    thank you, loved the video! No need for club music or sad pop music, though! I skip those bits unfortunately. I think that's something that suits gen z and americans! The natural ambience is more than enough or even classical music - anything that suits York.

    Pleased that you enjoyed York - it's a fine City, only 35 miles from my home. I used to work there and a great time to visit is early Autumn when the days are still warm(ish), the trees are starting to change colour and the big influx of tourists has subsided. One free thing in York is the National Railway Museum and is huge, quite close to the railway station - maybe 5 or 6 minutes walk.

    I am so pleased that you have done a proper video of York, there is so much there more than London in many ways and so much cheaper too, people who visit go to London and say that they have seen England, but they really haven't begun to scratch the surface, York and the North of England, Scotland and Wales have far more to offer than London at a fraction of the cost and often for free.
    The train that you saw at the end of the video leaves York and travels to Carlisle going through North Yorkshire and the award winning North Yorkshire scenery, it takes a full day but is a must do if you are staying for a few weeks (it has to be booked in advance) but you will get to see parts of the country that you otherwise would miss and some that can only be seen/experienced by rail, so we'll worth finding out more about.

    • @HuesofDelahaye
      @HuesofDelahaye  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you. Yes I know London is not England abs there are so many historic and beautiful places in to UK to see. I definitely want to do that train ride as soon as things get back to normal

    • @misxsosa
      @misxsosa 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey! Just saw your comment and I’m visiting UK next month. York is already on my itinerary but are there places your recommend I visit?

    • @chrisshelley3027
      @chrisshelley3027 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@misxsosa Hi, if you will be travelling by car then perhaps Mother Shiptons Cave, there is a Tom Scott video on here that explains it but doesn't show the touristy side but as its him it's well worth a look, there's other videos that give the tourist side, other things to do while there etc worth looking at, really from York you are well placed for visiting quite a lot of places by car and rail, don't forget the national railway museum in York too, its free and you can climb on some of the old carriages and engines too, some from the Victoriana era etc and all free, a £2 donation isn't needed but the gesture is much appreciated on entry to the museum, it's by the railway station and over a bridge across the lines.
      If you want to visit the coast Whitby is quite close, the Abbey ruins were the inspiration for the book, play, film/s Dracula, but Whitby is beautiful, a seaside town with a harbour and shops yet not overly commercialised, by the way is this Ethan?

    • @misxsosa
      @misxsosa 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@chrisshelley3027 Thank you! How do you recommend I get to Whitby from York?
      And no this isn't Ethan haha

    • @chrisshelley3027
      @chrisshelley3027 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It would have to be by car, there is a bus but its a 3 hour journey and it's from Leeds, you could get a train to Scarborough and a bus from there to Whitby, that shouldn't take too long.

    Thanks for this. I love the walls, but so much more of course.
    Jórvík (most likely) meant 'deep inlet', just like in Gjøvik, Oppland, Norway. Yur-veek, Yuh-veek. Vik (veek) is also of course, the root of Vikings. Men from the inlets, or bays, mainly around Vestfold (west of the Olsofjord), Norway but also other areas and countries of course as well, including Denmark and Sweden.
    The Cawood Sword, found south of York is probably from a workshop in eastern Norway, not very far from Gjøvik, though these are technically, just barely post-Viking Age as they are likely early 1100s CE, which makes sense considering their quality culminating at the end of that age.
    York is virtually the 'Viking Capital City' according to Sir Tony Robinson and I agree. As an English king said in not too distant times, the history of York is the history of England.
    You can see virtual clones of Norwegians and also Danes, in York, but all through Yorkshire, and I see they come from Lincolnshire and Leicestershire as well, where the Great Heathen Army mostly settled. Voices, faces, eyes, hair, skin, skyles/preferences/fashions, movement & gait, they are around if you are aware and observant, much more interesting than even the historical Jórvík Viking Centre.
    My great, great grandfather was born in York (then came to York, Ontario, later Toronto) and the family had a China manufactory on Stonegate (Stein Gata, just like in Norway, or Stone Street). Many of our Canadian branch have always had at least some uncanny Norwegian thread or threads running through out lives and I'm no exception, feeling drawn to both York (more than once) and eastern, southern and also western Norway, more than once. It is in our mix, to varying degrees as 23andme has confirmed. I'm 6'4" unlike most (any?) other relatives of mine on either side of the pond. I felt more normal height and even frame/build in Norway and Denmark.
    The Anglian Tower and also St Olave's church are also worth a look.

      "Jorvik" is a nordicisation of "Eoforwic", the Anglian name of York, which itself was partly derived from the Roman name "Eboracum". "Ebor" -> "Eofor" -> "Jor" -> "Yor".

These two hour tours are completely free with no tips or commercial recommendations. The tours provide a background of York’s history and how the buildings fit into the story. You may even have a few laughs on the way round As well as meeting other visitors.
