    I've been using these packs, both a homemade version and a genuine issue Soviet Army one, but I'd never seen the one strap carrying version before today. BTW, just for your information. Vesh in Russian means, stuff, kit, belongings etc. Meshok means bag, sack etc. Therefore putting the two together to make Veshmeshok should make sense to everyone about what it is.

    I am gonna make a similar bag like this. I hope you see this commenr because I see you have not touched on your channel is almost a year. You are a great youtuber. One of the best I have ever seen and I have been on youtube for more than ten years. A legend. I am making this bag because I am turning away from computers towards engineering and DIY and most things I buy are designed to break. I am looking forward to this important equipment and I won't forget who helped along the way ❤

    Terrific as always! If I were king for the day, I would re-christen you Iodo, The Brilliant.
    Some random thoughts:
    1) As I understand it, the Snapsack started as a piece of canvas. You put your stuff inside, tied each end with a rope long enough to serve as a sling, and off you went. Interestingly, this is what sailors used to do with their hammocks. Their meager belongings would be rolled up inside the hammock when not sleeping, and all the hammocks would be stacked at the edge of the deck to provide protection against arrows and shrapnel. When a sailor left the ship. he would sling the hammock over his shoulder. Is this where people on land got the idea? Guess we'll never know.
    2) Take a big enough piece of canvas (I use a military poncho that's six feet by six feet . . . about two meters by two meters for you in the Metric Master Race) and tie each end with a rope long enough to make a sling. Put your stuff in a small sack and roll it up in your canvas/poncho and tie the ends with your sling. You are then traveling with your shelter doing double duty as a "snapsack."
    3) My cloth bag is much more practical than any of the numerous haversacks I own. My sling is just soft rope which can be used for a lot of things when hiking. I tie knots in the front and I then tie/hang a plastic water bottle from that. You can do the same with a small knife. My stuff goes inside a waterproof bag inside the cloth bag. That way I can throw tinder inside the bag and not get my stuff messy. The cloth bag can also be turned inside out and filled with material for fire or as a seat cushion. (I suppose it could be a great pillow, but I never nap while hiking so I haven't tried it.) A cloth bag is also a great tool to grab hot metal cups. Like someone says below, it's just super versatile.
    The only "caution" is that if you go hiking with your bag on a trail where other people hike with the latest 21st Century backpacks . . . you're going to look and feel like a bum. On your side of the pond, "bum" means buttocks, and I suppose a case could be made for saying that carrying a bag on a hiking trail full of hikers with expensive kit, will make you look like an ass. But I'm using the term bum as we do over here . . . a vagabond. In other words . . . you're going to look like 99% of the population in the Middle Ages or Middle Earth. I actually find that when I carry stuff in a primitive style, I feel mentally looser and more earthy. Hopefully, that makes sense. 😀
    Thank you again for a terrific video, Iodo.

    Hey Iodo, just a quick video idea: Would you consider making an oilskin / waxed canvas cloak and comparing it with a wool cloak? You can make a couple of videos about the process of making the waxed canvas and turning it into a cloak, and another video about the comparison. I have my own opinions and would appreciate yours.

    usefull shape bag, could also be attached to a frame/roycroft style , ive seen a version , possibly by mors kochanski, that had loops in bottom corners, and the strapps was loose, the straps went through loops, then tied back around waist meaning you could cinch it tight and hold it firm in place....

    Awesome video! In a previous video you mentioned something about the possibility of your fans sending you fan mail, gifts, etc. I know you are a fan of knives. What are the regulations for ulive regarding receiving something like that as a gift in the mail?
    Also, if that material is just cotton or canvas, I think it would be interesting for you to do a follow-up video where you treat it with Sno Seal or just a kind of basic traditional mixture of paraffin and beeswax in order to make the bag water repellent. It would be cool if you did that to see you take it on one of your adventures and test out its ability to keep the things inside dry.

    • @IodoDwarvenRanger
      @IodoDwarvenRanger  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      sadly no knives, customs have a habit of randomly destroying things for no reason, some of the time they get through but it's not worth the risk
      I use-to wax bags to keep them waterproof but they tended to get wet anyway, then they took longer to dry, now I just wear them under a cloak if it's raining, that seems to work better, my favorite waterproofing was always gold label fabric wax, I guess I could make a video anyway, I'll add it to the list ;)
