Your drywall vids are excellent. Please consider doing other topics, like carpentry or whatever. I think a lot of people will find them useful, like me. Best wishes and big thanks from a fan and neighbor south of the border
Ben, I have spent the last few months going through all of your videos…they are fantastic! You’re a wonderful teacher! I was able to use your videos to complete the walls in my bathroom (smooth even!!) . I couldn’t have done it without your videos…and it would have cost me an arm and a leg to have someone do it (I’d rather do it myself anyway!). Anyway…just wanted to say thanks for taking the time to teach folks to do your skill…it was much appreciated!
Thank you so much! I happy the videos helped!
Ben, I never drywalled or did any home style anything ever. I was a landscaper and irrigation guy for 15 years. Bought a duplex and 3 contractors later with botch after botch after poor decisions, i found myself having to stop and do all the work myself.
3 different drywallers got fired because of the joint compound and mesh tape, and how they "would float" out a wall an extra inch.
Seeing your videos, and watching many hours of them, i used fibafuse, ez sand, amd joint compound for the top coat.
My quality at the end was so good, that the one drywaller came back to collect his tools that he left from before i fired him, and he said "whoever you hired, actually is really good. Those outlet blanks came out good"
And i felt so good knowing a pro drywaller who does tbis daily, was jealpus and impressed by the difference and finesse.
I have to say, im finishing up the broken joints and corner beads with all the knowledge you gave me from your videos, and im super confident, i do it with such arrogance as i feel like im a pro myself now and the results i could not be any happier with.
I finally subscribed as you earned it and i absolutely reference your channel to many people as you are the ONLY one showing us the worst case scenarios and how to do it right in the face of disaster.
Your pva glue trick also works miracles and to this day, not a crack on any of my repairs and they are literally perfectly smooth.
Thats how i knew they were tailgate contractors. The joint compound would crack so bad within a week and it was shocking. Or they would just layer it and not sand it down.
Thank god for your channel and im excited to use your door install videos as my doors just got cut out from being so abused and painted 12 times. And i KNOW my door openings are fubared and crooked. So im excited to pursuade these doors in with the planer and multitool.
Thank you again ben for the confidence and now i consider myself a pro and would HAPPILY FIX OTHER PEOPLES DRYWALL FOR PAY
My all-time FAVORITE trowel is the one YOU use while you're doing my drywall work for me.
As a flooring installer, I've spread a LOT of glue on concrete (sometimes on myself). When your Trowel **is** an extension of your hand, it disappears, and you can make the glue do whatever you want. I loved every detail of this video. I'm no mud Picasso, just a beginner, but my 14x5 Marshalltown SS finishing trowel and hawk works well for me. Most of the mud ends up on the wall rather than the floor. 😅 **Ben is the BEST!**
ben its crazy that there is so much similarity between skateboards and trowels. makes sense you are drawn to both!
Most people collect cars, playing cards, figurines. Not the Vancouver Carpenter. He’s just built different. :)
Omg so true!
Oh yes I learned trowel collecting takes up a lot of space and you can’t get it cleaned of drywall mud.😂😂
My replacement corner bead project (rusted in bathroom window) went very well thanks to your tips. Thank you!
I think you should do more mud framing videos.
Alot of us home owners out here that bought new construction homes in the last year or two.... Yeah. There isnt a flat or straight wall in my entire house.
Ive been studying your mud framing vidros like a college course.
Great work once again my dude! Very helpful , i do my home projects like a pro from your vids
Perfectly timed video as I’m in the market for a new trowel and trust your opinion. It’s surprisingly difficult finding honest reviews of different drywall tool brands. Thank you!
'Picks up trowel'..........."I absolutely hate this trowel, always have"..........proceeds to keep it for 35 more years, just because.......you know, may need it again some day. That's so totally me. 😂
After 35 years in the plaster trade, my first choice for veneer or conventional plaster is Kraft elite series stainless trowels and second choice is Marshalltown. For drywall Marshalltown is my first choice. I have tried Curry on multiple occasions and are my third choice for plaster and absolutely hate them for drywall.
My dad always said if he had to be in a knife fight, he wanted his 6 inch taping knife lol razor sharp.
I LOVE my Level 5 12”x 4.75” trowel! You should give them a try. Pretty much all I use, started with marshalltown but the level 5 just feels better! Highly recommended!
I can’t believe a sat through a video on dry wall trowels? Man, I gotta get a life! 🤷♂️🇨🇦💝🙏😆
Thank you. I am not a dry guy but it's something I do from time to time and I want to do the best job that I can. You are my drywall guru. This video taught me a lot about trowels that I didn't even know that I didn't know.
You need one more trowel, my friend. I was gifted a FlexiTrowel. I tried and tried to find where I liked to use it. Its no good for stucco, which I usually do. I tried it on drywal, but the blade was too flexible and it would not fill anything. Then, I used it for a final skim coat. As a last coat on everything it puts such a nice finish on that you barely have to hit it with sponge sanding. I highly recommend it.
Thank you. Every time you post it makes my day. Your little black doggie is beautiful and the way that you interact with your wife as she acts as your camara operator,so respectful, so caring. You inspire a lot of people, please keep doing it.
I love Kirk, he reminds me of the Ringmaster at the circus as his kids are performing. You need to do a video with the headset for him. I have no idea how he can keep doing stucco at his age, but he taught me how to do a dashed finish for my last 2 houses.
Same, he taught me to repair stucco on small jobs, I do older homes mostly, and how ro repair plaster ,
and acrylic stucco , can't thank him enough for that.
Great video, thanks, Ben 😊👍🏴
When I was working on my project and I saw you were using a trowel all fancy like, I knew I wouldn't be able to handle all that. I ended up buying a 10" knife and doing my drywall with a knife and pan. However, I also installed tile and I did need a trowel for that and wished I got the trowel for drywall. It was pretty intuitive. Also, my wheelbase changes cause I always buy whatever deck is on sale. It's the broke life! I always make sure to get a double nose though. Can't go back to having a tail after that.
Any vids on drywalling and finishing a window casing, no wood trim?
The problem with the new Marshalltowns is the rubber handles. The old wooden handles are way better.
I pretty much only do hard finish and cement render, I carry six trowels in my daily kit and I have a few extras, like venetian trowels and so forth which I don't use that much. I buy cheap 28 cm steel trowels for rendering because they wear out so fast, then I have a heavy, inflexible 40 cm trowel for spreading the plaster. A pair of flexible stainless steel trowels that I've had for about ten years and which are now slightly curved and razor sharp for levelling out the second coat, a Nela flexi trowel for finishing and a really long, thin concreting trowel which is good for finishing off internal angles. My old boss used to use one el cheapo 28 cm trowel for everything, it drove me mad because he had to work so hard for the sake of not shelling out a few hundred bucks on decent tools. I remember accidentally knocking his only trowel off the scaffold one time and he went to pieces, it was like I'd thrown one of his kids off.
I was waiting the whole video for you to dog the gold marshalltown because that's the one I bought 😂 trowels are not common here in Ohio so I had a hard time finding one when I started watching your videos. Changed my life man, idk how I ever got any work done with a 12 inch knife!
I'm a mechanic that's how I am but with ratchets lol... I even have ratchets I cant stand using and I still have it lol
“Here’s a nice 14” wheelb… I mean 14” trowel” haha
I bought a "drywall finish" trowel from the hardware store and it was super stiff and basically didn't work, can't feather edges, can't skim coat.
I didn't know what I was doing wrong, and I was going to message you to ask what trowels you use. So thank you for this video!
Btw, just last week I bought a nela mid-flex SS trowel. And it was a complete game changer for me.
But I do add some tool lines when I'm swiping radially. So I will have to go measure the wheel base, and see if I can find & buy another one with the VC ratio to compare.
I'm a knife guy. My favorite is a 8" offset knife. I find that trowels aggravate my carpel tunnel. Good video Ben.
I have only really used Marshall Town Trowels but it is funny how your explanations high light some of my issues. Jeez I am such a loyal one trick pony. That being said for knives I like Level 5, especially the 6" knife. I need to branch out and experiment more apparently.
Used to have a 14 inch curry. Dropped it from a skyjack, got bent very bad and could not get it back in working condition. Bought a 13X5 marshalltown "curry style" trowel. Love it
I just finished taping and mudding a section of drop ceiling in my basement and I must say it’s the ugliest mess I ever saw. My style of applying mud is to just smear it into the cracks, let it dry, then sand the crap out of it. Then apply more mud, tape and more mud on top of that. It looks more like a stucco wall. If you walked into a job like this and had to work with this I’m sure you would have some choice words not fit for TH-cam. I wish I had a tenth of your skill. I will be sanding forever.
I learned lot about wheel base and feel thanks Ben
Try the Level 5 flat trowels. FOR SCIENCE
They come with the edges pre rounded.
I think I may have the same number of screwdrivers and tape measures. Only because I can never find one when I need them. So I buy lots.
I usually have about 5 tapes at any given time.
This DEEP DIVE is so necessary! I'm returning to my garage finishing (hung the drywall last summer...). I've been using a trowel for a while for applying the mud - but would really like to do my skim and feathering with a trowel. I couldn't find anything good at Home Depot so a bought a new 14" dewalt knife - i hope it works... now i know I need a 5x14 stainless trowel! Thanks Ben.
I've tried Dewalt knives and a few other items. I didn't like pretty much anything about them and now avoid them at all costs. I got my Marshalltown trowels from a drywall supplier. Not cheap, but for me they save way more in time than the additional upfront cost.
@@1984isReal Absolutely, Marshalltown trowels all the way buddy 😊👍
@@1984isReal I found the 5x14 Marshalltown, and used it today - really nice results. I've not used the Dewalt - so i think thats going back...thanks for the tip! The Marshalltown was $59USD.
Love your videos❤!
I do like my Marshalltown a lot but I got a level 5 trowel that I am really liking. 13x5 is favorite size don’t really use any other but You should try that brand out. They are highly rated online. Keep up good work Ben love the videos
That settles it, I'm buying a new stainless trowel. I'm tired of the poop stains on my jobs.
great video bro
Very awesome video! Thanks Ben ☺️
Love the video and a great collection 🤙
Next video, a knife video, perhaps?
Best saturday night of my fucking life cheers for the trowl workshop you taught me how to skim and feather on my last job pre covid and im tryibg to get back into the game and this has answered so much for me.
Can you grind the edges of a new trowl to simulate that sharp edge from your daily driver that you spruik about midway in the film ?
And i dont understand the freedom units but i can just tell from the look of them that i reckon your bang on for dimensions aswell ive always just been better with a squarer one but not too square anyways very cool that this video even exists thanks dude
You can try to wear them away on sandpaper but it’s hard to re-create good old fashioned wear from use.
Well I’ve never seen a video like this before lol. Thanks
Awesome video ben, wish i lived closer to you (im in Ontario) id give you a 12x5 inch Curry for that 4.5x14 curry you dont like very much. The 5 inch width is a bit wide for me on a 12" trowel.
It's been a few years, but any chance you could do a more comprehensive tool video again or have things not changed much since you started making videos?
In your US Home Depot video you recommended getting a flat 13" x 5" but you're mostly recommending 12" x 5". Would a 13" trowel with that sweet spot of about 1.5" flex on both sides be more desirable than 12" with only 1" of flex on the ends of the trowel?
What was the size of the gold and red handle Marshalltown at the end of the video? Can't tell if it's 12 or 13 inches.
The Kraft Tool trowels you recommended in the video description have long shanks offering only about 1" of flex at the end of the trowels. This seems common for most of the Kraft Tool trowels after researching actually. What situation would such a short flex be desirable? Also have you seen or used their optiflex line of trowels and do you have any thoughts on them?
Have you considered grinding down the shank to the length you like on trowels where it's long and doesn't give you the flex you like?
Curry 5x12 is available on the bay for $128USD including shipping to US
I don't use trowels, but this was an interesting video
Thanks Ben for the information. You have helped me so much in my drywalling practice. Steve from Drywall Solutions
Man I wanna take my gold mtown for a spin now, hopefully life will ease up soon and I can go spread some mud again. QUESTION.. do you LOSE the ability to Finnish drywall if you don't do it for a long time, just left my company 2 months ago and wont be back for a while?
Nope. It’s like riding a bike. You might be a bit slower but it doesn’t go away.
Can I count my notched trowels? J/K you still have me beat.
That’s it, I’m throwing in the trowel…
honestly ... i use a 12"for %90 of my work. once in a while ill pull out the 14". and veeeery rarely will i need to take out the 20-24". you only need like 2 or 3. oh yeah and an 8" for wall ends
Great video!

i have a 20 inch curry trowel i use it for my butt joints i usually apply with my 14 inch curry then smooth out with my 20.
I thought pro's liked Magnesium trowels? Not flexy enough?
I’ve never seen one.
@@vancouvercarpenter Concrete flat work ,,,,
@@als1023 Oh, yeah, I guess that's what i was thinking. Duh, brain fart.
@@jerrybobteasdale That is what I thought you were thinking, no worries ,,
The crowned trowels are really for the first coat over butt joints; but then when you spread it wider you need the flat trowel so yes limited use! Not worth it to me!
Do you have as large of a knife collection?
No. Nothing over 12” and nothing fancy.
dude,do you clean your shiet sometimes?
Hey Ben
I read towels.
the first one I ever bought got thrown against a concrete floor repeatedly till it was unrecognizable 😂😂
That tells a story. Not so easy is it😂
@@vancouvercarpenter that's nothing compared to what happened to my first corner trowel 😡
First Like! nice.
before you quit youtube, you have to do a stucco video with kirk giordano!
It’s on my bucket list

Ho Lee Trowel Batman you’re like a gun collector almost to the point of addict. Ask me how I know..
Interesting watch in front of your wife even. $$$$$ . I play at amateur drywall around the house. I know it’s all the trials are 😊the reason I have to sand so much ha ha.😊😊😊
I am the only one that comes here for a Ben Degros fix when it’s been awhile since we got a skate video ? 🤷🏻♂️😎🤙🏼🛹
cheap marshaltowns? c'mon, get some Curry's
