The 1st Armored Division band nicknamed "Old Ironsides" from Wiesbaden, Germany. Music: In the Mood by Joe Garland Arrangement: Glenn Miller Conductor: CW2 James Bettencourt
My grandfather was in the Glenn Millers Orchestra. If MAJ MIller didn't insist on moving the orchestra out of London during the war, I wouldn't be here today. The building the orchestra members were staying in was bombed the next day. Miss you Fred Guerra! xoxo
God that brings back memories .!! Not quite the sound but Glenn Millers army band I would say couldnt be beaten we were shocked when we heard he didnt get to Paris
Outstanding work by our troops, entertaining German citizens with Glenn Miller's ever famous In The Mood and doing it very well, being a great example of the United States for those in the crowd. Proves that soldiers have music on the mind too Greg Miller
I remember the christmas concerts (during the 1980s) of 1st armored division Band in Bad Kreuznach and we had a concert together with our american fellows while I was serving in the german army orchestra in Koblenz.
As Executive Producer & Host of the Veterans TV (show) I am definitely using this footage to sign off each week and the forth coming 11/11/14 Vets Parade either in Houston or Los Angeles. I played in several Marine D&B groups, but since my m.o.s. was as a "grunt", I was only on a t-a-d- status and had to go back and play with my M-16 instead of with my drum. But these kids of the "1st", man they are terreffic. Every morning to get started I tuned in with a cup of coffee to TH-cam to hear this outstanding music and the great Cal Tjader Guajira at the Blackhawk and puts me in a good mood to go work. Greetings to all my brother & sister vets on the blog.
This was recorded in Rhineland-Pfalz (not Wiesbaden, it's in Hessia), although I can not determine which town exactly. When were you deployed to Germany?
@Willysmb44 As well as this song came out, germans werent allowed to listen to this and other kind of jazz music from the free world and now they move they asses to it...this is ironc
A nice version but surprised the band is combat dress not No 1 dress uniform. if this was a British Army band they would be in No 1s. One of the trumpets at end spoiled it as it was overblown
The Army Air Corps was it's own functioning body with its own secretary and commands prior to 1947, the Army just wants credit for the Air Force's achievements prior to 1947.
NOOOO....The Army had its own air forces just like the Navy and Marine Corps did during WWII....it was decided after WWII that the Army was too complex in that configuration and that the air wing could be better served and function better as an independent service.

That is some where near awesome. Love that Glen Miller sound.
70 years + and still toe tapping today....... FANTASTIC.
Never gets old! I love timeless popular music, and Glenn Miller's "In the Mood" is certainly timeless!
This makes me so happy and so sad at the same time.
Rest in peace Captain Miller.
Brought back fond memories. Not only of the great music from Glenn Miller but I was stationed with 5/1 ADA HHB in Wiesbaden from 09/70 to 2/72!!
Absolutely wonderful! Timeless treasure that continues to play on.
This ironic when you consider the first time 1st AD soliders heard this, they were fighting into Germany the hard way! Great job!
Glad they did!
Only the American conductor would jump in the air to sign off the piece. Great work, love this!
What a shame--no one knows how to dance to this marvelous music from Glenn Miller.
Yeah...wonderful thing alcohol.....makes you think you can dance when you can't!
Keith Hinkel alright now let's see you dance ;)
True. What see the ripped jeans and dirty trainers and men with ponytails so no they wont know how to dance
OMG do I ever miss my parents tonight. This is what they loved the most, Big Band sounds.
Brilliant video.
Thank you.
Omg?
Believe its an army band great stuff
Everyone of those fine musicians is also a soldier. God bless them and keep safe.
BRAVOS to the 1st Armored!!! Well done, well done!
Love this! The conductor makes me smile :)
An American military band plays MAJ Miller's "In The Mood" for the Germans. They have taste.
Gregory Kayne Why not cause we germans held the russians back as long as it takes to set the last gi in a plane in ramstein
I love the finale:)) AWESOME-3
Cela fait toujours rêver, quel bonheur des musiques pareilles
Excellent.......
God that brings back memories .!! Not quite the sound but Glenn Millers army band

amazing :*
Great job. Glenn would be proud of you.

1 st Armored Division Band in the Mood = Super good
Toller Bigband-Sound !!
Love it. Shame I never heard you perform. Stationed at Landstuhl and Wiesbaden was one of our outlying clinics and a beautiful city.

Oh yeah! Swingin' with a kick butt tune!
Army's best 1st Inf. Div., thank you.
Amo esta cancion y solo tengo 19 años bien
Music like this won the war.
Это вечная жизнь!
Really Nice=)
My unit supported 1st AD in Iraq in 2004, so my combat patch is Old Ironsides. Never saw their band though.
Great song !!!!
oh boy thats good :)
Nice! I just recently enlisted, hoping to be part this band in the next few years!
I am NOT a dancer but it makes me want to stand up and move, too :)
oooooo, nice I am on mood AMERIKA ...JAN- glenn miller
ok dude!!!
Oh yeah. The Army can do much more than March. These soldiers are amazing musicians. Go Army !
The 1AD Ironsides. My first outfit. Got more education there than any college course.
Looks like a little gingerbread village. Total harmony. What's missing? The Blacks, of course.
Got my fingers snappin' and my toes tappin'!
Ha! Those Americans. Culture and music recognized the world over.
Wonderful. Just wish they had the trombone thing goin' on instead of just the trumpets...
GO ARMOR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Have to hand it to them, they're good, but nothing can beat the original
@Willysmb44 As well as this song came out, germans werent allowed to listen to this and other kind of jazz music from the free world and now they move they asses to it...this is ironc
Very few people looked happy. Perhaps they weren't "In The Mood!!!"
at 2:09, the trumpet player that leans forwards to get his mute is my brother lol
I wonder how many of their mothers and father danced to that during WWII
Zero.....would be great grand parents.
MUST BE AN OLD WAR STORY !
class
Very good on the sax solo note for note, but as a sax player I know they were Martin sax's not Selmer.I must say again Very good job. Jake.
hipcatwho dorisdai
Yeah, they are hard to match for this "original" Big Band sound (saying this as a Selmer guy)
oooooo, nice I am on mood AMERIKA ...JAN
I wonder if these soldiers realize how big a hit this was during WW2
Ain't nobody sittin' still...
@SSGDragonSoldier Haha spotted that too!
I wouldn't exactly describe him as a punk, he looks normal...
below the stage to your left is that a drunk brawl i see? at 0.43
0:42 Happens to the best of em.
You can only see one of the tenor sax players during the tenor "battle". Is the other guy the ghost of Tex Beneke?
Good Ben...............But to the Memory of Glen you cant beat his original
If the US send this unit in first in Normandy, war would have been over much earlier ;)
Why are heads and instruments flying?
Great sound but people needed to turn up!
The Tempo seems a bit fast to me
America at its very best.
Hooah...
Released sept15 1939 - there good but why does Glenn miller have a different pitch and smooth flowing???
Is it me or do the saxophones sound flat?
1:55
I Know How To Dance to In The Mood
Yeah F a n t a s t i c !🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸💖💖💖💖💖💖
Nice job 1st Armored, Trumpet solo needs some work. But overall good.
It was good. Seems a little fast though. (Don't forget NOT TO RUSH!)
I think they should have been wearing WWII era uniforms...that would more appropriate :P
They would´ve been outnumbered slightly wouldn´t they?
Is it just me or is there a certain amount of irony to the choice of music being played for a German audience?
A nice version but surprised the band is combat dress not No 1 dress uniform. if this was a British Army band they would be in No 1s. One of the trumpets at end spoiled it as it was overblown
My uncle Is the one conducting
The Army surely has a better band than marines,HOOOOOAHHH
@jackkelly17 Well..... we defeated you.
Every branch can make fun of the Air Force but the Air Force writes the classiest music.
Miller wrote this tune before enlisting in the Army Air Corps (there was no Air Force until 1947!)
Let us all remember that the Air Force is the overgrowth of the Balloon Corps, Signal branch, of the Union Army from the Civil War.
Better then the rubbish of today's music.
