What an Artist, what a great soul, and what a lucid, fervid writer. I wept when I heard she had passed, for her 'voice' was so original, so raw, and authentic.....a sovereign talent! Edna will be forever missed. I have a brief few moments memory, when we bumped into one another in a supermarket buying groceries, and we laughed as we exchanged about the glory of her writers presence, and that there we were paying coinage for the veggies! God Bless this beautiful, elegant muse!.
This video makes my day. It is a pure gem. I love the way Edna O Brien speaks about literature with such poise, elegance and passion. Her passionate voice comes out in her most beautifully crafted sentences in her short stories - while they are written in prose, they belong to epic poetry. Her collection of stories entitled 'Lantern Slides' is my all time favourite. The opening sentence in the opening story is the most exquisite prose I've ever read.

Practically everything I read is about science, technology, finance, and other documentary subjects, but along the way, I read The Love Object, probably 45 years ago - a collection of short stories by Edna O'Brien, and it left an indelible impression on my psyche. Each story is quite different, each about the perception of life (or sometimes of a moment) by a different woman. I loved it. I came here looking for a passage from "How to grow Wisteria", to use as an analogy for mental hurt that my daughter is living through - but I can't find it online.
