The stove grill is supposed to be positioned so that the "handles" are upright, so they slip into the slots of the grill! cheers!

Yes , then they lift bigger pans up a little for airflow

I got the hinged "fire tray" version, sturdy enough to sit on. Then B&m bargains had disposable bbq's 10p reduced so took the grill mesh and folded up to hold embers.. Glows red hot, cooks, heats, grand job.
    Thanks for the tips

Hi Dan, randomly I asked for one of these as Christmas present to use as a mini fire pit. It was only after I pulled the hinge pins out to strip the blue protective plastic off (45mins later). I vaguely remembered seeing one on TH-cam and found your video which I had previously watched and forgotten about. I agree the stove is seriously unstable. Using a Dremel I cut the 4 slots to hold the grill (3mm deep) which improved the stability a lot. I cut a cardboard template to size the plate the sticks sit on and it made it again made a Hugh difference so my brother is cutting a piece of perforated plate steel 140mm x 137mm to sit in the bottom. Has I not seen your mods I wouldn't have bothered but they definitely make a huge difference. Perhaps a "How to" video from scratch to make the stove usable. Thanks for the video it was really useful.

Great mod which has improved the stove massively, it's clearly a lot stronger now. I really like the simple change you have made to the top grill so it locks in place now 👍

I don't do this often, buy something then watch the reviews. But here I am watching how to modify it to make it better and I haven't even had it delivered yet. From what I've seen, they work a lot like a Rocket stove with little smoke. Great tips👍

Personally i would drill 4 holes and file them out and not cut the handle odd the top grill. Less fiddly if you have a problem and need to take it off when it is lit. Will fit any way then. Cheers

Definitely improved the stove no end.
    Really like it.
Mine is slightly different, no pegs and the ash grill is attached inside.
I’m going to drill holes to slot pegs in at a height to allow an alcohol burner to be inserted.
Also I’ll do the two mods you’ve done to the top grill and I’ll add finer mesh to the bottom grill inside.
    Thanks for the tips.

I like what you did with the tray at the bottom to stop the embers falling through I think I might do that but my tray on my one is connected to one of the sites so it gives it a bit more rigidity but I might still have a go but what ever anybody does and what you have done to your firebox makes it a personal item to you which could probably make it last longer well done Dan

I like what you did with the top grate, going to do mine like this. I did a similar thing with the bottom fire grate only I used a double layer of expanded steel mesh because that's what I had laying around. I also drilled four holes on the sides close to the hinges to run some wire tent pegs through, which I drilled holes in on the straight side to allow for a small cotter pin to be put through and hold it tight, again using what I had on hand. It's really not a bad stove for the exremely low price. Just needs a bit of buttoning up to make it better

  • @peakfreak01
    @peakfreak01 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Top tips them Dan. Ta muchly. I've modded mine much the same. The ash tray doesn't need to be trimmed down though. I just filed either side of the bottom of the opening and it slid in great. That way it also stops the ash tray lifting, thus strengthening and stabilising stove even more.
I do like the fire tray mesh you've used. Whats it known as? I've got to get me some of that.

Great mods I’m not big fan of the folding stove even the BushBox XL I have the smaller BushBox pocket stove that comes apart I’d like to see some one come out a large model of the BushBox pocket stove the was heavy gauge stainless like maybe 18 or 16 gauge that you could cook bigger pots on I’m not worried about weight as much as strength an durability great video great mods just wanted to share my thoughts
    Thanks

I've got the hinged version, so it's a bit more stable. I am going to file some slots for the top tray to make it a bit more secure. If I can scare some up I might make a plate insert to cover the grill at the bottom though. I think I've got some scrap titanium sheet kicking about somewhere. so I might mod that

I modified mine a bit. Replaced the pegs with 4 little 2,5cm screws. Removed the useless handles. Replaced door ring with a really light ring.
I did it mainly for weight savings for hiking. I only use top grill when boiling water, so i just put it on diagonally. Got to find some mesh for the bottom from an instant grill.

I like modifying and encourage for it. I think your mod works well, though sometimes these type of products oughta be somewhat flimsy to allow warping due to heat or other bending during adventures. Surely you can adjust if problems occur but for general sales it may perhaps be better with loose tolerances. Also you added weight but won in performance so i'd say it's a good deal.

Thanks for the video, useful tips, I’ve only done the mod to the grill so far, just that has made a vast improvement. I think the ash try is a complete waste of time, if you pull it out the Ash will just fall to the ground? Might as well let it do that in the first place? By turning it 90o using the bigger slots as you’ve done will enable some Ash to come out on the tray.

That a lot better mate, you should have left the cooking grill as it was with out cutting the bar off at one end, it looks like the bar drops in nice at the other end and it looks like it holds the sides from bowing out, with the other end just picking through the holes that side might pop out when cooking and the rack pulls out of the holes and drop in the fire, what if you had a quarter pounder on it at the ahhhhh lol. How are things where you are with this virus? I do hope you and your family are keeping safe? My wife and I are in the self isolation due to health issues.
