Yeah kind of funny to go to 1 HP then heal all the way up again. You need a way to prevent Instant Death too (Warding paired with Subversion or Safety Bit accessory) plus Reprieve if it one shots you via damage.
First several times on Normal and Hard I got folded like paper by Rufus, lots of trial and error before I got him down. Disorder and Triple Slash are some of the best moves to hit him and gap close when he’s doing anything that leaves him open. Braver when he stops Guns Akimbo is safe for that Instant Stagger on his immediate Reload too. He’s definitely up there with mechanical, knowledge, and execution barriers compared to the rest of the boss battles. Good luck, you got this.
For some reason he can’t interrupt 3 loops of dodge attack combo into 2 normal attacks and repeat. He’ll finally do a hardcounter after 3 or so loops which has 2 results. If you can immediately control Cloud, he’s gonna do a normal shot. You can block then hit him when he attempts another reload. If you are not able to control Cloud right away he’ll either shoot railguns or do Spiral unblockables which you can dodge then immediately use an ATB move since he has to reload yet again.
He will counter you after a few hits while pressured except for the combo I was doing with 2 normal attacks dodge into the full blade beam combo and repeat. Braver staggering his Guns Akimbo recovery is definitely the harder way to get him, Triple Slash is super reliable to pressure him during most of his attacks. Hang in there you’ve got this.
During the cutscenes you can hold square to open the Equipment Menu and swap stuff around. If you lose on Rufus, choose the 1st option to restart only the Rufus fight. You can still hold square on the cutscene here to access menu.
Rufus right after the Turks is brutal and Rufus himself is a huge pain forcing you into his pace or get blasted. Keep at it, you’ll beat him. You actually do, maxed Warding linked to Subversion materias or Safety Bit accessory is what stop you from instantly dying. Then Reprieve is what prevents the damage from also oneshotting yourself.
You can’t use it twice in one fight, Reprieve ability only activates once per battle. To make your Self Destruct hit as hard as possible you want Sonic Boom buff or Faith buff, Prime Mode Berserk buff, Darkside buff, and Magic UP materia.
@@markng1938 You’ll need a maxed out Warding paired with Subversion materias equipped. Self Destruct not only does massive self damage it also insta kills you which Warding + Subversion prevents so that Reprieve can activate. Alternatively a Safety Bit accessory can be used too instead of that materia link but accessory items are quite competitive as is. You can only do this once per battle as the self damage is massive enough to one shot you even without Insta Kill effect.
Ok the safety bit did the trick but because my warding wasn’t maxed out I still lost 50% HP. Finally managed to defeat him after many days of trying. Thank you so much for the tips!
Rufus doesn’t counter Dodge into full Blade Beam combo + 2 normal hits and repeat for at least 3-4 reps. Not sure why but it might be because the Blade Beam detonates when he does a regular counter negating it. He’ll eventually hardcounter out of it after those 3-4 combos.

I probably died on this fight 30 times on normal and only ever staggered him with braver once. It’s such a small window
Yeah the window is extremely small, you basically have to guess or know which move forces a reload on him
Cast Haste and Regen as soon as you can. Hit him with ranged or close up attacks as his attacks are cooling down to pressure him.

It's the Plasma Discharge ability from Enemy Skill materia, it explodes every time you fill an ATB bar :)

Self destruct doesn't do enough damage to kill them and when I tried to do it again it killed me for real...
