a fleeting period. I was blessed to have family and friends to help me too. But you tell yourself that it won't always be this way and push through it. Music is personal and it can have therepeutic qualities. Thankfully you've found your 'therapy' through it. Hope things improve for you. Keep up the videos. I finally made another, Beatles related one recently which was enjoyable but personal (I'd welcome your thoughts on it - I need to make more 😊). Love your work as always. Take care. Stay safe. Best wishes to you and yours. 😘❤️

Melinda, I love your Channel. We appreciate much of the same music and your story is similar to mine. I just relocated to northern Utah from DFW. While, it's much more beautiful, less congested, and safe, I am in a bit of mourning. Leaving my home state of 57 years and also losing both parents last year. In regards to your post, I find that instrumental music (smooth jazz/new age) helps me understand where I'm at as well as soothing me. Believe me, I'm a classic rock fan, but something changed this year due to life circumstances. I was in Waco at the hospice when my Mom passed. The next day I went to the half price books clearance store and picked up over 50 cds for $1 or less. I connected with bands such as Spyro Gyra, Larry Carlton, the Rippingtons, etc...Sometimes, there are no lyrics that will help me only sounds which touch me. Wishing you all the best. Thanks for sharing your story. Music Heals the Soul!

I am diabetic, and my doctor has been changing my medications and I was allergic to one and got sicker and my mental health struggled... one record that made me feel better is the new record by Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds. I turned 70 last week and I just cant believe it. I wasn't surprised but I wasn't expecting to be depressed over night. I hate getting old as there is absolutely nothing positive about it. So I listen to merry tunes like "I Cheat the Hangman" by Doobie Brothers and albums like "Secrets of the Beehive" by David Sylvian. "Bookends" is high on my list and has been so since it was first released. Pat Metheny gives me some comfort though. I even took out the Playstation 2 that my son left behind many years ago and started playing Final Fantasy 12. A bit of distracion. Tace care Melinda and try and enjoy music and life.

Thank you for doing this video, Melinda! I think we can all relate in some form or fashion…The one record that has always gotten me through anything is Van Morrison’s “Poetic Champions Compose”…He is at his jazziest and most introspective on this record, especially on songs like “Spanish Steps”, “Celtic Excavation”, “Alan Watts Blues” and the stunningly lovely “Someone Like You”…But his crowning glory achievement is the plaintive “Did Ye Get Healed?”, which gets me deep down in my soul every time! I will also give a shout-out to Marvin Gaye’s “What’s Going On?” and Stevie Wonder’s “Inner Visions”…When I think no one understands how hard people are struggling in the world, I put those on and realize there are others who get the struggles of life, the pain, the fighting, the grief and the trials and tribulations of the world…It makes me more determined than ever to lead with love and keep the faith! Some records are just that way…Jazz also works and I can think of a few by Wes Montgomery, George Benson, Pharoah Sanders, Eddie Henderson, Grant Green, Kenny Burrell, Lou Donaldson, Lonnie Liston Smith, Bob James and Roy Ayers that operate in that same vein…A great video that I’m sure you could do a companion “Part Two” to, if you thought about it…There are SOOO many healing records in the world!

    Good to know you’re safe.
I’m 58, and I was diagnosed with an incurable, genetic illness in 2020. There is no medication either.

Albums I gravitate towards are: Billy Joel- The Stranger, The Best of Bread, Jim Croce - Photographs & Memories. Linda Rondstandt - Heart Like a Wheel. I'm so chuffed you find comfort in your music and it helps to allow your feelings and lift them as well. I think you both have been very brave to do what you have done and make such big changes in your life. Trust that given time things will slot into place. All feelings are relevant to that person at that time. Yes, in life some people have a hard time, but that does not take away how things are making you feel. Melinda, as you I’m sure are aware, moving can be one of the most stressful events in one’s life. And your move was made even worse by the dreadful experience you had with your mover. My advice is slow down, take it one day at a time. If you feel yourself getting hurried or stressed, take a deep breath or two, put on some music and take a break. Hi Melinda. I can't remember if you said you were on the West coast of Florida or the East Coast. If you are on the Southern West coast, please take extra precautions and if you are within 10 miles of the coast, make sure you don't have any electronics or records lower than 24" from the floor. Even when they are in plastic sleeves they still get destroyed from mold and tiny leaks in the plastic covers. This is what we deal with quite often in Florida and nobody ever gets "Used to it". After my wife passed, I couldn't and didn't listen to any music for a very long time. Music has always been the most important hobby/interest/love of my life. To me, music has always been celebratory. Good times! There was nothing to celebrate and hearing sad songs (of which there are many) was the last thing I wanted to hear. When I slowly started listening to music again; 1960's Psych became my therapy music. I'm a "Rocker", but rocking out wasn't going to do it. Psych music doesn't require you to think about the music, nor do you have to concentrate on lyrics. You can just let your mind drift. The Music Channel "Relaxing Vibes" is very therapeutic. I don't know all of your struggles, but you're fortunate to have a TH-cam Channel for emotional support. I'm glad you have all of those support albums, but music also stirs up emotions that isn't always what a person's mind really needs. But, whatever helps your struggles. I've found that life itself is way more important than my life long album collection and all of my beloved songs. Sometimes a person just needs to turn the music off and let the mind rest. Birds chirping is very relaxing and wonderful music! Peace and quite is very underestimated.

Hi, Melinda. Sorry you’ve been feeling down. Personally, I fell into a state of depression after relocating from Las Vegas, where I lived for 37 years, to north Idaho in 2019. You’re right about music and how important that it can be because it helped me a LOT. I found that if I played records that I played when I was a teenager in the late 1970’s, it would almost immediately lift my spirits as I reminisced about happy times as music of our youth just naturally does. In my case, it’s anything by Elvis, The Bee Gees Greatest Hits and some Neil Diamond, especially his 1974 “Serenade” album! Your current feelings will soon pass and you will be uplifted. Enjoy the music!

Nice albums Melinda! I also hope you get to a happier place! I have that Rubber Soul. I do miss “Drive My Car” though. It’s just the way I’ve always known the album as a whole, was with “Drive My Car”. I’m going to have to go with some Elvis Presley albums for that moment. I love his first two, but at the moment I’ve been playing “Elvis’ Great Hits! Vol. 3”. Elvis got some blues, but it doesn’t bring you way down, and many of his songs will make you smile. Give Elvis a chance during this time!

Hey Melinda! The Cure - Pornography (nothing pornographic about it) really cheers me up. The opening line of "100 years" really sets the mood. I AM KIDDING of course! The line in the song is "Does it matter if we all die", pretty much sets the mood for the rest of the lp. On a serious note, ABBA - The Visitors does it for me. Both couples were divorced by the time the LP was released and there are moments on the LP where as the heaviness of that fact were showing through. Only two of the 9 songs were happy songs you would associate with "ABBA" and 1 ominous one that is in no way a typical ABBA song and, they opened the LP with it. Stream it if you get the chance. At least the track "The visitors track" and you may relate to "Slipping Through My Fingers" being a parent. Good Video!

Excellent video. I deeply enjoyed this presentation. Back in the mid 70's living in university residence if I was feeling deeply afflicted, I always put on Desolation Row (Highway 61 Revisited). It seemed to work like a drug. It never failed uplifting me. I can't explain it, but I know it worked. Now I keep some unplayed vocal music from the 20's and 30's in reserve for some future needy occasion (Boswell Sisters, Annette Hanshaw, and Ruth Etting). Best wisher to you.

I would always recommend The Clientele, especially the early stuff like "Suburban Light," "Violet Hour" and "Strange Geometry." It's psychedelic folky indie pop rock that is gorgeous, haunting, poetic and gets a little out there at times. If you like Donovan, Nick Drake, The Zombies, Galaxie 500, The Chills, Fleet Foxes, etc. you might dig them. I find their music very comforting.

I saw a saying on a tee shirt that said I think in the order of "music is what feelings sounds like), theirs music for whatever your needs are! Sometimes I listen to happy stuff when I'm sad sometimes it's dark heavy metal type stuff, it's just what would work for my mind at the time! No telling what that could be, because sometimes the music doesn't match my mood , but it works! Sometimes it's hard to get into any music when im really upset! Sometimes music turns OFF my emotions! Agreed with the compliments. You have a passion and ability to tell stories. I wasn't much of jazz person (still not that big) but when stressed Miles Davis's Blue and a cup of coffee on a Saturday or Sunday morning has been a thing lately. After that maybe some Chicago. Hooverphonic with symphony orchestra is great, the cover of Massive Attack's "Unfinished Sympathy" amazing and powerful. It can take my mind off of whatever is eating me. Not sure if you can get it on vinyl but Memory Dean "Stomp" takes me back to college but relaxing. Gives you that pick me up from simpler times without being fast electric. They were a local band that was signed. Stomp is 90s accoustic for lack of a better description.
