- Playland (also known as Playland at the Beach and Whitney's Playland beginning in 1928) was a 10-acre seaside amusement park located next to Ocean Beach, in the Richmond District at the western edge of San Francisco, California along Great Highway where Cabrillo and Balboa streets are now. It began as a collection of amusement rides and concessions in the late 19th century and was known as Chutes At The Beach as early as 1913. It closed Labor Day weekend in 1972. It's nice to see this, my grandmother's stories of growing up in San Francisco now have deeper meaning for me. Thank you.
They should have never taken this place down. Nowadays (2024) our society needs more fun and laughter. My favorite memory of going here was Sal, the laughing lady. This is a fun video. Thanks

I grew up going to the Playland. In the 50's.My folks would go there almost every couple of months. As I watch the pictures, I realized I could feel myself smiling as all those memories came flashing back. I'm almost 76 and I'm so glad I was lucky enough to experience my childhood there at Playland . Thanks Mom and Dad ! 👍💙💙

Grew up in the sunset dist in the early 50's and remember always going out to Playland. The historic Looff carousel, fun house, and all the other rides, and the wonderful food places. The hot house, its it, chicken range and others. Moved out of SF in 2001, but went back in 2015 with my kids. What a different place ocean beach is now. Wish Playland could have survived the times
@ Barton, I grew up in the 1950's also in the city, at 48th and Taraval. What memories, and all our landmarks are disappearing. Sad.
Jack roper hi Jack, yeah I grew up on Lincoln Way & Funston directly across from GG Park. Went to St. Anne’s of the sunset school & later Lowell High. The city was a wonderful place growing up in the 50’s. When I went back for a visit in 2015, it was sad to see so much of my memories of the city gone.
@@bartonpercival2147 I was a St Anne’s kid also...Class of 1964 then Riordan. Funston & Lincoln became the parking lot for Park & Shop, with some Apartments too. I was on Kirkham near 10th Ave.
@@robertsmith1860 Yup, sounds like we both grew up in the inner Sunset Dist. I grew up on the 1100 block of Lincoln Way & Funston Street. Went to ST Anne’s then to A.P. Gianinni, then on to Lowell High

Great memories. Living in the East Bay, my parents took us a couple times a month for years. As a teenager, my friends and I would go almost every weekend. I miss this amusement park. It was the BEST!
When we were 14 we rode our bicycles from Sausalito to Playland, spent several hours then biked back. How many kids that age would do that today? We also started going to Giants games back then on a series of different buses. We'd also take the ferry to SF and watch movies in a seedy part of town. No one bothered us. It was a kid's world
I'm absolutely freaking out over this video. In 1961, when I was 4 years old, my dad took a job in San Francisco and we moved there from New Orleans. (I'm still a rabid Giants fan 62 years later!!) I always had somewhat vague memories of Half Moon Bay and a place there called Playland that had a giant indoor slide (as I recall you sat on a potato sack), moving sidewalks, bumper cars, and most importantly, a diving bell. Hearing about the tragic shootings today in Half Moon Bay rekindled those memories and led me to this video. I had actually begun to doubt my own recollections of Playland, but there it is, EXACTLY as I remembered it some 60 years ago. I'm just sorry it took a tragedy like the one today to lead me here, to this video, but still, I'm grateful to stumble on it. (I got goosebumps when I saw the diving bell!! What memories.)
that was such a fun place. We always headed to Playland to ride the bumper cars , ride the big dipper, the fun house with all the holes blowing up our dresses, skateland, ice skating, the Hot house for Mexican food, The its ice cream bars and Sally the laughing lady . There are so many memories. Its too bad that all the fun things are gone.

This brought back so many memories of my childhood. We used to just stand and watch the laughing lady before going in the rides. I still have a ring from the merry go round😊

Being a kid my favorite was the Fun house, the few times family visited playland. The greenish tank that supposingly went down to view the ocean I only rode once. It was too scary looking for me.
I remember going there when I was a little kid. The Fun House really freaked me out. The "lady" laughing so creepy.

Those were the days when everyone went out and had a good time unfortunely this. is no longer the case love the old fashion amusement parks which are mostly all gone yes those were the days😰
Attended the last wknd. w/my grandmother, I was thrilled to be interviewed by a local newscaster.
They should condemn those ugly Condos as blighted property. Bulldoze them all, rebuild Playland just how it was, in all of its seedy glory.
The land is so expensive now that the only thing that could get built there is high rises.

I appreciate the effort that went into making this, but it really could use better editing. Cuts are often too fast for the viewer to take in the scene.
