Before I watched your video, I didn't even realize I was holding my brush pen in a NOT perpendicular way! Now, holding my pen perpendicular to the paper made all the difference. My upstrokes have improved. Thanks a lot! 😊

2nd video I've watched of yours! I just bought a calligraphy kit from HL yesterday, and it has fountain pens in them. I think I really want to learn to use the oblique pens, but I do want to learn brush calliagraphy too.... the paper position and angle of instruments are all different on these.... there's so much to learn!

Perfect. I'm a total beginner and I was looking for this exact info. I couldn't get thick downstrokes and I figured it had to do with how I was holding my pen.
Maybe change up your grip. Maybe you're holding your pen too rigid and that affects things.

Any advice for us lefties? It seems that modern calligraphy is the way to go (no angled tipped pens), but how should we place our paper and angle the pen?

Which is the best pen for calligraphy?
Actually depends on the type of calligraphy you are doing in regards to holding a brush pen vertically. I've been taught to hold it vertically

EEK! Am I the only one who does this? I use the index finger of my left hand to brace against the thumb of my right whenever I'm writing.

OMG please don’t encourage people to hold their tools improperly!!! Grips are just as important as anything else.
