The way this show uses COLOR to foreshadow the deaths that is unique in every single character's storyline is BRILLIANT!

I personally thought the way strong colours were used during many of the deaths was a nod (homage?) to 70s Italian horror movies like the original version of Suspira (I believe the specific term was "gialo"?).

Bly Manor was actually a similar collage of works with Henry James' Turning of the Screw being the basis of the central storyline, but each episode pulling inspiration from James' other ghost stories. It makes me a little sad that Bly Manor isn't as beloved as Flanagan's other projects, because I find it to be so re-watchable and multi-layered. I think he's uniquely brilliant and doing these "homages" to great writers without making it feel like he's just doing a cash-grab modernized adaptation. You can really feel his love for the original authors. Hill House was full of tiny winks and nods to Shirley Jackson, too. And then we got to see Mike's full range as an original storyteller himself in Midnight Mass. I love them all equally and I gotta believe that Poe is in good hands here. Fingers crossed that this one will be as great. I always get excited to see what Mike Flanagan's working on.

This was a beautiful tapestry of things and I actually enjoyed the monologues since they’re delivered at a time that helps one understand the meaning of them. The horror almost wakes one up from a dream, the scare almost a tool to get you to pay attention to the message about to be delivered.

I love that he doesn’t do one piece of work but rather pulls from multiple sources, for this one he’s tapping all of Poe’s work for inspiration (odes) and it makes it so much more dynamic bc it gives him the control to veil identities or plot points via misdirection. It writes like a detective, and we the audience so desperately want to super sleuth and I think that’s what brings folks back for more. That, and the fact that these are actually very well crafted, acted, executed shows: that helps too 🤣

I really wish this was The Fall of the House of Sackler but reality doesn't deliver us that satisfaction. I am with you in that I like Midnight Mass the most of Flanagan's series, I rank Hill House a very close second and Usher a close third. I will watch all three multiple times. Absolutely brilliant yet again.

I love all Mike Flanagan has made so far. The love, care, and craft that he and his team (actors included) put on every single show they make is something very rare to find today in contemporary horror. From his Netflix shows to his movies (highlight to an unexpected beautiful sequel of The Shinning: Doctor Sleep), he always brings exciting horror adaptations and beautifully written stories and characters. For me, personally, his best work is Midnight Mass (a masterpiece), followed by The Hunting of Hill House, and The Fall of the House of Usher very closely. I agree with you Zach: this is Carla Gugino's best performance to date. She is perfect in the role and her performance is mesmerizing. Bruce Greenwood is also amazing and I think this is his most intense and heartfelt performance yet. Mike Flanagan is a brilliant director of actors, and he always brings out the best that each one of them has to offer.

I read a lot of Poe in high school and college. While that was 20 years ago, knowing all the stories did lead me to guess a few of the big “surprise” throughout the series. But this my favorite of his works so far, although just a bit more than Hill House

What really surprised me about this show is how excellent the sound quality is, I have a moderate budget, Dolby Atmos home theatre set up in my living room. I’ve watched lots of 4K movies and shows and don’t usually comment on sound but show has incredible sound stage and mixing.

Flanagan actually commented on this when some people on social media (mainly the space formerly known as Twitter) feeling it was unnecessarily cruel to the cat. Flanagan stated that this is why there's a scene showing Pluto in his Gucci collar, to show that Leo didn't attack Pluto in actuality, but hallucinated it.

Fall of the House of Usher is a brilliant hommage to Poe. I'm starting, tho, to tire of the cast. I'm spending too much thought on the actor, and the previous roles they played, and comparing. They may be excellent at their craft, but I'm only seeing actors now.

  • @brendonlake1522

I liked the idea way more than the execution which was a big disappointment because I've liked a lot of Mike Flanagan's work.
The visual style is great but series is severely let down by the writing! It's rather predictable when each member of the family gets killed and the story is overloaded with social commentary to the detriment of just being a good horror film.
I did appreciate the poe references scattered throughout, poetry as well as from his stories.
