The problem is a few bad apples take advantage of it and effectively use it as a shield, get into fights while off duty, etc.
An assault on LEO charge can be obtained very easily (as in the case of this poor guy) and stays on your record for LIFE. Not to mention, anytime LE sees that on someone’s record, they’re going to treat them VERY differently from the general public.

To the cops in this video: You assaulted a deaf man and falsely accused him of resisting arrest. In fact, you should quit working in law enforcement and NEVER be in the public eye because you just feel like discriminating against innocent people.

Being deaf is not an excuse to get out of your car and approach police. He should know the rules of staying in your car. Yes he was also resisting arrest. You don't fight police when they're trying to arrest you. If they're ever in the wrong than you can argue about that in court. Too many uneducated ppl in the comments who don't understand the difference between right from wrong.

@@unoriginalegg9899 Sigh, I want to see where you’re coming from and I understand you’re trying to be fair and see the situation for what it is but I think it’s clear he was disoriented in that moment and that he wasn’t sure what to do, you can imagine if you were deaf your other senses might be heightened as a result, explaining the bright lights directly in front of him for an extended length of time being an issue. Perhaps if they had simply looked up his license plate and seen that he was deaf they wouldn’t have tased and beat this young man and put him through torture! That’s doing your damn job! He had no weapon and was not making any threatening gestures, all he did was simply not respond to receive that sort of brutality which extended to four months in a jail cell.
Ask yourself if this was your own family member or close friend if you’d be satisfied with the treatment they received.
In not just my opinion but the opinion of the actual law, I’m pretty sure you can’t just go and beat a man for nothing. Especially a disabled man at that in a professional setting. The excessive force was completely unnecessary and so was the jail sentence. This is absolutely ludicrous and they should be punished and this young man as well as his family who was probably worried sick about him should receive compensation. I can’t imagine what they all must have gone through. This is an absolute tragedy that needs to be brought to justice.

He hopped out of his way and moved towards officers. How were they supposed to know right off the bat he's not a threat, that he doesn't have a knife, and that he's not trying to fight them. Look at it from their perspective, put yourself in their shoes. That is NOT a normal reaction. He should've stayed in his car, deaf or not, that is what you do. You don't get out. On top of that, you saw a 30 second clip, the part the news wants you to see. You didn't see the entire 30+ minute interaction. You don't know what else happened. Nice try though.

I have no problem with him being tased or even arrested.
I have a BIG problem with him going to jail for 4 months.
He could also have undiagnosed mental health problems.
Not everyone knows the proper ways to interact with the police.
I understand that he seemed like a threat to them but I believe anger management classes, community service, training on how to interact with the police and informing him about proper resources like the card the woman was holding was the best way to handle this situation NOT JAIL TIME.
But I'm sure he couldn't afford proper legal representation.
It's the jail time I actually have a problem with. This video actually brought tears to my eyes.
I was born and raised in Nigerian, Africa and here people use their horns a lot to signal when driving and I'm always complaining that it will be dangerous for deaf people to drive in my country because drivers assume every other driver can hear them when they press their horns.

I mean, he did hop out of his car and go towards them. He could clearly see the lights and officers in uniforms and very likely saw their lips moving. They had the right to put him to the ground, and it’s harder than it looks to get someone cuffed. That’s why you often times see many officers on one person, they can just tuck their arms under their stomachs. The taser was unnecessary though.
