Roller Crimping a Thick Cover Crop

- Hang out in the field with the Bailey's as we roller crimp a cover crop cocktail including sunflowers, radish, sorghum sudangrass, clover, vetch and cowpeas. We planted to promote soil health and suppress weeds, then crimped to prepare the land for rye planting ahead of a cash crop in the spring. Follow along as we use a John Deere 6430 and I & J roller crimper to terminate our King's Agriseeds mixes.

Look up the Valentini Stone Crusher...if you can find one in your area it will make those limestone out croppings into dust. Then you can bring some dirt in and mix it and you'll be good to go

Big rocks usually cover themselves up with soil
Not as pretty but put a herd of cows in the cover and they do much the same job. They even recycle it turning it into earthworm food. Did the clover crimp? One NZ farmer says it doesn't but there's crimpers and there's crimpers right?

What was your growing season for this cover crop? Planting date to rolling date? Where are you located?
Are you in kansas ie using ks sunflowers. Been using this roller on sun flowers many season? What cash crop you planting after you eat all the/daikon or maybe just a few ...they taste great. Did/you plant /flowers in pasture. I missed beginning. Dennis

that field was nearly too beautiful to crimp...
Be careful with the organic lightening in a bottle stuff, it’s not cheap, and it often doesn’t live up to its claims. 70% of your weed suppression comes from that cover crop, and your cash crop closing canopy gives you another 28%. The remaining 2% is going to require some investment, but it’s necessary.I’m talking weed zapper and row mow. Check around and look in to borrowing or renting until you get further along. Moving to 20” spacing was great for us, but we did ok with twin 30” as well.
Regenerative farming is all data interpretation. Soil testing, sap testing,, tissue testing, GPS tech is huge, Being able to vary planting rates, keep soil compaction to a minimum, and for me, LIVESTOCK! They are my cornerstone.

Where is your farm ? How many seasons have you crimped sunflowers. I crimped/flowers in NE KS several years ago and got nothing else planted. Got a lot of mature sunflowers whichPERHAPS grew the ne xt season if I remember correctly. CANNOT BE SURE AS SOME/TIME HAS PASSED. DEN
I think flowers loosened my hardpan.
