    My wife and I got married under the Special Marriages Act in 1974. We belonged to the same religion and our parents were witnesses. I would have expected the process to be more user friendly given all the changes over five decades. Unfortunately, the bureaucracy still makes it so challenging. The bureaucrats should be trained to be more courteous and encouraging of couples who are idealistic in that they are willing to think and act beyond their narrow walls of religion and ostentatious weddings. We do not want zealots and busybodies interfering with most personal of life's decisions. We have a long way to go.

    My husband and I got married in Special Marriage Act. We are both hindus but since we didn't plan on having any hindu ritual marriage, just a simple court marriage and a reception we had to opt for Special Marriage Act. We actually didnt have to go through all this hassle. We just went to a marriage registrar office one day and submitted everything and she took care of the rest. Then just one day we did the actual signing of the documents and its done. Received our marriage certificate within 1week via post.😀

    Our marriage was solemnized by both hindu n christian rituals. We registered under this act. But it was in rural Tamilnadu as my husband's relatives arranged for everything. But when I went to sign, the registrar started making fuss that my parents also had to be there. They even took me separately to advice that love marriage doesn't work and i should go back to parents. My parents had taken a lot of leaves for both ceremonies and pre wedding, post wedding rituals and couldn't be there for registration. I had to show wedding pics, videos of my husband with my parents cutting cake and finally show my dad's passport proof and a call to get the registrar sign. Whew!
    It's difficult even if both sides are willing. That was 11 years ago!

But guess what, I am Maharashtrian and even with the wedding card, photos and temple receipt were we got married the registrar was not satisfied. Registrar asked for both my parents to be there. Only my mom had come with me as my dad is no more, after which he asked for my dads death certificate to prove that no one objecting our marriage. Being an advocate I can confirm you explained it very well. Also the starting part where you mentioned how different religions have different marriage laws. Yes, in India there are few fields where religious personal laws are into force like the marriage, property inheritance and some land reforms and that's why the current govt is focusing on implementing uniform civil code i.e. one law across country that will cater all religions and sectors of people to ensure uniformity in process and low red tapism and remove the requirement of personal laws wherever possible under article 44 of the constitution. A nice way to educate your audience and promote court marriages as it is the most sensible thing. Just do a court marriage and maybe if you want throw a reception for all the fams and frnds. Love is sacred according to Puranas, Abhimanyu's story and many of Lord Krishna's deeds are good examples of this. However, our last few previous generations considered it as sacrilegious.
    My only advice for Loving couples is to value their promises and don't ruin other bonds in the process. We are lucky to be born in India where family takes care of us while sacrificing their happiness. @@mathsreasoninglove3336 you are right, and he wasn't the only one who lsot his life to the patriarchy of society which perceives its honor to be limited to the womb of women of that particular society. And when i say society I mean caste based society or religion based society.
      Whether it was nagaraju, or it was arbaz mulla of belagavi, karnataka who was beheaded on railway tracks. They were victims of honor killings, just like thousands of such caste based killings that happen every year in cases of inter caste marriages. The religious demographics of our country mean that the majority community in different states is different. Any socio political Majoritarian radical group can use this notice board and the private information of inter religious couples to harrass them and this is happening irrespective of the identity of the Majoritarian group in question. I have seen people circulating pictures of these notices on Twitter, Facebook tagging extremist organizations and calling for stopping the wedding.Therefore we need to be more nuanced and make the system easier for all inter religious couples by weeding out such steps which expose consenting adults in front of radical extremist groups.
      Also the reason she didn't face any such harassment was because the socio political community in majority in Delhi didn't have any issue with the fact that a women of other faith was marrying into a favorable faith. All right wingers view women as transactional entity in such matters.

    The notice board display thing is so scary - similar to banns being read out in church but much more public.

      @SatshyaTharien  ปีที่แล้ว +20

      Thank you :) yeah I know! Atleast in church it’s among a community of people you know, but in a public space it’s quite scary 😟 regarding the second part - I don’t know, I’d like to think that all government offices are neutral & don’t make things difficult for people under the SMA. But it can be nerve wracking if one has for example, run away and trying to get married

    • @gmaxi360
      @gmaxi360 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The religious demographics of our country mean that the majority community in different states is different. The socio political power in the hands of for example the muslim community in srinagar would be very different from that in shimla just because of their percentage of population. Similarly the socio political power of a religious community xyz by virtue of their demography will be very different in meghalaya compared to say that in delhi because of their percentage in these states. Any socio political Majoritarian radical group can use this notice board and the private information of inter religious couples to harrass them and this is happening irrespective of the identity of the Majoritarian group in question. Therefore we need to be more nuanced and make the system easier for all inter religious couples by weeding out such steps which expose consenting adults in front of radical extremist groups.
      There are pictures of these notices circulated on twitter, Facebook tagging various right wing organizations calling for stopping these weddings between consenting adults. People need to speak out about this problematic step as it limits the free choice and privacy of adults.

    • @gmaxi360
      @gmaxi360 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@SatshyaTharien well said and it was good to see you speaking out despite personally not being affected by this invasion of privacy. Also the fact that you had your parents as witness made it easier. That other man had to spend 25k because his wedding was the more "revolutionary" If I can say so. Just because of the socio political climate of the nation. Very unfortunate to see this. Hopefully this step will be eliminated sometime in future, I have seen so many pictures being circulated by radical people on social media of these notices calling for stopping the wedding between consenting adults.

So i guess if ur fiance is a foreign citizen he has to be present
      I got married in dec under the special marraige act in West Bengal....the process was not that cumbersome...my husband is a US citizen....he just needed his driver's certificate, passport, visa n birth certificate... and i needed adhar card, age proof, n also 2 passport size photograph

      I think you shouldn’t marry interfaith. Hear me out first, marriage and family is an institution wherein you grow with your family as well so, point being each faith teaches certain things distinct from each other and preaches to live according to that principles so Hindu and Christian faiths are different hence, teachings different so, a good pool of Hindu men are also available for marriage as well go date Hindu man because at least punishment is severe if something wrong is done by him but under special marriage act the men can easily get away by saying this is the way things happen in our religion so choose responsibly.
