Just as of today I found your Baldurs Gate EE guide and your channel in general. I dont have any experience with D&D so these vids helped a lot. Learning what happened was very saddening. Rest in peace.
Each character is different and choosing and creating one is a huge part of the game. Fighters are incredibly useful and remember you can always dual or multiclass them into something else. I'd recommend not thinking about it too much cause it'll never end. You wanna try everything and a different class than what you picked always looks better. If you just started, it's still ok to switch but either switch or stay with your current char and that's it! No more changing! Good luck! :)
I do not know why i have watched a video about a game i will never play . But i feel i have to say thank you . You are obviously passionate about this game and i find that kind of cool .
This is exactly what I was looking for BTW! I got the complete collection from the Steam sale just now ... Gonna dig into BG tribology, Planescape Torment and IWS!
Oh awesome! You're in for an incredible treat. Remember that BG is way more into combat and mechanics and planescape is like reading a book. Each game is different in what it does. Enjoy!
Whatever you end up with will be fine. The game has a diverse group of characters that you can pull it off with whatever character you choose to start with. I'm not sure there's much of a difference between the first playthrough to others cause with a full team you'll have to learn everything, but a fighter might make it a bit simpler to keep your main char alive, which is the most important thing. You'll be fine, don't dwell in it too much, just go play! Minsc and Boo are Minsc and Boo!
Early level mages are usually pretty bad, but once you reach spells of the 7th-9th level, they become insane. Fighters late in the game are powerhouses, and the battle of fighter vs mage usually comes down to luck and what special items the figther has, with the mage having the upper hand in most cases. Best thing is to start a fighter and dual into a mage at some point. Best of both worlds! :P
Like I said in the video, Monks start off pretty weak and become really strong later on. The turning point starts when you hit double digits, and since in BG1 you won't be getting there, it might not be the best class to start off with.
on a side note you can pick any portrait you want to, in the original BG if you pick a particular portrait that belongs to a NPC that NPC's portrait will shift to another automatically.
yeah thats a good attitude :) playing the fighter now, might dual class later, and the game is just incredible. already looking forward to all the other infinity engine games i haven't played yet, heh
Yeahhhhh.... I started with a mage (cuz whenever I play rpgs I'm a mage) and became aggravated at how sucky of a mage I am and decided to research how to be a better mage in DnD rules..... Now I'm a fighter lol
One thing missed here is that the allignment choice effects your starting reputation, and therefore the prices you get in shops. Lawfull good gives you the best start and with Chaotic Evil, everyone will hate you.
i would argue the monk never really becomes good unless you are only playing normal difficulty. They just die on the higher tiers especially if using SCS (which I suggest you absolutely do.) I'm revisiting the bg series and this is a good geveral overview although some geveral commentary about thr classes doesn't Really pan out when you play the actual game.
Once I rolled score of 97! :O and of course, I was just trying something so that character I was doing was scraped -.-' I wonder what top roll managed to get any of you? I usually have patience to roll 90, 92... rarely 94... but damn, never saw 97!!!
+kanaziras I used to bang on the reroll (in original BG) until I got something in the high 90s. It could take all day, or just a few minutes. haha I was determined to have those badass stats. ;) I seem to recall having stats of 101 and 103, but I can't remember now if I actually rolled those or if they were added onto my stats by something I found in the game.
Quick question KOKO, is a Monk a tough class for a beginner and someone who is new to the series, this class interests me and i was wondering what you thought?
Try and think of it differently. In terms of role playing and not of mini-maxing your stats. 9-10 in a stat simply means you're normal and you don't even get any minuses. Try to think of every stat in terms of what it means for your character as affecting it's personality, it's pretty fun that way. In any case, you can go through the entire game with 10 in every stat and be perfectly fine. You can spend 2 hours rolling for stats till you get 95+. Just play the game man :).
What? I didn't noticed up until I saw this vid. that the 18/xx was random, and I didn't know 18/xx was a good thing. By the way, you said in this video that the higher /xx in strength the better. But, let's say, I roll an Orc-Warrior and I can raise his/her strength to 19... is that a good or a bad thing? Again, Thanks for the Tutor. vids. Any chance you are going to do more tutor. vids? Perhaps Neverwinter Nights? or the upcoming Pillars of Eternity?
TheCommentGuy8 ---------------------------------- I have no idea why but I can't have line breaks in my comment so it's all jumbled. Sorry...----------------- Of course 19 is better than 18, regardless of the /xx after it. I actually have a full playthrough of Baldur's Gate 2 EE on my channel. In terms of more tutorials, after seeing this one, all the other Infinity Engine games should be MUCH clearer (such as Icewind Dale). Neverwinter is Third Edition D&D which is totally different, but I never had a warm place in my heart for that one. About Pillars, first of all OF COURSE I'll be playing through that one on my channel now that I've finished BG2. Not sure of the format yet but there will be videos you can bet on that.In terms of a tutorial for Pillars, I highly doubt you'll need one as it's a modern game, but we'll see if I feel there's a need.
TheCommentGuy8 You can also find a book that increases your strength when used, just in case you wanted it higher, same goes for wisdom, dex and charisma
just picked the basic fighter. played for a few hours and the game is awesome. but now im thinking the fighter might be bit too simple and boring. should i start over? or is it ok for first playthrough? I've only played planescape torment and fallout 1/2 of the 90s cRPGs
I hate rolling the stats for a paladin, I love the class but in 2nd ADD I hate rolling the stats I nearly always get crappy roles unless I choose to lower intelligence to that of a gnewt, makes for a playable character but it isn't in the spirit of role playing. I want at least a 9 in intel for a paladin and that 18/00 score is a once in a blue moon, in this I prefer 3rd ed's system. as 14 is a great strength and is attainable in the set points for stats.
If your main character has a low charisma, does that determine your entire parties charisma and how others treat you? Or can you use individual members in your party with a high charisma to get better prices etc?
Ehtoqualia Sorry for the late reply your comment was marked as spam for some reason. The character that's talking to the shopkeeper will have a small money lips icon on it's portrait. That char's Charisma is what matters. Anyone can talk to shopkeeps.
Ah okay this must be the older version (or when EE just came out?) I noticed the Shadowdancer class wasn't there and the Ability score total wasn't either which I noticed in other later videos... but I had a question and maybe you or someone can answer (hopefully? :D) Playing an Elf Fighter/Mage/Thief, what is the maximum level? I know you said you need more exp to level, so I'm guessing you can't reach same level as everyone else?
This is the first game, so it's fairly old. I'm playing through the second one right now, so a lot is very different there (you can check out videos on the channel). I don't know exactly how much exp, but remember the exp Cap. For a standard character it's around level 7-8, so a dual class would reach 6-7. A tri-class should reach ~5, which is really really low. The only way this would make sense is if you want to continue with this char into BG2, which is totally fine.
They are. Getting to 18 means you get more HP, especially for warrior classes. In addition you get more saving throws. If you pass 20 you also regenerate HP slowly.
I am having an extremely hard time getting a character I want to keep. They are all great, but i start one such as a Half-Orc Berserker, get a great roll, et to the first town having a great time.... then worry i may not have enough options to keep the flavor up throughout the game. Same with the Rangers, and I thought about a thief but i have heard there are plenty good ones. Then iI really like Mages but This is my first time through the game and I am worried it will be too much to take in. Any suggestions? I have made a ton and played with them in the Black Pits but im just ready to play the Damn game ad i cant commit to anything without some input... I don't know why butit is driving me mad! Closest game i have played would be DragonAge Origins i suppose but it is a whole different world IMO.
It's not easy and one of the reasons people have trouble actually finishing the game. The truth of the matter is that anything can work. There are just so many options and approaches to the game and you can make most anything work. The important thing it to have fun and not worry about having the 'perfect' character or party. Since you're unfamiliar with the game, as you play more you understand it better and so want to go back and make a better character that suits your new understanding of the systems and mechanics. There's so much to discover that you're in a constant loop of remaking characters. You have to make yourself break that cycle. You should just pick something that makes sense to you and run with it as far as you can without thinking about it too much. Seeing more content and playing more of the game is more fun than getting a better character. Once you finish everything you can always make a new char and play again, but you have to finish the game at least once. It's a mind switch. There are times where you struggle through a section and want to start over. If you manage to push through that you'll be perfectly fine. Good luck!
KOKOStern Thanks much. I believe I am going to run a Fighter/Thief. I am just trying to enjoy the story like you said at least once. for the time being I only have it on a tablet but I'll be able to enjoy this all a bit more in a few months when I get a PC again. Thanks for answering. It means a lot man.
simonstrane Planescape is a rare game. As an example you can actually beat the entire game with very very minimal (if at all) fighting. BG2 is a more complete experience.
+KOKOStern Hey, it made sense back then. Basically it just indicates a lower and lower chance for enemies to be able to hit you as your AC improved. Hence the lower numbers. I cut my gaming teeth on 2nd ed plus Unearthed Arcana rules. I could calculate THACO on the fly. I sorta missed that when 3rd ed came out. :D
+me1970 This "explanation" doesn't do anything to explain the logic behind it. You could have just as easily changed the last sentence to "...therefore you AC went up, making it more difficult to hit on a d20" and it would have made more logical sense.

I've played this game from 1999 but I feel that only now I understand it. Thanks, KOKO! You got yourself a new sub.=)
Glad to help! :)
Thank you very much for your time and the great explanations about the game.

Thiefs are super fun to play and can be very powerful especially late in BG2 but also weak in some situations.
thats great thanks!
