What if THEY played drums on Toto's AFRICA instead of Jeff Porcaro?

  • • Brecker Brothers Some ... Try this one after listening to Lars.
Not in the pocket I know! Some intentional, some I just did not even practice. But....Here we get a glimpse of what Africa may have sounded like if Baby Dodds or John Bonham or Tony Williams or Vinnie, or Lars or Buddy Rich and others had played on this great track.
Be happy people, it's all in good fun! I get NO compensation for this due to using the TOTO track. That's fine. Never thought this would go so crazy, but almost 100k now. Wish I would have taken more time.
O.K. now for the tough part. Explaining humor, kind of kills the joke. But here goes. Some folks are taking life WAY too seriously. This was done SO quickly and off the cuff. I got the idea and just kept going. I could barely hear the track - no excuse I know. Was not in the pocket for sure. That was not the point anyway. I would literally come up with an idea of another one as I played. So, I did another one until I felt it was enough. Just kept hitting pause and then did a new one. Mostly this has gotten a lot of great comments. A few haters. A few that COVID has ruined their ability to laugh at something only intended for fun. Really, I am just wanting to bring some distraction to the difficulties we are all facing. Honestly, not one of these drummers is a bad drummer. All are to be highly regarded including Lars. I did not even pick the thumbnail! YT did that automatically. I went with it. This was wham bam and done.
Redo or not? That is the question. I can't redo spontaneity. It may work. It may not. Glad it made MOST people laugh. I may redo it. Vote below in the comments.
Drums: 1966 Ludwig with a LM402 snare drum - 1970s aluminum. 10" tom add on. Keller shell. 14" floor tom is a Gretsch. PST7 lights all the way around.

This was wonderful and I was laughing (in the best possible way) all the way through. You really show how well you've listened to and practiced the styles of a very wide variety of drummers and styles. You are a really fine player. And to every so-serious commenter with their "Bonham, Purdie shuffle, blah, blah, blah" and "your timing was occasionally off," or dissing it because (heaven forbid) no Peart: this is so clearly a just-for-fun, wink-wink nudge-nudge effort by a very good drummer to put a smile on our faces. Mission accomplished! And how many of you haters are 1) drummers who know how hard this sh*t is? and 2) familiar with so wide a range of music and styles that you can pull Baby Dodds and Lars Ulrich off your sticks?
My vote is for more! My personal suggestions for other idiosyncratic players: Moon (who some mentioned below), Charlie Watts, Ginger Baker, Carly Barrett, Jo Jo Meyer, Stella Mozgawa (Warpaint), Phil Rudd and Milford Graves....and maybe Meg White.

Bullshit. Firstly, the entire video has the drums ahead of the music. Secondly, he's playing 32nd notes instead of 16th note triplets during the supposed "One" section. No accents on the two, no signature Lars fills. Simply nothing that sounds like Lars at all.

@TheAbsorbant the part where the drums start doing “the beat” those are sixlets aka sixteenth note triplets, and if you want to get real technical there’s 7 hits when he ends the sixlet run each time. if you’re thinking of 32nd notes then you’re probably thinking about Wipeout by The Surfaris lmao. and Lars does suck and there’s videos where James shits on Lars for actually playing bad half the time. so please learn to take friendly criticism. no one is actually mad except you, the person who made the video just made it to entertain his audience which he did. Lars isn’t the best drummer in the world and there are times where he has actually messed up the “One” sixlet feel. anyways i said my piece, just know 32nd notes are 8 hits in 1 beat and Sixteenth not triplets, sixlets, are six hits in 1 beat. and finally, remember it’s 7 hits, triplet triplet da. or diggadadiggadada, or if you don’t understand drum lingo then my bad. also it’s just a video, chill. i hope you have a good day and that you have learned something.
