    "Lots of other gardeners will sow these seeds quite liberally and then thin out any of the weaker seedlings as they emerge. But I find this a real waste of seed".
    THANK YOU! I cringe every time I see people do that in their videos.

    I didn't even realize that carrots could be grown in containers. We usually plant them in rows between other beneficial vegetables.
    Last year I was a little bit too lazy and forgot to thin out those rows. The carrots turned out to be all kinds of shapes and sizes, but there were so many that in the end we had a surplus of 7kg (15lbs).
    So now I have a fridge filled with carrot soup.
    This year I'm gonna plant them in rows again (need the containers for broccoli and cauliflower), but with selfmade seed tapes and see how that turns out.

    I love your positive spirit. Thanks for all the great information. I am a novice gardener and still experimenting but I managed to get a fairly good harvest last year from my container garden. I was getting some great cucumbers and courgettes from my plants until they contracted powdery mildew and then everything went downhill. I got great tomatoes but after some time they started turning black before they ripened. any ideas on this? I have only just sown my seeds for this year so I am waiting for results. Keep up the great work.

    I want to try to grow carrots as I love carrot! So when you uploaded this I was so happy! It will be really helpful, thank you! Also, I love your gardening video more than other channel! Don't know why but yours is really relaxing to watch for me! But before I grow carrots from seed, I want to try an experiment if I can get seeds from carrot tops, then plant those seeds. If that's a fail, maybe I just buy seeds online then haha

      Project Diaries what if you use more then the top of the carrot like half a cartoon or the whole carrot, I mean they shouldnt be harmed by being in the fridge as the carrot are growing the root he first year and then flowers the next at least thats how they do it where I live Anyway the more of the carrot you use for this experiment the more likely you are gonna get flowers and buds I think.

    • @judeirwin2222
      @judeirwin2222 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      This is actually an ancient way of saving all root veg, including spuds. It's a small version of the "clamp", which usually inter-layered veg and sand, with a final cap of sand and then straw. In a cellar, traditionally, there would always be a "root cellar" section, right up to the early 1900s. Why have we forgotten these basics?

    Those algae in those rainwater bottle are really helping on the water for higher growing success as u irrigate to those plants. The reasons are possibly cleaning the water, providing oxygen and organic nutrients to the water.

    • @judeirwin2222
      @judeirwin2222 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Eh? I can't quite make out what you are saying. Algae grow, then die, and bacteria appear to break down the dead algae; this uses up oxygen, contrary to your idea that it produces more oxygen. The green algae in the bottle are not a good idea, and it makes the bottle sludgy and messy, too.

    I made the mistake of buying this compost this year. It hasn't improved since this video was posted! Let me say it is ESSENTIAL to finely sieve, especially if you are growing root crops. The amount of plastic, both shards, pieces and vinyl is awful! I also found narrow plastic coated wire and like the gardener, large pieces of uncomposted wood and bark. There were also fine strands of a material I can only compare to cats whiskers! I've no idea what they were! I'm sure it's fine for flowers and non root crops, but downright dangerous for roots! I also used it to start off flower seedlings indoors but had to throw the lot due to the prolific growth of mushroom type fungi. I tried to post a review on the website but gave up after the 4th attempt as they were all refused due to "violations of terms!" So if you are considering purchasing the 100L bag from the UK's biggest DIY store, be careful!

    You can grow anything in a container. The problem is, they plants compete with each other - it's the way of nature. So the more you crowd, the less each plant grows. I've grown carrots nicely separated in rows, and with seeds sprinkled over a six inch wide low mound row. The crowded 'sprinkled' seeds grew, but gave small, sometimes gnarly roots. the seeds separated by about 2 inches all grew to full size. How may carrots can you grow with 2 inches of space per pot? Plus, containers mean more watering.

    I know you showed what they were at 9 weeks, and talked about another few weeks, but do you remember how long you allowed them to grow? The variety i have said around 75 days, so around 11 weeks, but dont seem quite ready yet.

    Just a couple of things on this video:
    - The seeds were buried under about half inch of compost you dumped in on top of them. Carrots do best if they are very near the soil surface with a light sprinkling of compost or sand.
    - You then watered the soil surface liberally, washing the seeds even deeper in the compost, whch you left loose. It would have been better to tamp the compost down lightly with a flat hand all round, water the compost liberally and wait for the surface to settle smotthing out the surface again if not flat, sprinkle the seeds onto the wet compost, then sprinkle on a very light surface of sieved compost just to cover the seeds and not smother them.
    They will be up in 7 - 14 days.

    This was great to watch! I had no success growing carrots in my soil as its far too clay like and dense but gonna give this bucket method a shot! Any advice on compost /potting mix turning mouldy in the containers?

      Have you thought about joining my gardening group? facebook.com/groups/projectdiariesHQ/
      What do you mean mouldy? If it's just the top it's usually down to over watering and bad airflow

    • @Thewibareports
      @Thewibareports 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The top often gets fuzzy mould even on smaller plants with few leaves and decent air flow maybe the brand of mix? Also I would but don't have face book 👍

    I have gophers, squirrels and rabbits where I live (Southern California USA). They eat everything so can't plant in the ground. Thus container and raised beds are the best way to go but they can climb! I don't want to put out poison, wild life and pets abound and don't want to inadvertantly poison them or their food source. Any recommendations or ideas?

    Its so funny my dad made me a garden sieve to get the rocks out of my mud pie. I was so mad my brother didn't want to eat it. LoL... he ran and said I'm not eating dirt. I ran behind him and was say but it has grapes. I'm trying to look for veggies i can grow in my apartment. My living room is dark, my kitchen have sun light half of the day, My room have a lot of light but it's always 66 degrees. My husband like it cold. any help is welcome. I was only good at growing my roses when i had a yard and idk the name of the plant everyone has that can grow like a vine. Sometimes green and white or green and yellow color. unfortunate I only know what kind of soil i need by touching it. It was the way i was taught i can't tell by eye and at the moment IDK how to read and tell the different. Damn... old timers with there touch and see ...feel and the differences. Most use a measuring cup to cook with I use it to count calories. Two years back it the first time i used a measuring cup. I learned to cook by eye, smell, and tasted. Now that i'm eating healthier I want to grow a lot. I love a lot of life in my house.

    Why not water the compost thoroughly before planting the seeds and topping up with more compost? That way you KNOW you've saturated the compost because it will be draining out of the drainage holes. The way you do it means it's likely to wet some areas but not others and/or wash the seeds out of their correct positions. I still say two seeds per hole is best, then thin the weaker ones. Seed is very cheap, and this wastes little, but also it produces more reliable results.

    @kennethstensrud669 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    For more drainage you could drill some holes on the side of the bucket, about 3 cms up. Another thing is that you should not save seeds of carrots, and other umbellifers like parsnips, that bolt to seed first year. That treat might carry on till all are annuals and go to seed instead of producing roots.

    Hi there. If you are wanting to collect carrot seed, maybe grow one bucket and leave it there until next season and let the carrots regrow and flower, then collect your seed. It takes two seasons to collect carrot seed. Hope this is some help. Happy growing 😄

    You can grow another carrot from just the carrot top. I've done it, it was the ugliest Frankenstein carrot I've ever seen but it is still possible.

    Carrots tend to fork out if there are too many nutrients in the soil.
    The root will go towards the nutrients, simple as that.
    A slightly nutrient deficient medium is best for root crops such as carrots or parsnips, as the root with go straight down searching for the nutrients.
    Many gold star competition carrot growers, actually just use drums of sand, with a hole poked in, using some plastic piping, just to keep the carrots straight.

    If you seed carelessly, you can harvest to thin with they are about 6" high. Then you'll have a secondary harvest with no seed waste
