The 7th Street/Metro Center station opened in 1991 as a Blue Line (now A Line) only station, making it the very first underground station throughout the LA Metro Rail system. Two years later, the Red Line subway (now B Line) opened, making it the first LA Metro Rail station with a transfer point. Today, the station's light rail platform is now served by not only the Blue Line, but also the Expo Line (now E Line, currently using aqua color) since 2012. Also, the station's subway platform is not only served by the Red Line, but also the Purple Line (now D Line) since 2006. Yet, the station's illuminated name signs still show blue bullet dots only on light rail platform and red bullet dots only on subway platform. Pretty soon, the Blue (A) and Expo (E) lines will be extended north from 7th Street/Metro Center station as the Regional Connector project is coming underway. The new A Line (Blue Line) will run from Long Beach to Azusa while the new E Line (Expo Line with gold color) will run from Santa Monica to East Los Angeles.
