The passing of a national treasure. Rest in peace Edna on Holy Island, Inis Cealtra. Thank you for sharing your gift of words and eloquence. And effortless elegance.
Beautiful voice. Just heard her interview with Duchess of Cornwall. Loved hearing the Irish tones coming through despite all her years in England. Duchess did a good job too
Oh how I relate to your anger, Dear Edna 👏 Only recently I was feeling the same way, I always stood back in quietness I recently was reviewing my life and I am so proud of all my achievements I earnestly wish to write, yet something holds me back My story woukd be to do with journeys , interwoven journeys, Ireland to Canada Mary Canada 🇨🇦
I love that Edna’s accent relaxed and became more ‘Clare’ as she grew older. In the 1976 documentary, she sounded more RP. Inordinately proud to be from the same county as one of Ireland’s great writers. Ní bheidh a leithid arís ann!
Also never read her but was always fascinated by her speech story telling of some far off-land of magic & mystery. Because one of my favourite actors was Richard Harris I give her very high praise and with the greatest respect as the female version but certainly more sober and poetic but equally earnest and above all with to paraphrase Noel Coward “a very great talent to amuse.” Uniquely Special Lady RIP.
I don't think of her as the 'female version' of anyone, she was uniquely, wonderfully herself. A person should read Edna O'Brien if they want to understand her.
I read The Country Girls trilogy and couldn't put it down. All three books in one edition. Within those days of reading - Kate and Baba were my friends. Complicated, longing, defiant, untamed, railing against the church, parental clutches and economic disparity. Edna's writing was/is enlightening. Brilliant. Such an eye opener about that generation of young women, the expectations on them, their broken dreams - so sad. RIP, Edna. You gave these women a voice whose realness stirred controversy and acknowledgement. You were brave.
oh my GOD!!!!!!!!!!!!! WHAT A FORCE OF NATURE IN THE ETHEREAL, REAL AND BEAUTIFUL WAY. THE WORLD IS LLESS HEAVENLY NOW IT IS WITHOUT YOU, OUR WONDEFUL EDNA

She has a hypnotic way of speaking. I could listen to her for hours...

I am so sad to hear of her passing. A brave and gifted woman.
A fearless teller of truths. RIP Edna
What a beautiful lady. As a 65 year old man I have never read a single word she has written. Better late than never.
Why not read her many works; start with a short story collection, maybe.
I’ve just finished watching country girls.
Please begin now …. All will fall in place … you’ve been given a gift of introduction 💔

'I am studious, despite the parties.' Same here, Edna!

RiP Edna O Brien. Such a talented person. Another example of the great artistry of the Irish.
Not another...THE !! example.
"My mother was very generous, but she didn't think he needed the bread buttered on both sides." Glittered specificity.
A true national treasure. I have a handwritten letter from Edna which is one of my most prized possessions.
Omg, thank you for sharing this great lady and artist. I’m inspired.

Lovely interview, fascinating lady!! I love the hints of her west Clare accent ❤
She was born up the road from me in Drewsboro near Scariff in East Clare. RIP Edna

A great Irish writer and a wonderful woman.🍀
To read Edna O`Brien is to sip a fine old wine. Thank you for this interview which opens the door to "Country Girl" which .absorbed me to last page.
She was a gentle warrior.
Her book “James Joyce” surely ranks among the greatest biographies of all time.
I loved her "the Country Girls". RiP

"I was busy,but I was lonely." A sparkling gem of a distinction.
Edna O’Brien was absolutely fascinating and brilliant ❤
I like her very much, as I do her writing.
Fans of Edna O'Brien's writing must read her latest novel, The Little Red Chairs. Age has only enriched her writing.
