    I owned a 77' MGB and 77' Fiat 124 in the 80s.
    Fun, but horribly unreliable.
Finally got to drive a similarly aged Miata in the 90s and it was glorious.
    Everything Bill says is true!
Anyone who can drive stick..and fits, owe it to themselves to at least test one out!

I’m 6’6”, so barely fit in my ‘99 Miata. My saving grace is that I’m skinny. But I’ve learned a lot with this little car. I taught myself to drive stick in this thing, although I’d had some experience driving stick big rigs.
It’s even an ideal platform for learning auto mechanics. Everything is basically simple or small, so it never gets out of hand… Btw, my very first car ride ever as a baby was in my dad’s MGB. I was told the car swayed side to side on its shocks.

We called those the Tupperware edition. It’s a much prettier car without that stuff tacked on. I have owned 10 Miatas. Favorite is a ‘99 as it is very close to the same weight as an NA with a nicer interior and I think better styling.

@@tmo2798 That LS is 2387#. The problem I have with the later loaded NBs is that they were near as porky as the NC, but we’re basically still NA based. They did not have the structural integrity that the NC chassis had designed into it. I had a 2005 Mazdaspeed, which ironically was the heaviest NB they ever made at 2529#. The 2006 NC sport I bought was lighter at 2425#.

Proud owner of a 2004 Mazdaspeed Miata in St Petersburg, Fl. Supreme condition, 38K miles. Like Bill said, I never thought I’d love a Miata either. It’s all about usable power and balance. I used to notice them, from 1989 until late June 2018 when my wife said she wanted to go autocrossing. So, I bought her a 2001 with a 6 speed. She learned how to drive it and I fell in love with how incredible this cars handling is. My car still had its factory original, 17yr old tires. Even those rock hard donuts didn't diminish the excellence of this car. I replaced them a year later with Continental ExtremeContact Sport tires and whoa! Now, she wants to sell it because she would rather drive my GTO. So, I'm keeping them both. Her too.

The cool weather is whiskey weather!! Here are a few things you left out. The battery is in the trunk to better achieve weight distribution especially back over the passenger side rear wheel. Also, something that didn't make it into the NB model is the headrest speaker from the na. Most people can't believe how great the music sounds until I tell them that two of the four speakers are in the headrests. Great idea! Something they should revisit if they haven't

That the NB Miata resembles a baby Viper is no coincidence. Ken Saward, head of Mazda design USA got his start at Chrysler and worked on the Viper program. He also owned an NA Miata while working at Chrysler. When he moved over to Mazda, and had the opportunity to design the NB Miata, the Viper influence carried over through his own experience.

My sister (24 at the time) bought the first Miata in our home town back when they came out for 1990. It was basic red with no options and a stick shift.
Even though it had 116 horse it was a blast to drive in every sense of the word. So nimble and a shifter direct from God. This is literally the best executed car for what it’s meant to be. Light, nimble and the modest limits made it possible to drive a car at 10-10ths without prison time.
By the way this opinion is coming from a guy who has owed endless classic muscle cars and new Z06’s, M5’s etc.
The problem with Miata is that they made each update less attractive, fatter and less true to its mission than the previous one.
This in between year model isn’t as bad as the newer ones but the aero package on this one is f***ing hideous. Same for the oversized wheels.

@@MegaEdge777 Thanks Pal. I got it in '09, kept it stock for 10 years, then said to hell with it- got all kinds of Flyin' Miata bits. The Little Enchilada pack. It is an absolute hoot! Woosh PFFT! 💨

I'm going on my 3rd year with my NB. Which I thought was the most pristine NB until I saw this video.

Had an NB and NC. Each is special in their own way. Loved the look of the hood from the driver's seat. Always reminded me of a jaguar. Agree with others that the car is better looking without the body moldings. The formula was simple, copy an british open top sports car then put a good rear suspension, don't let the top leak and most importantly make it reliable.

Once again bill you're on the Mark. I had Hey 1990MX5In 1997With 26,000 original miles I bought it from a dentist. I was a 130 plumber I ain't got a lot of crap For it. It was white With a black Top . Hand creek windows Pop up headlights Cloth interior. It was quick nimble And you can wind it out. But I loved it Thanks for the memories

" Garage Queen ". I've never heard that one prior yet it certainly perfectly befits an ill used vehicle. Thanks as always Bill for the reprieve from what is the bat shit crazy state of affairs. Best

Bill, I absolutely love the MX5 and I'm determined to own one day, but I actually don't like the body kit on that car (personal opinion). What the British missed out on when they 'owned' that particular market segment!

I drive a '99 with a chin spoil on the front and a small stock spoiler in the back. It much more subtle and the light touches are nice, they are not overkill like the one in this video.

I have my 3rd Miata, and it's my fourth roadster. Started with an NB, then an NC (but kept the NB) then went to Europe, so sold the NC took the NB overseas. Sold it there before coming back. Back in the US after 3.5 years, got me a Porsche Boxster. A mistake... Was not happy with it - really. (I must be a freak). No problems with the Boxster, but sold it after 1.5 years.
And now I've got an NC and am happy again. (Don't care for the ND's looks)
I'd like to have an NB again concurrently with the NC, so where and when is the auction?

One time a few years ago I was out for a drive in my NA, just after sunset top down going about 25-30mph when a house sparrow swooped left to right in front of me as I drove, and went low enough that he got clipped by my passenger side popup headlight. I watched his dead little body fly over my head and land in traffic about 15 feet behind me, and I remember it like it happened today.

What a great car and showing. Damn, I wish I wasn't 6'6" after watching this. I have sat in the passenger side in one, and it wasn't pretty. I would really have a hard time driving the stick shift.

That example should sell ASAP, being a showroom quality, low mile, still-factory example. Not a huge Mazda fan, but the Miata was/is second to none and didn’t need a ton of power and/or loaded with tech, to be so. Just an affordable, quick, good looking, and very well sorted out from the factory roadster that isn’t intimidating to wrench on.

Back in the 90s, a friend of mine left his 1st gen Miata with me when he and his wife went on vacation. Of course I knew that (and joked to him) that since I'm very very tall, it's physically impossible for me to get behind the wheel much less take it anywhere. I joked that if my house caught fire, I'd have to push the car away.

Very nice car, great video too! It has the same interior color scheme as my 2008 Mazda 3 and I like it! But I'd much prefer to have one with the Mazda 3 2.0L engine than the ancient 1.8L. I had a 99 Protegé in the past with the 1.8L and it didn't had great fuel economy.

That would be an ND. Or for the Mazda 3 engine significantly improved it would be an ND2.
