I'm from Taiwan and currently in the US. I totally understand how surprised you are. Almost all foreigners are stunned when they first encounter. Yeh we have almost the best public medicare system with high quality treatment standard in the world. From some reports, we're even ranked the top. The current public health system in Taiwan is more like social welfare, less like insurance. In order to take care of severe ills, the system is designed for each resident to pay fairly and enjoy qualified treatment. For the severe ill or rare diseased patients, the system takes care of a great proportion of the costs. There's also a history of high standard medical treatment system. One of the reasons is the quality of doctors. The elite of Taiwanese, yeh those smartest guys usually learn medicine as their career option. It's a historical tradition ever since japanese colonial era (history :-)). Of course, there're still different layers to form this result. Like the sloppy medicare system kidnapped by insurance companies in the states, there're tons of causes. Complicated. You might be happy now that you're able to figure it out in Taiwan amid this pandemic. :-) Cheers.
One of the greatest reasons I chose Taiwan was the healthcare! No system is perfect but the US can flat out ruin your life with medical bills. I'm so happy to be here, during COVID I can still work and be safe. In the US not only would I struggle with work (I used to work in schools), but if I felt I had COVID I would be afraid to get tested. Tests are free...but treatment..it's so sad what it all came to.

I'd check out twforumosa.com and maybe you can ask there as there's lots of expats that post there about living in Taiwan. I have hashimoto's disease, it's only one medication, but I have no issues getting bloodwork, seeing the doctor, etc.

medical expenses in the united states ARE much too high, because of GOVERNMENT. big pharm corporations are huge donators to politicians who pass laws protecting big pharms monopolies from any competition, so there is virtually no limit to how much they can charge for their drugs.
I am from Singapore. We have a reasonably good healthcare system here. But I think Taiwanese system is better. I love the one card system, the NHI card, correct me if I am wrong, where you can just present it at the GPs and the hospitals, and all your personal information are extracted. In Singapore, the private and public hospitals and GPs do not have an integrated system. We need to fill up registration forms and answer the same basic personal health history all the times, drug allergy, etc. Administration-wise, we need to improve. In Taiwan, there is the planetary alignment; affordable healthcare cost, good medical infrastructure and a wise government. Thank you Taiwan and thanks for this video clip. And may Taiwan show us the the way to a even better healthcare system.
Curious besides the admin paperfilling stuff, if you needed heart or lung collapse surgery, does Singapore docs and surgeons do a good job of fixing the issue for a cheap affordable price for tourists? Or are tourists bankrupt after Singapore medical care? Is the medical competency and medical tech up to par? Even in private hospitals is it crowded and are the surgeons arrive quickly and always available? Can foreigners get private insurance immediately before or upon arrival to Singapore or does it take time for insurance to kick in?
@@BlakeTedKord Hi Yes, I will put in bullet points: 1) Medical tourism is well developed here. Singapore medical professional is one of the best in the world. And probably top 3 in Asia. Many people from our neighbouring countries come here for surgeries for complex conditions.
