    Great job. Was nice to see the gate briefly. So many avoid it. I'm looking to make a gate.

    I think the fence is nice and a work of art the way you built it, good work.

    In Newfoundland it's called a riggle/wriggle fence (not a wattle fence), a traditional building technique.

  • @barmpity
    @barmpity 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Great little fence! The wattle style looks great and is a fantastic visual break.
    If the stringers shrink enough to loosen up over the summer I'll bet you can bodge them back together with a bit of haywire, and if you end up with a larger garden and different fence down the road these would be fantastic panels for trellising plants like beans, peas and tomatoes. I'm sure they'll last until you're sick of them!

    • @Simplegroundlife
      @Simplegroundlife  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks for your input, I like the way it turned out too. I tried to account for shrinkage but I bet you are right about it. I will have to have the fix ready when needed. I like the idea about using the sections for trellising. The thing I like about this fence is that it can become just about anything next (and I don't have to pull a million nails).

    I loved that expression you used “It matches the color of my heart.” I’ve never heard anyone else say that. Is the style of fence your own creation? (Also never seen that done before.)

    • @Simplegroundlife
      @Simplegroundlife  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm glad I left it in the video. It is true though. No I didn't create the idea completely. From the little research that I did, it seems that a few cultures used something similar to this fence. A big part of the inspiration for this fence actually came from Pinterest though.

    5 weeks ago I dug a ft deep by 21/2 ft wide 30 ft. long for potatoes, 3 days later they had almost filled it in. Temp fence up now, but thanks for your ideas.

    Very ingenious use of what you have! Thank you! Stay safe also! Anymore thought on compost on the interior of your mushroom logs?

    • @Simplegroundlife
      @Simplegroundlife  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you! Yeah I am wondering about packing one tower with compost and re-stacking the other one closer to the ground as an experiment. But honestly it is only a partial thought and it may change still. We have just had a couple good inches of rain and we should have some good warm days, I want to see if that makes a difference too. Now that the garden fence is up I can maybe spend a little time on the mushroom logs.

    I noticed this is two years old. I absolutely love the fence and gate. Is it still there? How's the gate working?

    • @Simplegroundlife
      @Simplegroundlife  ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm slow getting to this. Things rot away really quickly out here so I am noticing the first signs of the posts getting loose. A couple of my posts are growing some beautiful turkey tail mushrooms. I will probably count this as its last year and plan on replacing it next year. The gate is still working though I have had to fix it a couple times from bumping it with a wheel barrow and from having it settle a little. I have really like this fence overall.

    How did you do your fence posts? Did you dig or just pond them in? Did you use rocks or concrete on the fence posts???

  • @terigoodwin7531

    If you char the parts that touch the ground they will last longer.

    • @Simplegroundlife

    Hello. I have a question that has to do with a past video... I live in Satsop and am building a cabin in Quinault. I am planning on using an old cookstove I have but planning to buy a new one... more efficient and bigger firebox. I saw that you had a LaNordica. How is that working for you? Is the firebox sufficient size? I will be using lots of alder, including the limbs plus fir, spruce, and hemlock. Does the oven work well? Can you bank up the fire to last most of the night? Thanks for all your great videos. Sandy B

    • @Simplegroundlife
      @Simplegroundlife  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi, so yeah we like our stove so far. It does take some cleaning when the wood is still a little green and damp. The dryer wood burns faster so it cuts down on burn time. All that being said, it has kept us warm during the winters here and I do like the oven. It seems to cook like a good wood stove. The heat goes all the way around the oven box but it is definitely hotter on the top than the bottom.
      All in all I would say that it would be worth seeing what is available locally if you can, I don't have any other recommendations per say but it took a lot of shipping and money to get this stove here to find that it is only slightly above average. I hope this helps a little

      Simple Ground thanks so much for your reply. I did find a place that the shipping is included in the price and the price is lower than others I was looking at. I’ve enjoyed your videos. Keep up the good work!

    (I'm catching up. It's been crazy on my end.)
    The slats will last way longer if they aren't touch the soil. This being said, I'm more concerned by the bark left on the branches. They attract bugs and might degrade the fence faster than the rot.
    Keep up your excellent work!

    Sorry your fence has a 12 month lifespan. Alder posts are the worst possible. You could have charred the ends to extend their life but any other species is better. Looks nice though.

    • @Simplegroundlife
      @Simplegroundlife  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You may have caught it in the video, but I don't expect the fence to last much longer than that. It is part of the reason I opted for a simple and inexpensive fence. Hopefully I can expand the garden in the next year or so and come up with a more permanent solution that fits the new size and shape. At that point this current fence can become wood chips or something else. I considered the idea of charring the ends of the posts but I didn't want to take the extra time and effort when I know I don't intend to let it stand for long.
