He was the first guy to die after having been a star in a reasonbly priced car on Top Gear (2002-). He was on in season 01 and passed away in 2005 iirc.
Personally I always thought Giles Brandreth would have been a natural successor to Richard Whiteley. In my opinion nobody else had really suited the role since 2005.

Now I am sorry that he is leaving, especially because he is being replaced by Anne Robinson, there will be no banter between Rachel and Anne, so I will not watch it any more. Shame because I have watched it from the very start.
This is the first time I have seen this since it's original airing. Not only is it a classic Gotcha but it shows, not that proof was needed, what a brilliant presenter Richard was, when all we have today are fakes. He was genuine, interesting & interested, talented, natural & funny just as he was in "real" life. I remember my utter shock at hearing the news of Richard's passing and not believing it and family, friends & colleagues saying what you saw with Richard was what you got. Not only a great presenter, Richard was of course mayor of Wetwang in the East Riding of Yorkshire. R.I.P Richard, for the short time we had you, you made a huge impact.
It’s a sad reflection on an era we’ll never get back where one needed a degree of professionalism, integrity, wit, charm and personality to become a tv star… now tv Celebs fall out the corn flakes boxes in the dumpsters of Essex and god knows where else…. These guys were a dying breed …
The background work too, i mean usually the winner carries onto the next programme, so they had to contrive or least plan around having two brand new contestants...

Noel's House Party was brilliant Saturday evening TV back in the day. I mean it was a load of nonsense - almost Pantomime like - but it was unmissable.
By all accounts, Richard Whiteley was a lovely, lovely man - a real gentleman! His onscreen persona wasn't a persona but what you saw was what you got. I once met him shopping in ASDA and can attest to this fact. Much missed! X
Ah classic Countdown. I remember this being a staple of my youth for as long as I can remember. Truly one of the saddest days for television when Richard passed.

Edmonds knew how to make shows that people wanted to see. Ant & Dec Saturday night was also good as they coped Noel and said it needed to come back.
