I respect and love your work as always but how can you talk about Afro-Trinidadians without talking about the largest Ethnic group? Indians ! , if they are the second largest who is the first? Yes, I understand the emphasis is on Afro-Trinidadians but the East Indian influence is so pervasive that many Afro-Trinidadians are also of East Indian descent. Only Trinidad and Guyana have almost a 50/50 split between Indians and Africans, this has also been reflected in political divisions and mainstream Trini culture also consumed by Afro-Trinis. All other English-speaking Caribbean countries have an African majority except for Guyana and Trinidad so that is worth noting about Trinidad as a distinct point.

I love Trini food and Calypso music! I had no idea Calypso music originated in Trinidad. People from this island are so nice too. Did anyone know there were a group of African Americans (called Merkins) who went to Trinidad after the war of 1812. Enslaved people were promised their freedom after volunteering in this war. Their descendants are still there and are recognized as African Americans or Merikans. Most people only know about Caribbean immigration to the States and else where but not the other way around. I’m African American and I love learning about the history of African peoples in the world. ❤️🇹🇹❤️🇹🇹

A majority segment of Guyana's Black population hail from Akan/Ashanti people of Modern day Ghana. There was a Slave rebellion among African Guyanese slaves in 1800's, led by a Slave by the name of KOFI, i am not sure hos full details, but he was descended from Ghana.

From my personal observation and experience I find the most similarities culturally between Guyana and Trinidad. We share so much I common from food to you name it. We are no doubt practically the same peoples. I say this as a Trini.
Love the video. Dr. Eric Williams, our first Prime Minister as an independent nation once wrote a book called The History of Trinidad and Tobago, there are a lot of details in there that will explain our culture and who we are as a people. We've got a lot of history in the Caribbean starting with Haiti, but once you start going through it, you can't help but appreciate all that we brought with us through slavery.

There is video of him and the black panther talking on him leading, but he refused as he did not want to and as I see it he was not a born America, I will not say something I do not know. Great video as usual, one omission though, Many of the French speaking settlers in Trinidad were emigres who fled Haiti (then St. Dominque) during the Haitian Revolution of 1791-1804. These Emigres also brought French speaking enslaved Africans with them. Keep up the excellent content.
They brought Creole-speaking enslaved Africans with them not just from Haiti but also Martinique, Saint Lucia and other islands.Much of the afr-Trinidadian population has roots in other islands.
Including Martinique, Guadeloupe and other French territories at the time. It was called The Cedula of Population. The spark that was the catalyst for our French and West African Carnival .... And the rest is history. 😂

Asia, for example, was once just the eastern shore of the Aegean region, where from a certain point of view, the sun went down, or what we call today Turkey. Caucasian derives from an old word for mountain. India is based on the name of a valley. Africa is the feminine of a Greco-Roman trade wind deity. These are not the names of bloodlines. You cannot descend from an anemoi, or a mountain, or a valley, or a coast. You can only descend from your father. Now, we have a record of the genealogies of the sons of Noah. Shem, and Ham and Japheth, were their names. From these came many tribes and descendants. Later on, newcomers entered, roaming about, and displaced these original tribes, in some cases assuming their identities, in others adopting labels they gave to what they found--hence we have names of continents, based upon nothing but descriptions of places. No such thing as African descent can exist. Call the people Hamites, Kushites, Semites, Israelites instead. From those bloodlines they descend.

Hey brother, thank you for the surprised video. What I remember back then, was that the population of Trinidad and Tobago 50.xx Africans, 49.xx Indians and the rest would be from Syria etc. It is considered a cosmopolitan society. Tobago is a more of a tourist attraction and our dialects are different. I am from Trinidad but I have family in Tobago as well and I have lived in both places. Now I reside in the US and learning more and more of my ancestors' history.
A section of the Afro Trinidadians came as freed men as a result of fighting for the British in the American war of 1812. They were American Marines. These persons are known as Merikins. Many of them were settled in the Company villages found in Moruga...some of which still exist. There are many descendents of these men.
Also a company ended up around Williamsville but they didn’t like the area they got and called it a hard bargain hence theres a village there called “Hardbargain”
The indigenous name for the island was Ka-iri or I-ere. The title Trinidad originated with Christopher Columbus who named it after the Holy Trinity when he encountered the territory in July 1498.
Iere was the name given to this land by the Natives which means "The Land of The Hummingbird". So beautiful. The three hills that Columbus saw upon approaching the land is what inspired him to use the Trinity as part of its name.
Great video as usual. Didn't major in history but remember being taught in high school that the native tribes didn't call themselves "Carib" and "Arawak"; those were European names. The tribes may have been called Kalinago and Taíno.
Carib and Arawak were what we learnt in school in the 80s and 90s. Those students in school in the 2000s and presently would have learnt the more correct terms of Kalinago and Taino.
Thanks for telling our story. It should also be known that some of us are decendants of the United States. We migrated during the war of 1812 for freedom to the Moruga hills. Moreover, some of us were here before Columbus and were instrumental in helping navigate to the Americas. Our ancestors had tales of arriving first before any inhabitants. We also lived in the interior of the Amazon from a tribe called the buticudo as an admixture of nations. We are also decendants of the archipelago Islands like the Eastern Islands. Most recently we came from Grenada, The Grenadines, Barbados, St. Lucia, and Nigeria during the oil boom of WW2. Trinidad and Tobago's African population is very diverse. Also Trinidad and Tobago should be considered as one nation, one people. Two Islands one country

Thank u for mentioning this, I've heard about this before, my family on my mom side are from 5th company, and she told me most of the families in that area are related, I've heard that the Americans that migrated to that specific area were mostly soldiers, hence the name companies. Bro none of us Afro trinis are indigenous to Trinidad or Tobago. The original inhabitants are still here. The Kalinago people. That's where the name Carib or Caribbean comes from. We're directly from Africa during the transatlantic slave trade.
I am Afro Trinidadian. My Mother’s Great Grandfather is one of the Steuart’s exiled from Scotland. He and his wife took their children to Trinidad where they became successful and even brought the tradition and teachings of the Masons. My Father’s Mother is descended from Black/Original Hebrew people, like the Steuart’s, but from France. She married a Carib/Amerindian/ Native tribal King. Carib’s are a fierce tribe that used cannibalism to intimidate their enemies and the region is named for them. The native tribes are also of darker complexion but their original African nation is unknown since they migrated much earlier. Free Black people have been a part of Trinidadian history even during slavery, which ended fairly quickly. Through the aid of the Creole tongue, we communicated with Haiti and Jamaica and brought about the abolition of slavery in the Caribbean. Haiti first then us, Jamaica and all the rest. The History is deep.

Fellow trini here🇹🇹 the challenge in attributing it’s history with the current African population is the fact that there has been so much migration from Bajans, Grenadians St Vincentian and many others.. even Tobago. If you talk to any trini, some grand parent or great grand parent is from somewhere else at least.
True but the foundation for the African population originally came from the nearby French controlled Islands which includes Grenada and St Vincent, Martnique, Dominica etc. Cedula of Population 1783. Barbadians came once Trinidad became a British Colony and there have been more recent migrations from St Vincent and Grenada and to a lesser extent St Lucia in more recent history.

Thank you for this presentation. My mother is from Trinidad and my father was from Louisiana which to me has some cultural/colonial similarities to Trinidad and Tobago. I once saw my former Nigerian co-workers bring their lunch to work which was a type of stew. I described/spoke to them about Jambalaya, gumbo, and callalo. They were quick to take ownership and say that it is all West African derived and I smiled in affirmation. On another note, I could be wrong and native Trinidadians can correct me but it’s my understanding and of visiting Tobago that a larger percentage of the population of Tobago are of pure African descent.

The people make it here are those migrated from Africa or locals who want reconnect with the mother land. *I stand corrected we have pound plantain which is similar to fufu. They have been making fufu in trinidad bro, especially amongst the old folks which is called pound plantains, and it’s made in a morta pestle. they don’t actually call it fufu, but it’s the same concept, and is more common amongst rural country folks. Bless up.

Our version of fufu is coocoo and pounded plantain called TomTom. All the creole dishes have African origins for example Accra/Akara is from Nigeria. We make our Accra with salt fish and Nigeria makes theirs with beans. Sorrel drink is also from Africa. Our callalloo is drived from Nigeria okro soup

Famous for R&B hits like Caribbean Queen, Suddenly and There’ll Be Sad Songs in n the 1980’s and 90’s. Still acclaimed to be one of the greatest vocalists in R&B.

You also have CLR James author of Black Jacobins, and George Padmore, Claudia Jones ... You also have Africans who were brought to Trinidad as indenture servants after slavery was abolished. Like pelau(which I discovered is also served in South Carolina) you have other foods of African origin like akra (Fish cake). You also have other African words like dada (Yoruba) which is locked or twisted hair.

I think it's so interesting how most of not all the countries in Latin America and the Caribbean that have a strong population of Afro people have these carnivals each year. Brazil, Jamaica, Trinidad, Haiti, DR, PR, Bahamas etc, even the creoles in New-Orleans in the US... we don't really have those in Africa, or at least not in that same way. But you can still tell the African influences in music, dance, food and anything cultural

A majority segment of Guyana's Black population hail from Akan/Ashanti people of Modern day Ghana. There was a Slave rebellion among African Guyanese slaves in 1800's, led by a Slave by the name of KOFI, i am not sure hos full details, but he was descended from Ghana.

Not really sure how afro somehow became to mean african . When that clearly was a Foundational Black Americans aka Indians of North America. You have to really be careful when you consume information from someone who is a pan african. They will label anything that looks like us as an african or slap a fake african history on them.

From my personal observation and experience I find the most similarities culturally between Guyana and Trinidad. We share so much I common from food to you name it. We are no doubt practically the same peoples. I say this as a Trini.
Love the video. Dr. Eric Williams, our first Prime Minister as an independent nation once wrote a book called The History of Trinidad and Tobago, there are a lot of details in there that will explain our culture and who we are as a people. We've got a lot of history in the Caribbean starting with Haiti, but once you start going through it, you can't help but appreciate all that we brought with us through slavery.

Great video as usual, one omission though, Many of the French speaking settlers in Trinidad were emigres who fled Haiti (then St. Dominque) during the Haitian Revolution of 1791-1804. These Emigres also brought French speaking enslaved Africans with them.

They brought Creole-speaking enslaved Africans with them not just from Haiti but also Martinique, Saint Lucia and other islands.Much of the afr-Trinidadian population has roots in other islands.
Brought them from Grenada as well.
They were from Martinique, Guadeloupe, Grenada, Dominica, St Lucia and Haiti.
Including Martinique, Guadeloupe and other French territories at the time. It was called The Cedula of Population. The spark that was the catalyst for our French and West African Carnival .... And the rest is history. 😂

Asia, for example, was once just the eastern shore of the Aegean region, where from a certain point of view, the sun went down, or what we call today Turkey. Caucasian derives from an old word for mountain. India is based on the name of a valley. Africa is the feminine of a Greco-Roman trade wind deity. These are not the names of bloodlines. You cannot descend from an anemoi, or a mountain, or a valley, or a coast. You can only descend from your father. Now, we have a record of the genealogies of the sons of Noah. Shem, and Ham and Japheth, were their names. From these came many tribes and descendants. Later on, newcomers entered, roaming about, and displaced these original tribes, in some cases assuming their identities, in others adopting labels they gave to what they found--hence we have names of continents, based upon nothing but descriptions of places.
No such thing as African descent can exist.
Call the people Hamites, Kushites, Semites, Israelites instead. From those bloodlines they descend.

Hey brother, thank you for the surprised video. What I remember back then, was that the population of Trinidad and Tobago 50.xx Africans, 49.xx Indians and the rest would be from Syria etc. It is considered a cosmopolitan society. Tobago is a more of a tourist attraction and our dialects are different. I am from Trinidad but I have family in Tobago as well and I have lived in both places. Now I reside in the US and learning more and more of my ancestors' history.
A section of the Afro Trinidadians came as freed men as a result of fighting for the British in the American war of 1812. They were American Marines. These persons are known as Merikins. Many of them were settled in the Company villages found in Moruga...some of which still exist. There are many descendents of these men.
Lived in Moruga for many years and never knew that. Wow

Also a company ended up around Williamsville but they didn’t like the area they got and called it a hard bargain hence theres a village there called “Hardbargain”
The indigenous name for the island was Ka-iri or I-ere. The title Trinidad originated with Christopher Columbus who named it after the Holy Trinity when he encountered the territory in July 1498.
Iere was the name given to this land by the Natives which means "The Land of The Hummingbird".
So beautiful.
The three hills that Columbus saw upon approaching the land is what inspired him to use the Trinity as part of its name.

Didn't major in history but remember being taught in high school that the native tribes didn't call themselves "Carib" and "Arawak"; those were European names. The tribes may have been called Kalinago and Taíno.
Carib and Arawak were what we learnt in school in the 80s and 90s. Those students in school in the 2000s and presently would have learnt the more correct terms of Kalinago and Taino.
I learnt both. Born in 89. So by high-school we learnt Taino and Kalinagos
Way back in 1956 we were taught in school about the Caribs and Arawaks and Christopher Columbus. Much later on I found out their true names .

Thanks for telling our story. It should also be known that some of us are decendants of the United States. We migrated during the war of 1812 for freedom to the Moruga hills. Moreover, some of us were here before Columbus and were instrumental in helping navigate to the Americas. Our ancestors had tales of arriving first before any inhabitants. We also lived in the interior of the Amazon from a tribe called the buticudo as an admixture of nations. We are also decendants of the archipelago Islands like the Eastern Islands. Most recently we came from Grenada, The Grenadines, Barbados, St. Lucia, and Nigeria during the oil boom of WW2. Trinidad and Tobago's African population is very diverse. Also Trinidad and Tobago should be considered as one nation, one people. Two Islands one country

Thank u for mentioning this, I've heard about this before, my family on my mom side are from 5th company, and she told me most of the families in that area are related, I've heard that the Americans that migrated to that specific area were mostly soldiers, hence the name companies. Bro none of us Afro trinis are indigenous to Trinidad or Tobago. The original inhabitants are still here. The Kalinago people. That's where the name Carib or Caribbean comes from. We're directly from Africa during the transatlantic slave trade.

I am Afro Trinidadian. My Mother’s Great Grandfather is one of the Steuart’s exiled from Scotland. He and his wife took their children to Trinidad where they became successful and even brought the tradition and teachings of the Masons. My Father’s Mother is descended from Black/Original Hebrew people, like the Steuart’s, but from France. She married a Carib/Amerindian/ Native tribal King. Carib’s are a fierce tribe that used cannibalism to intimidate their enemies and the region is named for them. The native tribes are also of darker complexion but their original African nation is unknown since they migrated much earlier. Free Black people have been a part of Trinidadian history even during slavery, which ended fairly quickly. Through the aid of the Creole tongue, we communicated with Haiti and Jamaica and brought about the abolition of slavery in the Caribbean. Haiti first then us, Jamaica and all the rest. The History is deep.

Fellow trini here🇹🇹 the challenge in attributing it’s history with the current African population is the fact that there has been so much migration from Bajans, Grenadians St Vincentian and many others.. even Tobago. If you talk to any trini, some grand parent or great grand parent is from somewhere else at least.
That's true. My father's parents are from Grenada. My mom's dad was originally from Martinique.
True but the foundation for the African population originally came from the nearby French controlled Islands which includes Grenada and St Vincent, Martnique, Dominica etc. Cedula of Population 1783. Barbadians came once Trinidad became a British Colony and there have been more recent migrations from St Vincent and Grenada and to a lesser extent St Lucia in more recent history.

Thank you for this presentation. My mother is from Trinidad and my father was from Louisiana which to me has some cultural/colonial similarities to Trinidad and Tobago. I once saw my former Nigerian co-workers bring their lunch to work which was a type of stew. I described/spoke to them about Jambalaya, gumbo, and callalo. They were quick to take ownership and say that it is all West African derived and I smiled in affirmation. On another note, I could be wrong and native Trinidadians can correct me but it’s my understanding and of visiting Tobago that a larger percentage of the population of Tobago are of pure African descent.
yes Tobago is pretty much all Aftican decent. It's alot less busy there. If I move back I'd actually prefer Tobago although I love both.

One correction: Fufu is not an Afro-Trinidadian dish. The people make it here are those migrated from Africa or locals who want reconnect with the mother land.

They have been making fufu in trinidad bro, especially amongst the old folks which is called pound plantains, and it’s made in a morta pestle. they don’t actually call it fufu, but it’s the same concept, and is more common amongst rural country folks. Bless up.

Our version of fufu is coocoo and pounded plantain called TomTom. All the creole dishes have African origins for example Accra/Akara is from Nigeria. We make our Accra with salt fish and Nigeria makes theirs with beans. Sorrel drink is also from Africa. Our callalloo is drived from Nigeria okro soup

Caribbean people are proud that Grammy Artist Billy Ocean came out of Trinidad. Famous for R&B hits like Caribbean Queen, Suddenly and There’ll Be Sad Songs in n the 1980’s and 90’s. Still acclaimed to be one of the greatest vocalists in R&B.

The tribes brought to trinibago are mainly Hausa,Igbos and Yoruba from Nigeria.
You also have CLR James author of Black Jacobins, and George Padmore, Claudia Jones ... You also have Africans who were brought to Trinidad as indenture servants after slavery was abolished. Like pelau(which I discovered is also served in South Carolina) you have other foods of African origin like akra (Fish cake). You also have other African words like dada (Yoruba) which is locked or twisted hair.

Our african history from Africa to slavery to emancipation is told in stories and songs..many of our coustoms can be traced directly back to africa..Tobago unlike Trinidad didnt have a diverse mixture..we were for years AFRICAN. I think it's so interesting how most of not all the countries in Latin America and the Caribbean that have a strong population of Afro people have these carnivals each year. Brazil, Jamaica, Trinidad, Haiti, DR, PR, Bahamas etc, even the creoles in New-Orleans in the US... we don't really have those in Africa, or at least not in that same way. But you can still tell the African influences in music, dance, food and anything cultural
West Africans have festival where they celebrate their ancestors and spirits.
