I have always loved the grimy, nasty, degenerate feel of the game. How everything feels so grimy and raw and dirty, with tools not only in the gameplay, but with the cameras and musical instraments, being used to do something they were never meant to do. The game feels wrong and raw, gritty and rough. Nothing is elegant or fancy in the game, everything is raw, awkward, and rough. I honestly loved that atmosphere and I really love this game.

Great vid, Grim - Manhunt's one of those games where there's that kernel of a really interesting story in there, like you point out with Piggsy, but it's lost in the midst of all the sneak-and-slash gameplay. Weirdly enough, the not-really-a-sequel seems to try and make more of a 'point' about the violence, but ends up becoming more incoherent in the process.
Too bad lots of lore were not in the game. There was (still is maybe?) A website where you could listen to the reporter's asylum sessions after the game (she didn't deal very well with everything and they kinda made everything she found sound like something else and discredited her). Piggsy was the Director's previous "main star" and was already mentally unstable. Starkweather simply pushed him as much as he could.
Just found your channel this morning and now I'm watching all your game reviews. Love your style. Gritty and speckled with humor. Much like my life! Keep it up bro!
This game was and still is special. Sure the gameplay is stiff by todays standards but man did it really nail that snuff film vibe that they were aiming for imo. When you first start it had the uneasy mix of disturbing you but at the same also scaring the shit out of you. The feeling of being the single person being hunted is overwhelming. As you progress you can feel that shift happening from hunted to hunter. It's in the story and as you come to grips with the game mechanics and start to become a more proficient killer. Truly a cult classic at this point.
Well its nice to see people use my Manhunt Windows 10 Fix,thank you for the review. Manhunt is a solid and gruesome stealth survival horror experience also it is a grotesque take on society and its hypocracy in general , the gangs represent different groups(the dialogues are great) and even today Manhunt is still a great and enjoyable gameplay experience. As a long time stealth and survival horror fan I can recommend Manhunt to people who like stealth games (Thief,Splinter Cell,Deus Ex) and good survival horror games(Dead Space,Suffering,Resident Evil,The Evil Within,Silent Hill),play with the lights out and on hardcore difficulty, relying on your senses, don't use the radar its cheating. As for casuals I dont recommend this game, because yes this game requires patience, skill, listening to every sound to get through a level, once you get to the level Border Patrol you will be breaking your keyboard multiply times since the Cerberus will one-shot you and you start it well with empty hands ,but scenes like Mouth of Madness and Kill the Rabbit are totally worth it.The only downside is the shooting mechanic-which is well GTA 3 type horrible, especially if you are a stealth game fan. But overall Brian Cox voicing the Director(Lioinel Starkweather),gritty snuff film atmosphere, atmospheric soundtrack and each gang represents its own unique and funny dialogues, and well there is Piggsy make Manhunt a great and enjoyable experience even today.
I thought it was kinda... Eh. It was just like the rest of the game, but this time around, you're babysitting a hobo. Telling them to wait in a shadow while you go do your thing, then backtrack to them and progress. I thought it was just a bit more annoying. Still good, since a lot of it tested your stealth skill and such, since there were multiple times you came upon a group of 3 or more people in a confined area.
I like Road to Ruin, especially for the music. It sells it to me. Divided they fall, excellent. And I was shocked and so into it playing Strapped for Cash. Then View of Innocence comes and gives another turn to the game. I could go on. I'll just finish by saying the last five scenes are great and among my favourites (and frustrating) too.
Manhunt isn't Rockstar's best, but it is an unique game for them. You can play it on PS4 through their PS2 on PS4 section on PSN. Adds trophies too. May be check out Manhunt 2, that one has more of a story.
The 1st Manhunt game is one of Rockstar's best and most underrated games. The 2nd game is crap, the studio that made the 2nd game didn't understand what Manhunt was about. It had over the top executions to the point of absurdity, it never felt gritty and realistic like the 1st one. The 1st game also had way way better atmosphere, soundtrack, setting and it also has Brian Cox as the big bad guy.
I don't understand why people are so shocked Rockstar ended up riding the GTA fast money train and gave up on taking risks and having original ideas. Y'all, it's in the title; selling out is what 99.9% of rock stars do.
I always remember the insane asylum. The banter the inmates say while your playing left a real impression. Sometimes I repeat those sayings at work....Randomly. Finally was able to get this going on Windows 10...
those children at the start were definitely coached or were asked questions they could only give limited answers to and they were just showing them out of context
Lol I got this game cos my dad bought it cos he liked the GTA games and he told me the first night he played it it was at night and it scared the shit out of him lol he caught me playing it once and I got in shit lol
A modern remake specifically made to update the graphics and executions to a modern standard would be pretty interesting to see how truly gruesome the executions are
Ya, it’s all video games especially GTA’s fault & gun control laws- NOT the negligent parents who are responsible for their monstrous brood…. Ya, that’s the problem: let’s just pass the buck here for a payout (totally not another example of gross negligence)… AFTERTHOUGHT EDIT: Your video content is so awesome, brutally blunt yet honest-Refusing to pull any punches yet manages to remain unapologetically fair. You are a breath of fresh air in an industry rife with crooked influencers who, bought & paid for, shamelessly submit bogus reviews to be force fed down the consumers throats at every turn! Thanks for being a real one Grim, Ave Satanas!
Access to guns is like gasoline. It might not be the cause of the fire, but it will certainly help it grow. One could wonder if american citizens are mentally and socially stable enough to deserve the right to bear arms.
You did a really good job reviewing this game, I'm glad to know that other people still care about this game. If you get the time for it, could you do a review on Manhunt 2.
Fun Fact: The Xbox port of this had a feature where enemies could be alerted by sounds in a microphone. (23:03) In true stink boy fashion I farted into the mic to test this theory and proceeded to laugh uncontrollably as enemies became aware of my presence and subsequently beat me to death.
Fuck dude listening to your videos is like a goddamn history lesson and the history is about us. I grew up being told that the video games I play is going to turn me into a school shooter and that I was addicted and will be like those Colombine kids. Its crazy because now that I study these sociological/criminology concepts I know how much bullshit all of that was. There was a time where I was genuinely feeling ashamed that I played video games and would actively avoid telling other people I played them at all in fear of being seen that way. Thank you for making these glimpse in the past parts of the video to explain the historical context its gratifying to know that it isn't forgotten because it should NEVER be forgotten.
This game was great with a mic when you turn up the sensitivity to max. It forces you to hold your breath when in close proximity to enemies, and really enhances the already tense stealth elements.
Thank you for your efforts on making videos, i'm in a country with complete quarantine, and depression is starting to get to me slowly, your videos help an awful lot, mister! So, thank you for the hard work!! And take care of yourself, good sir!
16:02 I remember a long LONG time ago(like shortly after the game was released) there was an ancient interview with one of the writers stating there was originally going to be more back story for Cash(not much but more than what was given) in that he was involved in the murder/excecution of a police officer in the early 90's and was on the run for a decade. You can kind of still hear remnants of this story later in the game when see how noticeably hostile the corrupt Carcer City police are to Cash and they call him a "cop killer"(I always saw it as them calling him that because you do kill several cops in the game, but this back story gives it more meaning). The idea was dropped to give him more mystery as(loose quote): *not knowing what this guy could have done to have him in this situation kind of places him on the same footing as the filth he's found himself mixed up in. A back story makes him special. We didn't want him to be special or above anyone in the story. What did he do? Who cares. He's a piece of trash, same as everyone else in this city* Basically they wanted Cash to blend in with every other piece of filth you run into in Carcer City and didn't want Cash to stand out. But I always took that as his canon backstory even though it was removed.
Carcer City, the place that Manhunt 1 takes place is west of Liberty City, the city in GTA3. Manhunt 1 is set in the same universe as the GTA PS2 games. I always thought that was awesome
I have a distinct and vivid memory to this day of describing the kills in the game to the other boys during P.E. in middle school whose parents refused to let them play it. As this was at a time where a lot of friends and acquaintances of mine were being helicopter-parented due to a new 'violent vidya games' panic. My parents trusted that I wasn't a psychopath, and it always surprised me how many parents didn't think as highly of their children. Playing Manhunt was no different to me than blowing up GI Joe figurines with fireworks, or burning ants with a magnyfyting glass. Except significantly less destructive. >__> But then again, I also played the likes of Chrono Trigger and Super Metroid and Donkey Kong 64, if a kid _only_ wants to play manhunt, Hitman Silent Assassin and GTA3 then maybe I'd understand wanting to keep it away from them. But I digress.... I think I remember it so much because afterwards It kinda hit me how I must sound gleefully recounting sawing some guys head off with a wire, or wrapping a plastic bag over someones face and strangling them... Didn't stop everyone from calling me Hitman throughout middleschool and a bit into high school. How many kids get such a badass nickname? :P I also recall getting called into the guidance counselors office and being grilled about why other kids called me the Hitman. I should've said it's because I can make you tap to the sharpshooter! I was totally on some list I am sure. XD
Manhunt lore actually becomes interesting when you think about what isn't shown and what isn't explained. How do these locations get scouted, secured and staged. Who and how many people are in on the conspiracy? Pigsy, by my interpretation is your predecessor. He probably did all the same stuff Cash had to do, he survived, was double crossed and locked up as a plaything, now a broken, soulless killing machine. He's a reflection of what Cash would have been. (Also that 3D Movie Maker at 31:10. takes me back.)
Also doesnt help that those kids parents are to blame as they clearly did nothing to stop their children from playing let alone purchasing it, but no lets ignore that
18:04 is the hardest I've laughed in a long time. Just the idea that you're talking about how masculine and gritty the game is, only for a literal nazi to call you a chicken is great. But what's even better is your commentary "who's the chicken now?" It sounds so deliciously unhinged but comedic. Especially with your little chuckle when you start speaking that line. And what's the cherry on top? That perfect cut RIGHT as you disintegrate the nazi's head. Even cutting off the end of the word "now" All those things mixed and made a hilarious moment. Thanks for that 😆
Loved this came... I recall cheering in the room when we first got it and the first kills was executed. So much joy. Only real downside to me is lack of replay value - but it's fairly easy once you've gone through it the first time making a re-visit fast & easy to do...
I gotta wonder, is it easier to stalk Stacey when she can’t leave her home or harder because you can’t leave yours.. Also, I did like this game but I also wonder if it’s being viewed through the rose tinted glasses of the recollection of youth. I still have the hard copy so maybe I’ll dig it out and find out. There’s some good suggestions in the comments. Whatever you decide, already looking forward to the next review.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. Rockstar should make a straight-up horror game. Not necessarily another Manhunt game, but maybe taking some inspiration. The darker creepier elements of RDR2 to me looks like someone working there has a lot of spooky game ideas just dying to get out into the world. Rockstar are never gonna do it though /: except for Capcom with Resident Evil, I don’t think any major studio sees horror as profitable anymore. It makes me sad
I love your videos dude, the music and the comedy and the whole sorta grimy aesthetic of the vids just vibes with me perfectly bro aaaaaaah, chillin and watching this shit is me in my happy place 😏
When I was a kid, an older cousin had it for the 64 and it's one of the first gaming experiences where I recall being amazed by a story. Around that time, I played a lot of the first two Dooms, Quake, Zelda and Mario, but it never occurred to me that a game could tell a story like shadow man did. I would love to revisit it and see if it holds up. If Grim ever reviews it, that'd be amazing. What parts disturbed you most?
I feel like this game would do really well with a remake. With the current technology Rockstar possesses and their talent with crafting fleshed out single player experiences these days, it would be perfect to really fully realize Manhunt.
I'm surprised it took this long before anyone even mentioned Manhunt! I loved it! Of course, I'm an adult and it was meant for my age group. Manhunt did for stealth what Metal Gear couldn't. Metal Gear was too frustrating. Manhunt was easy to play and, regardless of what XBOX magazine said, it WAS interesting and forced me to want to see what lay around that next corner! The second one I didn't really get into as much. They slightly changed an already perfect formula. As far as games go, it remains in my top 10 because of the gameplay. Not to mention the 'Director' was done by Brian Cox (Agamnon in Troy). It might be dated now, but the amount of dialog put into it was really impressive for the time and it's still fun today. I'd like to see a remake. The claw hammer and baseball bat were also pretty gruesome! The camera would swing around to give you the most nauseating view possible. The missions were varied though and changed up at a nice pace. Strange though. I never really got into the GTA series. Manhunt was a different story altogether. I played it on my PS 2 and it ran great. Almost tailor made for those controls. I'm glad someone finally did a review of this one!
Is that what that game at the start was? My friend and I constantly gift each other all those crap 99 cent hentai games on steam, and I think I actually own that one lol.

The violence in this game is no different than what happens in certain parts of this world on a day to day basis, minus the snuff film plot. This game feels like a fitting statement on real world violence, and shows the personification of human cruelty. It's not just violence for violence sake, it has a message to tell us. It's also a terrifying experience and a great game with a. awesome storyline!! I'm glad I own it.
God we need a remaster of this game, I feel like audiences today would be much more welcoming towards a game like this. Seeing this world remastered with modern graphics and maybe more refined gameplay along with expanding more on the story of Cash and the snuff ring would be amazing. This game's premise and story has so much more potential that needs to be tapped into.
18:20 Why'd you start sounding like Xavier Renegade Angel for a second? Anyways, I'm surprised you never got to this game sooner. I remember this game being such a big deal, that I got into trouble in school for barely even talking about it.
Games will always be to blame in the media's eyes. Not upbringing. Not environment. Not mental illness. They'll blame the thing that normal and sane people use without hurting anyone. Mortal Kombat, Doom, GTA, COD, the gun, the knife. That's what the media will blame

This is a good game , very atmospheric and dark. The mission ''Drunk driving'' stands out and is the best part of the game for me
I thought it was kinda...
Ahh.. yes.. I was waiting for this one. Perfect timing, too. Thanks, Grim. Stay healthy!
Manhunt isn't Rockstar's best, but it is an unique game for them.
You can play it on PS4 through their PS2 on PS4 section on PSN. Adds trophies too.
May be check out Manhunt 2, that one has more of a story.
MANHUNT and The Warriors are my favorite Rockstar games.
I think it's one of their best lol.
Also to the other poster, yes. The Warriors is fucking amazing
@@SnizelOfficial agree
Genuinely upsets me how underrated this channel
Is, you really do deserve to be so much bigger
I don't understand why people are so shocked Rockstar ended up riding the GTA fast money train and gave up on taking risks and having original ideas. Y'all, it's in the title; selling out is what 99.9% of rock stars do.
What about bully? Did well and was a risk. I just want bully 2 😭

FAM. SAME!!! 😭
If you've got a gothmobile, does that mean you work out of a gothcave? 🤔
I always remember the insane asylum.
The banter the inmates say while your playing left a real impression.
Sometimes I repeat those sayings at work....Randomly.
Finally was able to get this going on Windows 10...
Which sayings u repeat at work
Which sayings u repeat at work
those children at the start were definitely coached or were asked questions they could only give limited answers to
and they were just showing them out of context
I am still surprised, I tricked my parents into buying me this.
How?
@@CAMSLAYER13 Just told them it's a hide and seek game. Same with Resident evil 4.
@@Blinkster93 Well, in a way, you didn't lie completely to them...
Lol I got this game cos my dad bought it cos he liked the GTA games and he told me the first night he played it it was at night and it scared the shit out of him lol he caught me playing it once and I got in shit lol
lucky:)
Best news today, a Grimbeard video. Thanks!
A modern remake specifically made to update the graphics and executions to a modern standard would be pretty interesting to see how truly gruesome the executions are
Ya, it’s all video games especially GTA’s fault & gun control laws- NOT the negligent parents who are responsible for their monstrous brood…. Ya, that’s the problem: let’s just pass the buck here for a payout (totally not another example of gross negligence)…
AFTERTHOUGHT EDIT:
Your video content is so awesome, brutally blunt yet honest-Refusing to pull any punches yet manages to remain unapologetically fair.
I just found this channel and its so fucking good i never thought id like the goth aesthetic but damn it works
You did a really good job reviewing this game, I'm glad to know that other people still care about this game. If you get the time for it, could you do a review on Manhunt 2.
Thing I want from Grim Beard:
1) the loops
2) Hatred review
3) Disco Elysium review
Listening to Grim Beard eviscerate Amazon reviews that are old enough to vote brings me so much joy.
Fun Fact: The Xbox port of this had a feature where enemies could be alerted by sounds in a microphone. (23:03)
In true stink boy fashion I farted into the mic to test this theory and proceeded to laugh uncontrollably as enemies became aware of my presence and subsequently beat me to death.
PS2 had it too
That's so fucking childish but I respect it lmao
I love your content man. You deserve all the best. Cannot thank you enough for the content and music.
Hell yeah I've been waiting for this one
6:26 story
20:42 gameplay
26:44 sight/sound
This game was great with a mic when you turn up the sensitivity to max. It forces you to hold your breath when in close proximity to enemies, and really enhances the already tense stealth elements.
the doomguy was a man gifted with the powers of a god. heart that one bud
I appreciate your funny rants before going into spoilers teritory. Keep up the good work!
Thank you for your efforts on making videos, i'm in a country with complete quarantine, and depression is starting to get to me slowly, your videos help an awful lot, mister! So, thank you for the hard work!! And take care of yourself, good sir!
You have saved us Grim, I send my appreciation
16:02 I remember a long LONG time ago(like shortly after the game was released) there was an ancient interview with one of the writers stating there was originally going to be more back story for Cash(not much but more than what was given) in that he was involved in the murder/excecution of a police officer in the early 90's and was on the run for a decade. You can kind of still hear remnants of this story later in the game when see how noticeably hostile the corrupt Carcer City police are to Cash and they call him a "cop killer"(I always saw it as them calling him that because you do kill several cops in the game, but this back story gives it more meaning). The idea was dropped to give him more mystery as(loose quote):
*not knowing what this guy could have done to have him in this situation kind of places him on the same footing as the filth he's found himself mixed up in. A back story makes him special. We didn't want him to be special or above anyone in the story. What did he do? Who cares. He's a piece of trash, same as everyone else in this city*
Basically they wanted Cash to blend in with every other piece of filth you run into in Carcer City and didn't want Cash to stand out. But I always took that as his canon backstory even though it was removed.
Carcer City, the place that Manhunt 1 takes place is west of Liberty City, the city in GTA3. Manhunt 1 is set in the same universe as the GTA PS2 games. I always thought that was awesome
Love it when TH-cam just doesn't notify me about channels I sub too.
But then again, I also played the likes of Chrono Trigger and Super Metroid and Donkey Kong 64, if a kid _only_ wants to play manhunt, Hitman Silent Assassin and GTA3 then maybe I'd understand wanting to keep it away from them.
I also recall getting called into the guidance counselors office and being grilled about why other kids called me the Hitman. I should've said it's because I can make you tap to the sharpshooter! I was totally on some list I am sure. XD
Evening 47. Your next target is a wealthy philanthropist going by the alias "Jeffery"
If you think about it too hard it gets too preposterous to treat seriously
Also doesnt help that those kids parents are to blame as they clearly did nothing to stop their children from playing let alone purchasing it, but no lets ignore that
I enjoy your content and I hope you continue.
Even cutting off the end of the word "now"
All those things mixed and made a hilarious moment. Thanks for that 😆
god damn i love everything you do.
Loved this game, i will always want a 3
Escape from Butcher Bay my man, still a game I replay every 2 years, and the dark athena update
Hey Grim!
Its ya boy who peddled smut. Totally happy you did this review. Love your twist and personality you put into this
That transition at 2:40 is SO GOOD WOW
Loved this came... I recall cheering in the room when we first got it and the first kills was executed. So much joy. Only real downside to me is lack of replay value - but it's fairly easy once you've gone through it the first time making a re-visit fast & easy to do...
Phenomenal video, and i love seeing the rest of them as well.
" the salon" ooh look at you referencing the public sphere oh la la, mister bourgeoisie.
One of my favorite games, objectively terrible at times but subjectively a master piece at the same time!
I love your videos dude, the music and the comedy and the whole sorta grimy aesthetic of the vids just vibes with me perfectly bro aaaaaaah, chillin and watching this shit is me in my happy place 😏
Dude I just found your videos and I have to say I fukkin love em man lol. Thank you youtube for pushing your content onto my screen. Easy sub for me.
>Long-winded..........YES.
>Helpful..........I don't know.
I don't know why, but this had my sides in orbit
Ever played 'Shadow Man'? Feel like that's right up your / everybody subscribers alley
Ashley Kettle - yeah, I loved that game. Swinging about over lava, switching between worlds. Tonnes of fun.
Adam West it freaked me out as a kid!! .... it was great
When I was a kid, an older cousin had it for the 64 and it's one of the first gaming experiences where I recall being amazed by a story. Around that time, I played a lot of the first two Dooms, Quake, Zelda and Mario, but it never occurred to me that a game could tell a story like shadow man did.
I would love to revisit it and see if it holds up. If Grim ever reviews it, that'd be amazing. What parts disturbed you most?
that casual Doom eternal review in the middle XD
I feel like this game would do really well with a remake. With the current technology Rockstar possesses and their talent with crafting fleshed out single player experiences these days, it would be perfect to really fully realize Manhunt.
What game is playing on the computer at 9:14 ?
I can't even wrap my head around what I'm seeing
A question that haunts many of my nights.
I'm glad someone finally did a review of this one!
as a stealth game, surprisingly solid
You got an amazing taste in Gothic music my good friend
And also funny jokes
I don't think any of us are freaking out enough about what the fuck grim was playing in the beginning
B**bs saga: prepare to h**t** edition
My boy Grimmy, good taste. Glad I'm not the only one who's played boobs saga
Is that what that game at the start was? My friend and I constantly gift each other all those crap 99 cent hentai games on steam, and I think I actually own that one lol.
@@gnarkillguch yeah man the one where it looks like the chick is inside someone's small intestine is called Boobs Saga. I think its 3 bucks but it's been almost a hear since I grabbed it.
just want you to know you're my favorite youtube channel on this platform by a long shot. Been going through pretty much all your videos for the past couple weeks.
Thank you for the video papa Grim Beard.
Your voice has an asmr quality. 👖👞
Talking about how good Brian Cox is AND mentioning Manhunter? Alright, I can jive with this vid.
18:20
Why'd you start sounding like Xavier Renegade Angel for a second?
Anyways, I'm surprised you never got to this game sooner. I remember this game being such a big deal, that I got into trouble in school for barely even talking about it.
actually spot on impression i thought gave me a grand ol giggle
Yeah I'm watching this at 4 AM because life is a game that was rigged from the start.
What about it?
Games will always be to blame in the media's eyes. Not upbringing. Not environment. Not mental illness. They'll blame the thing that normal and sane people use without hurting anyone. Mortal Kombat, Doom, GTA, COD, the gun, the knife. That's what the media will blame
18:05 "He called me a CHICKEN!?... well whoOooOsE tHe cHicKeeEenn noOoOooWw!??"
hahahahahahaah you got me rofl with right there man, you did an amazing review.

Another great review, awesome song at the end too.
would love to see a review of The Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena
