    #5 was the culprit for me. Showing and explaining the tools was a huge help. I was able to use one of my wife's smaller knitting needles to remove the pin seat and a thin rod with some electric tape wound around it just off the tip (sort of replicating what you had there) to properly position the replacement pin seat. Thanks!

    I've been working on my 16 year old Briggs & S a good 10 to 12 hours or so, my first time! Did everything perfect! (I thought) Learned all I know threw TH-cam on this project. Rebuilt the carb, paint and all! Was all done. Thing looked bran new! Put gas in the tank, and it leaked like Feak'n Crazy! I was totally gonna trash my 10 hours of work and over 120 bucks I had put into this project and chuck it in the street for the next guy to deal with. I couldn't understand why it was leaking for the life of me! Then Came your Video. Thanks Adam. I didn't seat the toilet bowl needle thing-a-ma-bob! It's now Dry as the Valley I live in! Now to repaint this peeled gas saturated thing... Oh Well, Thanks again.

    I had a leak straight out the carb into the air filter, I found out today that the gas and air vent were hooked to the other guys port. Now that is a easy mistake for an amateur to make, I have no idea how it got swapped around. But plan on changing the gas line anyway, will set it up correctly and see if that stops gas flowing out as soon as I pull the starter cord.

    In the last example (needle seat), the gas on the B&S will be running out of the center hole on the prime bulb. B&S Needle & Seat is #398188.

    Lightweight is good and what did I use it for it’s a lawnmower th-cam.com/users/postUgkxTPN04aT-Qdjr_KS3ql7ng8wnU3wwsCqk also recommend Yes it is lightweight so hence not as robust as our old one. But if you take care it does the job really well.

    don't forget a saturated float ( pinholes )metal float will leave the fuel system wide open to overflow, will flow out the choke. I find this the most common.

    Good video. But there is also a sixth way to leak. Some carbs have a small fuel dump valve on the bottom of the bowl next to the center screw. They have a spring that keeps the gas from pouring out. Sometimes that spring becomes weak or the gasket gets brittle letting the gas flow out and leak. Your carbs did NOT have this but many carbs do!

  • @tonykari5124
    @tonykari5124 10 ปีที่แล้ว

    Awesome video, if after all of that the Carb still leaks, than its the float. Replace the float and make sure the open end of the needle clip is put in right. Open pointy end facing the choke .

    • @AdamPenningtonadamcpennington
      @AdamPenningtonadamcpennington  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The Tecumseh brass floats more often will develop small holes. You can usually check the float by shaking it to hear the fluid inside. The Biggs floats are easier to see through to spot any trapped liquid. It's not much of a float if it's not floating.

    mine was leaking gas all over the place , took gas out of tank ,took apart to get a look at the carb, poured gas in and not leaking , put everything back together and running fine. started it up once every hour for 5 hours and no leaks. question , why did it only leak that one time and what would be the most common thing for this to happen, would like your opinion adam. by the way, great video MAN!!!

    • @joepruneda2263

      GmGarlo the pin that holds the float might get gumed out and not let the float open and close properly

      maybe the float valve, but the same symptoms happen if you have the gas and air vent tubes attached to each other's places. You may have hooked them up correctly the second time without realizing it.

    I just found my Sears YT3000 riding mower on my driveway covered with gas(the deck, etc.) It doesn't appear to be leaking around the fuel filter or from the fuel line. The concrete pavement under and around the mower was flooded with gas, as well(not just a little drip!) I had put gas in it a few days ago, but did not crank it. I'm assuming that since nearly ALL of the fuel has leaked out of the plastic tank, it must be a crack or leak in the tank somewhere(or maybe a bolt underneath the tank that connects it somehow?)
    Are these plastic gas tanks expensive/difficult to replace? Can they be repaired? Any other ideas? I live in a VERY hot, humid southern state...and the mower sits out in the sun.
    Thanks so much for your videos. They are very helpful for a single woman with minimal skills to follow!

    • @AdamPenningtonadamcpennington
      @AdamPenningtonadamcpennington  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Do some investigation. If the gas tank is empty the next day, that's got to be the culprit. Pull the tank out, fill it with water and (temporary) plug the fuel line. Once you find the cracked area, clean it up and use J-B Water Weld. It's pulled me out of a few pinches. LMK if that helps!

    Bought a new carb for my HFT Preditor 79cc engine. The second I poured gasoline in the tank, it was gushing out of a tiny hole in the side of the carb. My guess is this is a bowl vent on this new carb. The original carb seems to have a BB-like metal ball inserted in the exact same place, but the replacement carb doesn't have this BB in the hole. And oddly, it looks like it was never supposed to have a BB in it. No idea why this tiny hole exists except to leak gasoline. The hole was designed into the casting, it doesn't seem to be a defect. Maybe the carb needs to be primed by unscrewing the bowl's side screw to allow gas to run into the bowl instead of out the hole??? Anyone? It made a mess, so I'm hesitant to try again until I find some answers. Tx

    What is the proper name for tool used to remove seat?
    I need to get that before I move forward so will await info. I brought a Craftsman mower today. 6.75 Briggs gold Ed. Guy said leaks gas $20 and can have. Mower is in clean nice shape. I can confirm leaks. Put gas in tank and gushes out air breather soaking filter. I assume untill I open carb I need to look into neddle and seat issue?

    gas is leaking from the air hole on the prime button. It is just sitting there leaking without me touching it. I have lost a whole tank of gas in less than a day. What causes this?
    I thought there was a tear or crack in the button so I replaced it yesterday. No difference....still leaking.

    • @AdamPenningtonadamcpennington
      @AdamPenningtonadamcpennington  10 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Sounds like you have a Briggs and Stratton Quantum engine. What's happening is the gas is flowing from the tank through the carb and out of the primer unrestricted. Clean the carb and replace the needle and seat properly and that will fix the issue.

    is there any reason after putting the carburetor back on that gas would leak out of the green gasket that is between the carburetor and the plastic piece that connects to the engine. when priming there is no resistance. all I hear is air unit gas comes out. The green gasket has been replace but still its leaking. the carburetor has a channel or canal that I believe the gas is coming out of. I believe its for venting.. Let me know what you think. thank you.

    • @AdamPenningtonadamcpennington
      @AdamPenningtonadamcpennington  9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Matthew Millard In order for a carb to prime properly it must be air/liquid tight. Replace the rubber seat that the needle sits in. If replaced properly this will stop the fuel from continuing to flow. Also change the rubber bowl seal (especially on a Tecumseh engine).

    My carb on my Honda hrr216 was leaking gas so I replaced it with a new one with . I put the new one on and it still is running gas down carburator. Can't find the leak still. Any thoughts? Thanks bud

    • @AdamPenningtonadamcpennington
      @AdamPenningtonadamcpennington  9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Jesse Galvan Although the possibility exists that the new carb may be bad or the bolt on the bottom of the bowl may be lose, odds are it's more likely to be the fuel line or the tank itself. If I'm having an especially difficult time I'll just connect the fuel line without mounting the carb- that way you can see exactly what's going on as its filling up with gas.

    • @AdamPenningtonadamcpennington
      @AdamPenningtonadamcpennington  9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Ony Quiñones Thanks for sharing your problem. Fuel coming through the air filter would be caused by it not being stopped at a good level in the bowl. Either the rubber of the 'needle and seat' is damaged or placed incorrectly OR the float is punctured and now full of fuel. Let me know how that works out.

      If the air filter is full of gasoline, it is because of the needle/seat gasket or a stuck float. Lawnmowers use gravity feed to the carb, no fuel pump. Take the carb apart and clean it up real good with carb cleaner spray. Most likely, you have some varnish that is either impeding the needle or the float from reaching its stop position, which floods the carb and spills into the air cleaner.

    • @Maintenance63

      The tube that the needle and seat fit into may be so pitted and corroded that you'll have to replace the carb.

    why does my mower leak gas when its off but when its on its fine

    • @AdamPenningtonadamcpennington
      @AdamPenningtonadamcpennington  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      When running, the engine will vibrate somewhat. There could be a hole for fuel to escape from only during that movement. Try to narrow down the possible spots- carburetor, gas tank, intake etc.- while the engine is running, using caution. Then come in for closer inspection after the engine cools. Leaks can be tricky and you may need to pull it apart a bit to find the culprit.

    • @donbunn6102

      Adam, I have the same issue as bestweeklyvines, NO leak when running but leaks when it's off. Sounds like your answer addressed the opposite, i.e., leaking when on, not leaking when off or maybe I misunderstood your answer. Thanks for the video, going out now to trouble shoot according to your guide.
